112 confuse me

i thought it was weird enough a while back in this article when they talked about how Sean Paul was originally going to be on their first single "Na Na Na Na", but then they decided to replace him with Super Cat:

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1472500/20030610/112.jhtml

which is weird enough because, what's the logic there, "oh, anything Sean Paul does right now blows up on the radio, so yeah, let's NOT have him on our record", and because Super Cat sounds just like SP on the song anyway, so people are going to think one of 2 things when they hear it: 1) "wow, this Super Cat guy is really ripping off Sean Paul," and 2) "112 probably wanted SP on their song and he turned their asses down".

ok, whatever works for them, fine. but after they made a big stink about working 'next level' type people instead of established stars, their 2nd single, "Hot & Wet", which was originally set to feature Joe Budden, is now on the radio with, um Ludacris. what the hell?

Al (sitcom), Friday, 12 September 2003 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

the only logical answer I can think of is that Joe Budden decided to put out the 112 feature on his album, "Ma Ma Ma", as a single, which would render having a 112 f/ Budden record kind of redundant, but I've haven't heard anything about that song being pushed, so that's unlikely.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 12 September 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

so i'm thinking maybe 112 is just running scared from Budden in light of his album's disappointing sales and going with Luda the sure thing.

I kinda feel bad for the JB. I don't think his album lived up to the singles by a long shot, but it seems like he never really stood a chance of living up to expectations anyway, since half the press he got focused on the mixtape hype and positioned him as "the next 50", which is ridiculous for many reasons, not the least of which being that the White Boy he collaborates with isn't Eminem, and that his big personal struggle ("um, I used to do a lot of drugs, and now I don't") falls pretty far short of 9 bullets.

the bit about him on that Hip Hop Babylon special was pretty depressing, just because they were pretty blunt about his album quickly dropping off the charts and him going back to square one and getting to work on a 2nd album...which, if his rep isn't too hurt by the performance of this album, should do better, because really, with a few notable exceptions (50, X, Nelly), most of the big rappers of the past few years didn't blow up crazy right with their first album. but i digress.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 12 September 2003 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

forget about joe budden. how about nick cannon bringing the heat with that "I'm in an OJ throwback jersey dressed to kill" line in "Feelin' Freaky" I mean shit, I only hope that goes over the head of the nickelodeon crowd.

joshd, Friday, 12 September 2003 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"Feelin' Freaky" is great, and Cannon definitely does better with his rent-a-R.Kelly song than Budden does with his awkward-ass cameo on that Marques Houston track.

but this is all immaterial, we need to talk about how 112 is on goofy and/or cowards, which is to say, people besides me need to talk about it here.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 12 September 2003 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

311 sucks.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Friday, 12 September 2003 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I can see now that noone is going to cooperate.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 12 September 2003 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

"na na na na" sucks.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 September 2003 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry al i dont know what to say!

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 September 2003 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

bad boy owes supercat a favor!!

trife (simon_tr), Friday, 12 September 2003 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, "na na na na" has its merits but overall it's a bit weak.

I have a theory that Super Cat only got the Star Trak deal because Pharrell's really into that song he did with Sugar Ray back in the day.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 12 September 2003 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"frontin" is the great lost sugar ray single.

(nb: this is why it sucks.)

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 September 2003 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Supercat! Or I used to back in the day...wasn't he Don Dada? or fuck am I confusing him with Mad Lion? shit I can never keep all these dancehall guys straight. Shabba Ranks is the ugly one, i think.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 12 September 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

on my cell phone, if my keys are locked and i dial 911, 911 will pop up and will allow me to call if i hit the "talk" button. anyother combination of numbers and the "KEYS ARE LOCKED" screen comes up.
EXCEPT...
if i hit 112, the lock comes off and the call icon reappears (ala 911)

can i get an explanation?

joshd, Friday, 12 September 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, wasn't one of Biggie's first appearances on a Super Cat song?? Trife, do you know for sure?

