the boxtops were more legendary than big star??

I would guess that more music listeners would recognise one of the Boxtops' hits over anything that Big Star released. This is not comparing the substance of either band's output, just the actual popularity of the groups.

me thinks that these Big Star defenders may be protesteth a bit too much. I see where you were coming from, bahtology, and I would agree with you. The Boxtops would be much more recognized due to the frequency of radio play that The Letter (as well as Cry like a Baby)recieves on classic and oldies radio stations. Big Star is more of a critics "in thing", even with the remake by Cheap Trick for dat 70's shoe. by the way " The Ballad of El Goodo " is primo.

Even though I loved the New York Dolls, I love the Heartbreakers even more. Johnny Thunders wasn't the most prolific songwriter but his best songs are on LAMF. Despite the notorious muddy mix ( LAMF Revisited does manage to clean it up, somewhat) LAMF and Live at Max's Kansas City show that the Heartbreakers could be contenders when they wanted to be.

Really? I know that "The Letter" is played every so often on oldies radio but I didn't think people really associated that song with a particular group; it's just "one of those old songs you hear sometimes." Like, how many people nowadays would be able to say "The Letter" if you said "The Box Tops"?

Dukes of Stratosphear OWN this thread. I can't stand XTC (despite putting a White Horse on one of their covers, and imitating the Avengers in videos) but the Dukes are possibly one of my favourite psych bands ever.

I much prefer New Order to Joy Division, but I don't think it's a good answer to this question because anyone who still "purports" that NO is a lesser group knows not what they say. It might have been justified when they first announced that they were going to stay together and add one of their girlfriends to the lineup, but not today...
