Günter Schickert

so as not to clutter up the Last 'X' Records thread, discussion of echo-guitar maestro Günter Schickert can continue here.

There's not a huge catalog to discuss, and very little of it is readily obtainable, but the man deserves a thread. As spacy guitar/multitrack statements go, Uberfallig is as certifiably classic as Manuel Göttsching's Inventions..., Riccardo Zappa's Celestion and Chatka or any of the A.R & Machines gear.

has anyone heard Samtvogel or the pre-solo GAM material?

any knowledge of Schickert's current whereabouts? With all the Teutonic titans who have passed on, I only hope he's still with us.

much preferable to me. early trance music made with hardly any overtly electronic sounds; the acoustic guitar and drum kit set through delays in the same way, but the effect is entirely different. real desert music.

for all his reliance on electronics, i think MG still whipped up some beautiful noise.

if you prefer Schickert's earthier approach, i'm guessing you'd fall hard for Riccardo Zappa. intricate acoustic fretwork - almost flamenco, almost classical - filtered through multiplex layers of delay and gentle distortion. busier than MS but no less lovely, with an alluring Mediterranean mien. "Desert music" in an even more literal sense. RZ's output goes downhill after the first two, cited above and salvaged by Mellow not long ago.

I do like those Göttsching records. Some of it more than others. I agree Inventions is very nice.

But the key appeal of Uberfallig is the snakey spiraling minimalism. All delays, not much reverb; the overall sound is acoustic and dry, which is extremely rare: hypnotic trance music without traditional electronic sounds and referents. I bought it back when I was buying everything on Sky, due to the Cluster connection, this is one of the times I was deeply rewarded.

I will certainly look out for the RZ records, they sound great.

i've got sant vogel (and nothing else of his) but hadn't played it in a while. so just did and was surprised at how enjoyable it is. there's the ambient feel but it's also quite classic kosmische - like the softer parts of can and neu. vocals too.

good lord i wish. _uberfallig_ is great, i like the blending of germanic echo-obsession with some field recordings (or am i hallucinating those?). i have this vague hope someone will reissue samtvogel and GAM, but then no one's getting around to the early achim reichel material either.

Artist: SCHULZE AND GUNTER SCHICKERT, KLAUS
Title: The Schulze-Schickert Session
Label: MIRUMIR (RUSSIAN FEDERATION)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: MIR 100704CD
"For the first time, from the vaults of electronic music guru, Klaus Schulze, comes The Schulze-Schickert Session, a rare and previously unreleased private session featuring echo-guitar pioneer Günter Schickert. Recorded on 26 September 1975 in Klaus Schulze's home studio in Hambuehren, Germany, Schulze can be heard playing an EMS Synthi A, as well as keyboards, and a Syntanorma, while Schickert plays a 12-string Framus with metal strings and also sings on a few tracks. Although Schickert's name is little-known outside of a very select circle of krautrock fans, he was a key member of the Berlin free jazz scene of the 1960s and a pioneer of the echo-guitar. Just prior to the recording of this informal session, Schickert's first LP, Samtvogel, was released on the seminal Brain label. On the two bonus tracks, found only on theCD version, Schickert's playing ebbs, as Schulze takes on the more dominant role."

Whoa, haven't heard that one. Is it in a similar vein to Ueberfallig?

well tbh i really need to listen to it again on headphones that don't make it sound like the swell maps pay tribute the faust tapes from inside a cardboard box

TBH if you put that on a sticker on the front I'd probably buy it.

You mean that Swell Maps' double album "Whatever Happens Next" basically?

Listening to Kinder In Der Wildnis on actual functioning speakers now and it's still pretty lo-fi. I think it sounds a lot more punk rock than Überfällig, still some floaty kosmische tracks, but some of it's a lot more driving like he's been off listening to Chrome or something in the interim.

Well yes, if you want to hear recordings of a 14 year old Epic Soundtracks footling about with pipes and plumbing it's a must

Okay this is pretty great. Way more chaotic and noisy than I was expecting from him.
