Soulja Slim

I thank the Lord I got my mind right
My lifestyle was drastic
Trying to avoid the casket
Don't want my son to be a bastard
But ya'll don't know
I seen that a couple of times
The Lord talked to me
Told me put the foolishness behind
It's not worth dying
Trying to represent where you come from
Or making beef, 'cause you feel like you're that big G
I went the same way but today I'm on a higher level
I'm on a paper chase and running behind it like a rebel
I want it all
So me and my mama can ball
The only one that pushed me up in my downfall
And my pop been in penitentiaries
Ten wasted years
My mama wasted tears
But she brought me up by herself, without no help
Used to catch whippings with a leather belt
But that ain't stop nothing
I was a soulja, always into stuff
Elementary school, I'm cutting
Getting caught, writing for the B roll
Mama, come sign me out
I don't like these phony people down here
Come bomb me out central lockup
I should have put the glock up
And the two quarters I rocked up

From the cover of Murder Dog to getting drug out the Escalade in front of your mama's crib. Perfect.

Soulja Slim does a verse on a Rebirth Brass Band record (on You Don't Wanna Go to War) = he is classic.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 1 December 2003 14:17 (twenty years ago) link

Soulja Slim's funeral/second line went down in New Orleans this morning. Sad...Rebirth and a ton of people turned out for the second line though.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 6 December 2003 21:20 (twenty years ago) link

What is a second line? The only time I've heard the term is in a B.G. song and the way he said it I thought it was just the name of an Uptown neighborhood or something.

d k (d k), Monday, 8 December 2003 06:57 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, that's exactly a second line. They're usually sponsored by a community organization, and they hire brass bands to go through town for four or so hours. The actual 'second line' is everybody who's walking and dancing behind the band. People are selling beer and food off of shopping carts along the way...it's pretty much the best thing in the world.

soulja slim on college hill was cool and funny and sad.

shalondrea: yeah soulja slim was cool-- but i couldn't understand shit he said. i was like, my name's shalondrea and he's all like 'magnolia dah-dah-dah-dah-dah-dah.'

they had a fade-to-black IN LOVING MEMORY OF JAMES TAPP AKA SOULJA SLIM thing at the end of the show.

he was just posthumously charged with murder, too.

I just wanna say that I really miss Slim a lot. I talked to him the day he died. I asked him how he was doing and he said, "Just tryin' to do this music thang". We were laughing and jokin'. He sounded happy and at peace. He was saying how we were gonna see each other after Bayou Classic. He said, "I'ma call you" Hours later I found out he was dead. It was really sad. You never know what's gonna happen. He was always so sweet and down to earth. He didn't have a big head or anything. It's a shame that all that talent was taken. I pray for peace for his family. I know that he's at peace now.

"Ezee", Murda, Friday, 26 March 2004 01:23 (twenty years ago) link

On Monday there was a very comical story on the front page of the Times-Picayune titled something like "Rapper kept it real until his death." It was pretty much "rappers be shootin' each other!" This is the extent to which the New Orleans media covers this city's most vital and exciting music--while Jon Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, the blandest MOR whiteboy funk this side of G Love get reams of coverage. Ugh.

SLIM up there now so them niggas can keep frowning. They did no damage but to themselves. Well in the south we call them niggas some COWARD ASS HATERS. It was a terrible lost, but Slim is away from all this hate, jealousy, and destruction. I play his CD's everyday and know his songs word for word. Through me and my sister Slim's legacy will forever live on. Although I've never met you in person I feel like I know you. Now B.g. and Juvenile are here to keep your spirit alive, cause they some real ass niggas to. Love always, Miss Amanda!!

No kidding. You can go in any used cd store in New Orleans and find half that shit for 5 bucks though. Look at their prices for the CMR UNLV records--50 bucks each. I got all those at Wherehouse dirt cheap.

Also when they list UNLV's "Mac Melph Calio" as "Chopped & Screwed" version they are actually referring to the "fuckup at the pressing plant" version.

to slim's fans and fans of new orleans rap in general, it's pretty much without saying that slim surpasses tupac in basically every way. To respond to some posts above, chopper aka young city isn't the real chopper. Chopper raps with magic and roy jones jr on hard body ent. But fans of new orleans rap know that... and trust me slim wouldn't want his fans to be confused about something like that.

let's face it, we're never going to know who the hell killed slim and it will ALWAYS be a mystery. He's been more famous in death than he was in life, and he was about to explode nationally, but his death didn't completely slow down his popularity growth. Still, the liklihood of any developments coming forth regarding his death are small, because the evidence, purps, etc....let's just say they've washed away with the time.