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 12 September 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

a lot of dancehall guys are almost stupefyingly ugly.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 September 2003 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

thats what i was talking about!! the dolly my baby remix

trife (simon_tr), Friday, 12 September 2003 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 September 2003 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a cat, and it keeps meowing and trying to kill this imperfection in the paint on the wall. I guess it kinda looks like a bug from across the room.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Friday, 12 September 2003 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

not that Sean Paul is really that good-looking or cool-seeming*, but you realize how much more so he is than Super Cat in that 112 video, he is just so dorky it hurts.

*see: the "Make It Clap" rmx video in which SP looks incredibly lifeless and uncomfortable in the outfits that surely label-appointed stylists made him wear, especially puffy coats that you just know his Caribbean ass isn't used to.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 12 September 2003 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

supercat was also on the kriss kross jump remix if i recall

trife (simon_tr), Friday, 12 September 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

btw, i really object to all the hate on "Frontin'", it totally redeems, or at least transcends the last dozen goofy-disco-falsetto type Neptunes tracks.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 12 September 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes....that's Supercat....Mad Lion was friends with KRS-One. Now I remember.....Okay, another one, Mr. Trife:

I'm wondering, was that Baby My Dolly before or after Party and Bullshit was on the Dr. Dre & Ed Lover Who's the Man soundtrack, because I can't remember which I saw first.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 12 September 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, any Mad Cobra fans in the house?

"Fleeeex! Time to 'ave seeeex!"

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 12 September 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

party and bullshit was first, from 93!! that whole soundtrack is pretty good, lovely mary j song, decent pete rock and house of pain tracks, last track weirdly samples giant steps.

trife (simon_tr), Friday, 12 September 2003 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i quite like na na na still, r kelly would deal with that floaty lack of impetus a bit better but the spragga + lady saw remix is cool

Chip Morningstar (bob), Friday, 12 September 2003 08:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean people have endorsed worse things

Chip Morningstar (bob), Friday, 12 September 2003 08:13 (twenty-two years ago)

forthcoming frontin remix will get ilm buggin tho!

Chip Morningstar (bob), Friday, 12 September 2003 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah na na na is pretty good, subtle and impossible to tire of! i think 112 made the right decisions in both these cases... supercat is better than sean paul (sorry tim :)), and ludacris is better than joe budden.

minna (minna), Friday, 12 September 2003 08:36 (twenty-two years ago)

the song with luda on it isnt very good tho, i much prefer na na na

minna (minna), Friday, 12 September 2003 08:45 (twenty-two years ago)

113 rocks!

(or rather, les rappeurs de 113, ils rockent)

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

118 118

Chip Morningstar (bob), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

btw, i really object to all the hate on "Frontin'", it totally redeems, or at least transcends the last dozen goofy-disco-falsetto type Neptunes tracks.

This is perhaps the wrongest statement of the day. "Frontin'" is a great beat marred and defaced by fucking horrible singing; I wish it had been a full-on Jay-Z track.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

damn, that was like right after midnight when I posted that and I already won for the day! is that a new record, Dan? I really have to say, it's an honor. anyway, i was just saying I like it a lot more than "Beautiful" or "Excuse Me Miss", mainly for the pre-chorus part (then we locked eyes, etc) and the bridge. some of the reasons for dismissing the song are admittedly volid, but melodically I think it's the best thing Pharrell's done since probably "U Don't Have To Call".

Al (sitcom), Friday, 12 September 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

and anyway whether you think Pharrell's singing is problematic is a moot point, because I was comparing it to to other songs that feature his wince-inducing falsetto.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 12 September 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a moot point in the sense that if you think his falsetto is a liability to songs rather than an asset, an entire song of it is going to be the definition of "creeping aural horror".

Actually, after hearing them sing together at the VMAs for about 5 seconds, I think they should have recorded this song with Chester from Linkin Park doing the falsetto singing because they both sang the "Beautiful" riff and Chester was about 8 million times better at it than Pharrell was, PLUS it would have been a total head-fuck (screamy-whiny Linkin Park frontman goes ghetto-smooth in year's most intentionally ironic single!).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 September 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The Lady Saw Remix of "Na Na Na" is fantastic! Much better than the original which sounded great in the middle of a mix I heard but was a bit tune-devoid by itself.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 13 September 2003 06:52 (twenty-two years ago)
