The new album, incidentally, is incredible. It covers a lot of ground musically and I highly recommend checking it out as soon as possible.

That one track on Silent Enigma has some of the best screaming ever (Suicide Veil?).

And of course, if you like them, you'll need to check out Katatonia, My Dying Bride, The Gathering or mid-career Paradise Lost.

I find them to be a real albums band and any later-period-Roger-Waters Floyd fan who hasn't heard them should def. check them out.

Serenades has the more trad. metal vox, but from The Silent Enigma on it gets much more atmospheric and orchestrated with the clean vocals. Eternity is a good place to start and Judgement with its track "One Last Goodbye" about the mother of the two brothers passing away is simply beautiful.

sometimes i get a little spooked by how much i love Judgement. I've probably listened to that album a hundred times or more and every time it ends i just want to play it again. it's the heroin in my record collection. or the crack. or the meth. basically, i would never want to live without it.

I listened to that album a coupla times through yesterday, it was really sweet. Will stick it on again now.

Their attempt at becoming Nickelback (Alternative 4) is the only album of them I actively dislike, but everything afterwards is just a bit meh. A bit of radio rock, bit of Pink Floyd-esque atmospherics, emotional lyrics, overwrought singing, same formula over and over again...I can't really find a fault with it but can't really imagine anyone getting overexcited about it - but strangely I keep running into ppl who do think those albums are life-changing events.

Well, it's not quite blowing my mind yet, but there's an intriguing kernel of semi-lucid agony which these guys evince. It's gotten under my skin, I'll say that. Not many individual songs have stunned me yet ("Closer" aside). The albums seem to work quite well as ensemble pieces.

I am yet to give "Eternity" or the early stuff a good go though, so maybe that'll be the ticket. "Judgement" and "A Natural Disaster" and "A Good Day To Exit" are the ones I've listened to all the way through; they're all very listenable, they suck you into their world quite convincingly.

Saw them live at the Camden Underworld supported by At the Gates back in 96 or something. Great gig. ATG were better though.

I am not sad! But the nights are drawing in. They have a nobility which suits this time of year.

New album is out and is good, maybe even very good in their own quiet way.
The Pink Floyd/ Cure vibes are still there, but there's a new fresh, summery feeling that I quite like.

So I've only heard their newest, which I checked out after seeing it pop up in a bunch of places. I really don't get too much of The Cure vibes, more Floyd though. A lot of it I find kinda boring though, how does this (Weather Systems) stack up against the older stuff discussed in this thread?

just heard the first three tracks, if you like this sound work your way backwards through the catalog. they used to be my one of my favorite bands, but I got tired of all this emotional excess. it is just. too. much.

it is sad what happened to the melodic death / doom / goth metal bands from the early 90s, most of them (all?) ended up doing this sort of tearful and overproduced hard rock. compare all that crying to these two songs:

thanks! yeah its weird running into what those bands sound like now. for example, i'd never heard a Paradise Lost record before until this year's. read a lot about them, but i missed out on them. anyway, i hear the new one and i'm like, "people think this is awesome?! like this is barely better than Nickelback".

man, they're still going? i was way into PL circa 'draconian times', and the record before and after that.

late-night silent enigma listening session in headphones here - really good. interesting to me to hear the legacy of first valor/rozz era Xian death & Celtic Frost's take on that synthesized in this band - I think those strains have a heavy legacy in this sort of mournful doom

fuck, maybe there's better shit to dig at 230 am with some whiskey but I'm hard pressed to say what it is. the depth of the journey on this album is the whole deal, those repeating picked notes in the "nocturnal emission" fade...the ongoing hum...what an album

I saw them at the Old Trout in Windsor. Must have been, christ, 1993? They were fantastic. Had no idea they still existed or that they'd changed styles. Listening to Violence right now. Nice chops.

Oh man, I was just thinking a few days ago that we should be hearing news of a new album soon.

that is fuckin sad as hell, these guys have been at it so long.

We want to let you know that unfortunately life has been very tough on one of our band members, Dan, in the last two years, and He has attempted suicide.
He has has been under a chronic and profound depression for years.
He survived the suicide attempt and is getting better. It’s a miracle he survived the last two years at all. He never left the house for a year, and contrary to theories, he was never institutionalised in any way and has never in his life had contact from the police, or the psychiatric services.
Dan is a reasonably decent human being who seems to have become lost. Hasn’t been himself at all for years.
He did go voluntarily to hospital once for a few days, to avoid the ability to commit suicide, but apparently the NHS facility was even more depressing. The NHS need help and we are pledging 10% of our GoFundMe to the mind charity.
We are now working to bring something good to the world and Dan wants to improve as a human being and be a better man, and never do anything so stupid again. His doctor is also trying his best to prevent suicide happening again.
He is under professional mental health care and is very dedicated to 12 step of addiction recovery, of which he is very active. Dan has been diagnosed with profound depression, daily chronic horrific anxiety, complex post traumatic stress disorder for 25 - 30 years, and he has ADHD. He has not been himself at all for 4 years now, at least.
Many of you share this type of struggle. Maybe music is part of healing.
Hard lessons have been well learned. This was the hardest. Lessons were learned. Maybe that’s why we have hard times.
We wish Dan a good recovery. Obviously we were not sure if posting this was a good idea, but the truth is the truth, and perhaps it’s time you heard it.