But that's how slim wanted it, I think; "Who killed pac? Who killed biggie? mysteries that made history in the industry"

it's more glorious and compelling when there's a mysterious componant to it. The truth behind tupac or biggie's murders are probably less exciting and sinister than fans have fantasized and it's probably the same with slim. We know what kind of life he lived, so none of us are surprised, and he himself predicted his death to quite an astonishing degree of accuracy.

RIP Slim, Free Mac, free C-Murder (several cases ongoing), free Mystikal, free Turk

I don't know what you find puzzling, but if you knew exactly who killed them and why, it would not be as big of a deal, no one would talk about it as much, and their deaths would become less iconic. In short, they wouldn't really be importal, just another dead rapper. Tupac and soulja slim both talked about their impending deaths several times in albums, and I think each chose the way they were going to die conciously aware of
how they wanted to be remembered. While Soulja Slim's death didn't get as much national attention, I think it's even more the case with him than with Tupac.

Anyway I cannot tell much for three question marks, but I hoped this cleared up what I was saying.

RIP Soulja Slim

It strikes me as odd to want to keep yet another unsolved murder of a rapper unsolved in the interest of keeping the "fantasies" of the fans alive. And besides that, have you even read any of the other posts on this thread? The fans you claim to speak for practically have a bounty on the killer's head. But keep fantasizing about gangstas in your moms basement dude.

I DIDNT USE TO KNOW ABOUT HIM,AT FIRST. IT'S TRUE WHAT THEY THAT "REAL RECOGNIZE REAL". BECAUSE IF WAS'NT I WOULD'VE NEVER RECOGNIZED SOILJA SLIM. AS FOR HIS MURDER, WHEN YOUR WELL KNOWN AND RESPECTED BY MANY, AS HE WAS, THINGS LIKE THAT COULD HAPPEN. LET FINISH BY SAYING R.I.P. TO SOILJA SLIM, AND IF HE WAS STILL HERE HE WOULD'VE LEGENDARY LIKE PAC AND BIGGIE

TEX DELVA, Monday, 29 May 2006 20:46 (seventeen years ago) link

two weeks pass...
What strikes me as odd is that I am quoting slim verbatim and these supposed fans don't even recognize the lyrics. This isn't some obscure unreleased verse. ANY real fan of slim wouldn't dispute my argument based on his lyrics.

You are operating completely based on speculation, and by the way, that includes speculating that I personally don't want the murder solved. Did I say I didn't want his murder solved? Of course not. You think I don't know that there are countless fans who would surely make an ill conceived dash to "handle" slim's murder? That's not the point.

Just read my original post and you'll see that all I was saying was that it is evident from slim's own verses that a) he was almost constantly preoccupied with his own death, b) was compared this to the death of other iconic rappers, and c) deliberately painted this future event in a mysterious light before it even occured.

Now I'm not one of these people who takes EVERY little "clue" from a dead rapper's song and thinks the information is there...I'm not trying to say Krazy killed him just because he hinted something about that in his song. All I'm saying is that it's fairly reasonable that Slim would tend to stick to genuine thoughts in his songs, as this is what he became legendary for, and one of his subjects was his own death. If other fans aren't talking about this, I question whether they ever really listened to Slim's songs or just his hooks...

I wish anyone who disagrees with me the best of luck in hunting down Slim's killer, but honestly, you are wasting your time. It probably won't be that easy to solve because the simple fact is that Slim really did lead a life that with a deep involvement in drugs and violence, as did a whole lot of other people in New Orleans circa 2003. The potential motivations were limitless, including something completely pointless like a robery. Lots of people knew he had a house in gentilly and there wasn't any special security.

I hope I can put a rest to this topic so we can get back to honoring slim's music and legacy. I never said I wanted to keep the murder a mystery, I simply wanted to point out that his lyrics seemed to allude
to what we're talking about now. Between the two of us I'm the one using more realistic thought and less fantasy. Oh and my mom doesn't have a basement. I live in New Orleans; obviously you don't.
