Yeah, I thought the Manhattan Clothing commercial with Manny Ramirez on a boat was the death of culture as I knew it...and then I saw the Baby Safe Haven spot.

This is like something bullworth came up with.

goddamn there's another hip-hop low point for ya.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 24 July 2005 04:52 (eighteen years ago) link

Pras's new single, which samples "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," fits nicely with the concept as well. Local station plays it a lot and I can't figure why the fuck that is.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 24 July 2005 04:53 (eighteen years ago) link

and no one thought to mention Ca$h Money or No Limit records? I mean "'bout it, 'bout it", "bling, bling"....some of the most cringe worthy stuff on commercial radio in the past ten years. Each label had it's exceptions, but mostly the songs they put out were vomitrocious.

kevin says relax (daddy warbuxx), Sunday, 24 July 2005 05:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Actually, most of the songs they put out were fucking great.

Miccio, I don't know if I agree about Bullworth being a low point...! Expound.

deej.., Sunday, 24 July 2005 05:34 (eighteen years ago) link

I love Bulworth, though then ending was kinda trite... "Be a spirit, not a ghost!" D'uh...

Reading all those 2001 posts is kinda amazing... The lowest point of rap was Digital Underground?? Tupac and Biggie??! Gangsta rap (not just some specific gangsta rapper, but the whole genre)???!! Jay-Z (okay, I'm not a big fan of his, but still...)??! Motherfuckin' "Crossroads", one of the best rap singles ever???!! Is this what ILM was like in 2001? The only thing I agree with those guys is that Missy is not really a good rapper.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 24 July 2005 07:08 (eighteen years ago) link

For me, the low point of hip hop for the recent years must've been Black Eyed Peas, Dilated Peoples, Jurassic 5, and maybe even The Roots, though they at least have some good singles under their belt (they should stick to do doing something else than rap, 'cause that's not exactly their forté). I might've otherwise agreed with Miccio about El-P, but his production on the Cannibal Ox album really kicks ass, and luckily he has the good sense to rap on only one of the songs on that record.

GLORY DAYS MY ASS

funny, I was thinking exactly the opposite (Matos/Miccio complete disagreement shocker yes I know)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Sunday, 24 July 2005 11:00 (eighteen years ago) link

what a thread, what a thread...
Lord knows Micc will take issue, but I always found the Puffy "Missing You" track, especially at the awards with Sting, to be a special low point.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 24 July 2005 12:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Miccio, I don't know if I agree about Bullworth being a low point...! Expound.

I can't be bothered but this is a half-decent summary of why the film is fubar.

x-post: haha actually I can see the argument for the original single and would be tempted to make it myself, but the MTV performance let us see Sting (of all people!) be reduced to Puffy's stationary, hook singing bitch and that was too-too classic.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 24 July 2005 12:37 (eighteen years ago) link

I mean to have the power of sampling (reducing some revered cultural artifact into mere riff, or in Puffy's case, mere jingle) displayed in living color - the great STING now just a tiny part of a cavalcade of dancers, singers and pyrotechnics - that was a major accomplishment. Plus it was Sting.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 24 July 2005 12:42 (eighteen years ago) link

I beg to diff; I think Sting was more one of the great rings in the circus for that performance. Also he sounded really bad and just kept staring at the booth. Meanwhile, Puff stayed steady skanking like he knew something. Such a douche, that fellow.

Incidentally, the Boyz in tha Hood are wack.

I will, however, admit to liking the Young Jeezy "So Icy" shirts with the snowmen.

But has anyone noticed that Jeezy himself wears a GOLD snowman shirt?

Effectively, made of YELLOW SNOW?

This, certainly, must be some sort of low point.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 24 July 2005 13:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Has anyone heard "My Humps" by The Black Eyed Peas? It deserves at least a mention in an thread with this title.

no.

bad boy killer jay z die too looking out for mobb deep nigga when i find you, Sunday, 24 July 2005 23:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Anyway, the correct answer is "Pushing Weight" by Ice Cube.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 24 July 2005 23:28 (eighteen years ago) link

naw D "!" can be an interjection, it's not necessarily terminal: "Blimey! me beads" for example in My Fair Lady, obv. a key point of reference for this thread

Regardless, does anyone else really think "Whistle While you Twerk" is a bad song? I want to believe bbkjzdtlofmdnwify is the only one who really dislikes it.
