and here they'd thought he was down for the Count, har har har har

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 26 October 2003 14:06 (9 years ago) Permalink

Maybe he is trying to follow Hendrik Möbus' example of fleeing to the US and claiming political asylum?

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 26 October 2003 15:24 (9 years ago) Permalink

I had no idea he was my age when he did that. That somehow makes it more disturbing.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 26 October 2003 16:21 (9 years ago) Permalink

Möbus is in the U.S. now? wtf?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 26 October 2003 18:52 (9 years ago) Permalink

Möbus fled to the US for a short while two years ago after he violated parole in Germany by saying some nasty things, but he was quickly seized and extradited and is back in a German prison. Anyway, I remember reading that Vikernes was eligible for a shortened sentence ending in 2006, so fleeing now would not seem very logical.

This is sufficiently vague that I like to amuse myself by wondering what they were.

roxy the five-panel one of Varg is actually one of the most affecting things I've ever seen online, I have to say! I mean, Varg's an asshole, and believes in a lot of shit I think is utter garbage, but as with a lot of extremist thought, there's a kernel here or there that's really resonant, and that bit - "who were the first churchburners? how much more destructive were they?" - really gets to me

J0hn D., Monday, 6 August 2007 03:41 (5 years ago) Permalink

Mid 2008, apparently. It will be fifteen years then...can't believe how quickly that went by (for me, not for him I guess).

Funny that in the current climate these then-headline-grabbing 'terrorist' events look really tame now. Plane crashes, exploding trains, flaming jeeps, live beheadings - the satanist movement has really been upstaged royally.

Siegbran, Monday, 6 August 2007 12:38 (5 years ago) Permalink

don't think your average joe even paid much attention at the time (outside of scandinavia, that is)

Charlie Howard, Monday, 6 August 2007 13:59 (5 years ago) Permalink

"who were the first churchburners? how much more destructive were they?"

Yes, but it's somewhat amusing that for all his glorification of chaos and destruction in the end he just complains that "the Christians did it before".

Marco Damiani, Monday, 6 August 2007 14:11 (5 years ago) Permalink

I think his philosophy is more of a "take the power back" one, not a "they did it first, so why not?" one. The dude is crazy, though. He believes aliens came to Earth and mated with Aryan women to produce a more perfect race!

And thanks, John, it had a similar effect on me when I watched the movie, that's why I started making them in the first place.

more than a kernel, in my opinion. Christianity should be wiped off the face of the planet.

Here's true madness:

The Pope's Pears: The vaginal pear was used on woman who had sex with the Devil or his familiars. The rectal pear was used on passive male homosexuals and the oral pear was used on heretical preachers or lay persons found guilty of unorthodox practices. Inserted into the mouth, anus or vagina of the victim, the pear was expanded by use of the screw until the insides are ripped, stretched and mutilated, almost always causing death. The pointed ends of the 'leaves' were good for ripping the throat, intestines or cervix open.

QuantumNoise, Monday, 6 August 2007 18:37 (5 years ago) Permalink

Dude, you certainly don't have to convince me that Christians are crazy. What do you think attracted me to metal in the FIRST place?

kind of depressing apologetics for Varg in this thread.

seriously.

circa1916, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 09:17 (5 years ago) Permalink

you're right, when you disagree with someone you must not, ever, discuss the content of their beliefs or allow that some points may be interesting, even if repellent.

you're attributing too much to Varg's 'beliefs' here. it's not really interesting or compelling at all. i could very well throw a Jew on a cross and say 'they did it first, they deserved it'.

i have no problem discussing his philosophy, i just find it unfortunate that we're giving it some amount of credence when it's so obviously idiotic and heinous.

i have to take issue with this: No matter how loud you play White Minority, the cops are always going to be on your side. thing is, white minority is satirical, about dumb white paranoia, not about how whites are actually persecuted, and it was sung by a puerto rican dude.

but otherwise this piece was rad.

I like black metal (and other metal) but I never really wondered how many of these bands are Nazis - generally assumed it was Burzum and a handful of others spoiling the fun for everyone else and getting BM tarred with a big brush. Luckily I don't wear a lot of band t-shirts, but I'd hate to be judged if I were to wear a (non-Burzum / Nazi) BM t-shirt as a process of this all the same. The idea of getting out of metal because of a few arseholes like Vikernes doesn't make sense to me...
