Fireball was kind of a sandwich album, wasn't it? Pretty tepid compared to what came before and after.

Actually I was kidding, I don't really want any Mk. I or Mk III stuff on there. Put "Child in Time" and "Space Truckin'" (Made in Japan version)(thus giving me "Mandrake Root" for all intents and purposes anyway)(as well as whole lot of extra music!) on there instead.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 00:12 (twenty years ago) link

Can i just take the time here to say that Dreammare by Uriah Heep is the coolest song that i have listened to in the last 48 hours. Oh, and i need a new copy of Look At Yourself. Okay, Purple fans, resume listing.

"Dreammare" has a great, crunchy guitar sound and a great wah-ed out solo by Box, yes it is true!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 00:18 (twenty years ago) link

and to think some people still believe that they were all extended keyboard solos and dragon-worship. Hah!

"Fireball was kind of a sandwich album, wasn't it? Pretty tepid compared to what came before and after."

Other than the country tune, which is more out of place and goofy than horrible, I think this album is as good as 'In Rock'. The studio outtakes are also pretty good on the Fireball deluxe reissue.

Anyone know why Rod Evans gets to be in the hall of fame, but not Nick Simper?

(Also the header image they're using features Joe Lynn Turner, who wasn't inducted either whoooooops)

Hamilton, Joe Frank & Two-Thirds of Asphyx (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 24 August 2016 06:58 (seven years ago) link

Such a weird organization. It's not like there were a million members of Deep Purple, if the band gets in why not induct every member of the band? Who cares? Who are these grown children making phone calls saying, "nah, Joe Lynn Turner doesn't get to be in the hall of fame, or Tommy Bolin rest his soul." Who are these weirdos?

I really like the Bolin record. He's no Blackmore, and he sounds like trash on Blackmore-era songs (the solos anyway) but the record is great, better than Stormbringer I think

I was subbing for a music teacher today who had all kinds of instruments on her trolley. After a video clip called "Plinka Plinka," I made musical history by playing some "Smoke on the Water" on a ukulele for a kindergarten class (and, inspired by Jack Black, had them bobbing their heads).

Josefa, Sunday, 27 February 2022 04:15 (two years ago) link

There are some decent rhythms and riffs on Burn, Stormbringer and Come Taste the Band, but Coverdale (pompous) and Hughes (generic) as singers just put me off.
My top ten, unusually heavy on Mark I:

Hush
Shield
Chasing Shadows
Bird Has Flown (Purple Passages version)
Black Night
Speed King
Child in Time
Fireball
Highway Star
Space Truckin'

the '74/'75 Purple might have evolved into something like Wild Cherry, but Coverdale's vocals were too buttrock for that to happen

Josefa, Sunday, 27 February 2022 18:57 (two years ago) link

I start with the Gillan era and last through Coverdale/Hughes (Made In Europe is a surprisingly good live album) but they don't have a single front-to-back great album. Always a few great songs and a bunch of lazy filler.

Coverdale (pompous)

I mean, I get this but they also talk in the Burn reissue booklet about how Coverdale as a nerdy, chubby, spotty guy when they found him so it makes it extra funny that he just has this ridiculous voice. I love that shit, personally.

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 1 March 2022 13:15 (two years ago) link

It's not personal with Coverdale, I just don't buy his attitude. I'm not even that familiar with Whitesnake.
You could say Rod Evans sounds just as full of himself, but on his better songs and the Captain Beyond stuff I linked above, he communicates something more than just puffed-up self-agrandisment. Evans is also uncommon and interesting as a baritone singing hard rock.
