Lovesliescrushing is a great band to see live but their production quality on the two albums that I own are disappointing. I was curious how the new Astrobrite stuff compares to Loveliscrushing, and is the production better?

My thoughts, but keep in mind I think the production quality you're complaining about is in fact utterly essential to the way Scott Cortez does his music. I love that murky, enveloping sonic boom/crush sound he gets, it's just jawdropping at points.

It sounds like he recorded his material with a normal bias cassette tape. It's muddy sounding like a a bootleg. The music is great, but the production is disappointing.

That's why I was hoping the Astrobrite material was better produced.

He did -- the first album, at least, was recorded solely on a four-track machine using such a tape. I believe the second one was as well -- since then he does a lot of recording to computer though I'm not sure of the mix. You can argue (reasonably) that this is a case of lo-fi being a virtue; I'm just thinking that it's more what he had to hand.

3 years pass...

OK I finally heard some Astrobrite shit - fucking brilliant!!

The only one I heard thats already been released was from Pink Shiny Ultrablast. Is that a good record?? or should I get Crush?? or is there something else I should try to track down?? I'm loving the lo-fi sound, so I'm guessing Pink Shiny Ultrablast or Crush over Supercrush right??

I only ask cause I've been recording some shit like this for the last 3 or 4 years. You always wonder if there's something out there you don't know about, you know.. I'd forgotten bout Glifted. I heard a bit of that record a time or two - pretty good. Just tryin to see what else is out there.

uh wow i didn't know this band existed until i found them on last.fm. and i'm a lovesliescrushing fan. wow wow wow.

their records are hard to find and expensive, though.

1 year passes...

Crush is being reissued on vinyl by a new label here in Chicago, never heard it before this last weekend, but it is excellent! It is (seems to me) very, very heavily indebted to MBV, but of course it's home recorded 4-track. That said, it is astonishing to me how he is able to capture the emotion of these kinds of layered sounds with such limited tools.

the first Astrobrite album (Crush) was re-recorded a in much higher fidelity and released as Super Crush, with some re-recorded EP tracks thrown in. the re-recordings are far superior to the originals, and it seems weird that Crush was the one that was reissued last year.
