(how many posts can go by without a misogynistic tourette's attack)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:03 (twenty years ago) link

As I said on my blog the other day,

>I saw the Distillers’ new video the other day, and while I don’t like Brody’s voice or the band’s boring not-quite-punk music, I do like her presence, because it allows us, as a culture, to say, "Okay, Courtney, we’ve got a new girl now. Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out, huh?"

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:07 (twenty years ago) link

And I'll slay the ignorant fucker who makes the first misogynistic remark. I'm crazy about both women, though deeply annoyed at Courtney's bullshit. They're on the same damn side, though, so it's hard to take one over the other, for me at least. At the moment, though, due to Courtney's loser-status in my eyes, Brody is kicking my pink ass all over.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:08 (twenty years ago) link

Can someone please explain to me the whole concept behind linking the two? Is it just that they've both had teh sex with a male musician?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:09 (twenty years ago) link

Dom gets the prize. [I take his head.]

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:10 (twenty years ago) link

Brody. Courtney killed Kurt, man.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:17 (twenty years ago) link

Or was it El Duce?

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:17 (twenty years ago) link

You want to know why *I* enjoy these bitch rock figures? Let me start a little list of what they have/are that I devour: highly intelligent; very angry; voice that could take down skyscrapers; still figuring things out; a brand feminism that scorches; no cuteness; vulgarity; feet planted firmly on concrete; women who want to *move*; demand self-respect from others (though not always from themselves, therein lies a sticky paradox). ...Shit, I guess Brody wins afterall.

Lead singer of The Distillers.

thx.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:35 (twenty years ago) link

brody sings on "american sweetheart" so they're linked more than just superficially... but i heard they had a falling out

on the superficial tip, they have the same chin & voice (kinda)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:46 (twenty years ago) link

Courtney has a falling out with everyone she works with. It's par for the course, unfortunately. But I didn't know Brody is on her new album. Interesting.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:52 (twenty years ago) link

Has "America's Sweetheart" leaked yet? Everything I can find listed as it on P2P is just a renamed "Malibu" file, which is annoying.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:58 (twenty years ago) link

I like both of them, and hope the new Courtney album when it comes out sounds even more like Fleetwood Mac than Hole's very nice last one did. Don't think I like the new Distillers' album anywhere near as much as their first two, but I'll give it more time. When I first heard Brody a few years ago, her voice SOUNDED kinda like Courtney's to me, so they're sort of linked in my mind. (Her voice also sort of sounded like one of those McDonald guys when they were just little pre-teen kids in Red Cross, and Cartman on *South Park,* but that's neither here or there. This weekend I was playing the new album by the Tyrades from Chicago, though, and decided their girl singer is doing the Cartman/Brody thing better than Brody herself these days.)

Also: Courtney wrote better lyrics than her husband (by which I mean Curt Kobain not Falling James Moreland, who is a fine songwriter), but Brody does not write lyrics as good as her former husband (or even her possible future husband, if she ever marries Josh Homme) (whose new *Desert Sessions* album turns into annoying cabaret shtick whenever the inferior-to-Courntey-or-Brody PJ Harvey opens her damn mouth, but I guess I'm kinda getting off on a tangent so I'll stop.)

ps) I haven't heard Pink's new album yet, though it obviously deserves to be a major part of this disccusion as well. Hi Jeanne!!

chuck, Thursday, 23 October 2003 16:03 (twenty years ago) link

Hi Chuck! Who are the Tyrades???

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 23 October 2003 16:10 (twenty years ago) link

Oh, I like the past 2 Distillers albums better than Coral Fang, too. I predicted that, though...

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 23 October 2003 16:12 (twenty years ago) link

You'd LOVE the Tyrades, Jeanne Fury. They kick ass, but are not to be confused with NY's sadly defunct Tie Reds, who kicked ass as well. I'll try to track down their publicist, and get him to send you a CD!

Also, I liked that story that Jeanne told me about Brody kicking the guy in the head who was holding up a "Take Tim Back" sign. In all the time I've gone to shows, I have never seen a singer kick an audience member in the head, and it's something I wish was much more common. On the other hand, I also think she should take Tim back. So whatever.

chuck, Thursday, 23 October 2003 16:15 (twenty years ago) link

the coral fang title and art are nice though.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Thursday, 23 October 2003 16:17 (twenty years ago) link

She told that story to Spin in their Tour Diary piece, too. Oooh please tell the Tyrades people to get something to me! Yay! New band!!
Dean OTM -- the art work is fantastic. Sickly fantastic.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 23 October 2003 16:22 (twenty years ago) link

The first single/video off this new album is terrible, but the first Distillers album is way better than anything Hole ever did. So Brody wins.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 23 October 2003 17:00 (twenty years ago) link

I hate the name Brody. Then again, I used to really hate the name Courtney. That's why I call her Cricket. Anyway, if Brody sounds like pre-pubescent Red Cross, well, I've gotta get me some Distillers, then!

I, too, can't wait for America's Sweetheart. I hope she doesn't go overboard in her quest for that garage/60's punk/Mick & Keith & Anita & Marianne rock realness, though. I mean, it could be great, but it could also be corny and overbearing. Like, "Well, I'll show you who's the real rock historian around here, fellas!" I wish she'd make just one dance pop record--that remix of "Malibu" didn't cut it. And her Shakira impersonation on that 24 Hours of Courtney show on MTV was great!

I always see Tim Armstrong at the Starbucks in Silverlake. He's so cute.

Fey Dodo (Arthur), Thursday, 23 October 2003 21:17 (twenty years ago) link

And here I thought this was a Dandy Warhols thread. Sigh.
