R. Kelly is at his best when being sinewy or ridiculous (or both).

"Fiesta" remix
"You Remind Me Of My Jeep"
"Down Low"

These three songs are head and shoulders above everything else he's done (except maybe "I Like (The Crotch On You)").

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:13 (twenty years ago) link

I like the album version of "Feelin on Yo Booty" best!

Also, any R Kelly POX is incomplete unles it represents the "inspirational" R - I'll take "The World's Greatest" for that

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:23 (twenty years ago) link

AAARGH that's the worst of his inspirational songs!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:46 (twenty years ago) link

"Home Alone" is my all-time favorite from him.

It's the record that single-handedly got me back into pop music when it came out, no joke.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 16 June 2003 16:33 (twenty years ago) link

I just heard 'Laundromat' for the first time a couple days ago. It's absolutely stunning.

Adam A. (Keiko), Monday, 16 June 2003 16:56 (twenty years ago) link

well Dan you wouldn't replace it with that awful last one on TP2.com would you, or "I Believe I Can Fly," would you? 'cause those ones even make me retch & I've got a strong stomach

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 16 June 2003 17:04 (twenty years ago) link

My replacement for "World's Greatest": "I Wish," which, like the best of the Maudlin School of R. Kelly Songwriting, is both really soppy and completely weird. (The mid-song dialogue with his [presumably dead] mother is extraordinary -- in large part because it actually works.) The ending, where he sings "Come on and braid my hair" over and over, is the best renunciation-of-fame moment in the history of pop, I think.

Ess, Monday, 16 June 2003 17:07 (twenty years ago) link

I'd replace it with "Gotham City". (That is a completely lie, BTW; it would have to be "I Believe I Can Fly".)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 16 June 2003 17:09 (twenty years ago) link

more pls! (i started this thread bc i don't know that much more than the 10 songs i listed and i need more!)

minna (minna), Monday, 16 June 2003 21:50 (twenty years ago) link

that dialogue's not with his mother, it's with his homey - and that song is truly truly great, but it's Melancholy R, not Inspirational R, so "World's Greatest" stays

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 16 June 2003 21:53 (twenty years ago) link

I haven't heard his first two albums or Chocolate factory, so this list consists solely of songs from the self-titled, R., and Tp-2.com

Feelin' On Yo' Booty
Down Low
What I Feel/Issues
I Wish
Be Careful (the duet he did with Sparkle)
Fiesta
When A Woman's Fed Up
If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time
You Remind Me Of My Jeep
Et Cetera

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 16 June 2003 22:03 (twenty years ago) link

at number 11 is "Dancing With A Rich Man," which is ruthlessly clawing at Et Cetera for the 10 spot so it deserves special mention.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 16 June 2003 22:06 (twenty years ago) link

More "I Wish" confusion: isn't he talking with his dead homey on the remix (also great, if memory serves)? And maybe the spoken-word dead-momma dialogue is only in the video. Or maybe I'm just muddled up altogether.

And could I put in a word for "What Would You Do," the new song he's done with the Isley Bros.? Or, uh, some of the early Aaliyah stuff? Or any of his great dialogue songs? I mean, the man's the best weird-fucked-up genius in pop right now.

Ess, Tuesday, 17 June 2003 12:51 (twenty years ago) link

best thing about the admittedly great "I Wish" remix: his plea that radio people PLEASE not take the word "nigga" off the track.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 16:18 (twenty years ago) link

Two major ones to add to the lists here:

"Half on a Baby"
"R&B Thug"

scott woods (s woods), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 16:28 (twenty years ago) link

I still can't believe I'm the only person to have ever big upped "Home Alone" on ILM ever.

This track smokes. Was it just a Detroit thing?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 29 June 2003 07:21 (twenty years ago) link

it smokes, it smokes, but not enough lyrical pull to make my POX.

I can't believe people aren't fainting at the mere mention of 'Fiesta remix'. I put it on a mixtape yesterday and I've basically only listened to that song on repeat since then. The singing is pure genius..

The new song he's done with the Big Tymers is good. Sounds like Timbaland does the beat too (and he makes the brief Timbo cameo at the end of the video.) Timbaland, Mannie Fresh, R Kelly - thats a star-studded line up fo sho.

I actually prefer the original version of Fiesta to the remix.

deej.., Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Likewise! Jay-z's the reason "Don't Let Me Die" makes my top 11-20

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:54 (eighteen years ago) link

you prefer the album version of "in the kitchen" to the remix? i couldn't feel more strongly to the contrary. to me, the album is weighed down by a lot of dreck, but the remixed "in the kitchen" and esp. "happy summertime" are terrific singles.

asl, Thursday, 7 July 2005 20:07 (eighteen years ago) link

I love In The Kitchen (Remix), probably makes that 11-20, but its sort of like Godfather II in that it requires deep knowledge of the original to work at its fullest (though admittedly the combined effect is tremendous). Both the original track and The Godfather work better for me as a stand alones, and I rate them slightly higher due to this.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 7 July 2005 20:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Aaliyah's "Back and Forth" would have to make it for me. Likewise "Laundromat" by Nivea.

Candicissima (candicissima), Thursday, 7 July 2005 20:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Be Careful (w/ Sparkle)
Et Cetera
Snake
Heaven, I Need A Hug
Don't Let Me Die
Red Carpet (Pause, Flash)
Trapped In The Closet (all of it, fuck it)
Sex In The Kitchen (Remix)
Remote Control

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 7 July 2005 20:25 (eighteen years ago) link

those are less permanent (already I'm thinking "Happy Summertime," "What I Feel/Issues," etc etc)

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 7 July 2005 20:26 (eighteen years ago) link

"remote control" is great. i love the falsetto/prince thing. and the lyrics are pretty funny (the nipples on charge line is great !).
