Cannot believe this hasn't been done.
Can't believe it was done in 2003!! I figured we had another five years from now at least.

'81?
Jerry Floyd = hardest working man in showbiz in 19 whenever obv.
― Tom D (Tom D.), Monday, 7 March 2011 13:36 (fifteen years ago)
.. nah must be later:
"Discovered while busking in the streets of London, One the Juggler main-men Rokko (vocals/guitar) and Lushi (bass guitar) signed a deal with Regard Records (home of Haysi Fantayzee) and recruited second guitarist Lin Minchin and drummer Steve Nicol (sax player Ian Trimmer remained an unofficial member), releasing a slew of singles throughout 1983. Releasing their debut album, Nearly a Sin, in 1984, the band received initial interest from the British press, but it didn't translate into sales. By the release of their second album (produced by the legendary Mick Ronson), Some Strange Fashion, Minchin and Nicol were gone, leaving Rokko, Lushi, Trimmer, and Ronson to handle most of the duties. Within a year of its release, Rokko, Lushi, and Trimmer had split and One the Juggler were just a memory."

Think Crown of Thorns were a neo-Prog band but I might be confusing them with a Pallas song. 83 or 84 sounds about right for that line-up.
― Pauls to the Wall (Noodle Vague), Monday, 7 March 2011 13:42 (fifteen years ago)
"Crown Of Thorns was one of the forerunners of the "disco/synth" influenced techno sound, albeit with a "punky" edge, that would become all the rage a decade later. They made their first album appearance on the Illegal Records collection The Defiant Pose in 1983 with "Gone Are The Days." Their debut EP followed in the US later that year. In 1984, five more songs appeared in the UK only, in various 12" and 7" combinations: "Kingdom Come", "Guns In The Name Of God", "World Radio", "Diamond Jim" and "No Man's Land". The band's output seems, abruptly, to have ended there. An anticipated debut album never materialized and the band soon faded from memory, reduced to nothing more than an entry on William Orbit's resumé..."

Vardis certainly had "a look", don't think that the images will link though. All these buggers seemed to play there every week of the 80s.

whoops
They once played Hamilton's then heavy metal pub Blazers (long gone) in early 90s. Motorbikes were apparently parked in the hundreds along side streets next to the pub.

I doubt Marcello was there to back this story up sadly
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 7 March 2011 14:00 (fifteen years ago)
The band were originally formed under the name 'Quo Vardis' after the 1950's Roman epic film, Quo Vadis. This was later abbreviated to Vardis.
lol they're some kind of Platonic Ideal of NWOBHM band names

I do not enjoy the gravel-voiced Hard Rock stylings of Nazareth, I have to say.
Note presence of Jerry Floyd too
― Tom D (Tom D.), Monday, 7 March 2011 14:18 (fifteen years ago)
I remember Jerry Floyd, he'd DJ between the bands at the Marquee and always play "Lights Out" by UFO. I must've seen Dumpy & co anywhere between 5 and 10 times through the 80s, usually supporting Hawkwind but iirc they were on the bill at Venom's "7th Date Of Hell" gig-cum-comedy show at Hammersmith, 1984?
I'll shut up now.

Anyway, Dumpy's Rusty Nuts changed their name to DRN at one point to make themselves look more like a serious band. Lasted about a year I think then they went back to playing the Bulldog Bash under the old name. Dumpy himself went through a weird cross-dressing phase towards the end of the 80s, looking like Roy Wood in a tutu. Quite horrible really.

Photos of said phase were what I most remembered being used for the MM parody mentions.

SOme of that long Stray song sounded strangely Neu!-ish.
― ka£ka (NickB), Monday, 7 March 2011 16:20 (fifteen years ago)
I remember that DRN phase. That must've been around 87 or so. My hometown had a lot of bikers and goths and not a hell of a lot to do so Dumpy's used to come around once or twice a year and play to a good sized crowd. I certainly knew a few people who took them pretty seriously. I saw them live twice, as far as I can remember. Once at Reading when there was only one stage. The other time in Ayr at some kind of Saturday afternoon outdoor rock show, where they headlined over a similar local band called The Flat Stanley.

― Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 7 March 2011 18:17 (fifteen years ago)
I have the feeling that Dumpy's fire was stolen somewhat by The Hamsters, who gigged harder and played more Hendrix covers.
― clearly I have defeated this earthworm (Matt #2), Monday, 7 March 2011 18:18 (fifteen years ago)

― Run Westy Run Megatorrent (MaresNest), Monday, 7 March 2011 18:25 (fifteen years ago)
it sure is considering i wasnt even born there! Prestwick people actually hated ayr people and vice versa. Prestwick casuals once joined up with killie ones to fight ayr casuals. the 80s were fucking stupid.

XP - Ha, well chances are you saw me playing Thin Lizzy and Skynnrd songs in a very average pub band. Didn't get into the Cardiacs until I moved down to London, although I was mad on Levitation at that time. I played in and out of various Prestwick and Ayr based bands too. Sorry for the derail, maybe we can start a thread devoted to bad Ayrshire bands and talk about Foolish Hit or somesuch.

I saw a lot of bands there but mostly can't remember who. From what I remember the Stretchheads and Nyah Fearties were the only notable bands prepared to do a gig there. Worst venue ever, right?

Well the biker nights were okay as long as you didn't stray from the canon. Never saw any gigs there, only played I bet I can think of a few worse venues. Oh yea, that place in Ayr with the posters on the ceiling.
― Run Westy Run Megatorrent (MaresNest), Monday, 7 March 2011 18:43 (fifteen years ago)
Ayr Pavilion or Jonesy's?
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 7 March 2011 18:46 (fifteen years ago)
In the context of the thread, the important point is that it's places like Ayr where Dumpy's had their core audience and they were liked and respected as a great live band in places like that. In these type of towns, any band that can be bothered playing there gets essentially the same audience. Whether it was The Godfathers, Thrilled Skinny, Dumpy's Rusty Nuts or The Sultans of Ping, they all play to the same mix of goths, bikers and indie kids. I always thought it was nuts that people were into shit like DRN but whatever. At least there were no casuals there.
― everything, Monday, 7 March 2011 18:47 (fifteen years ago)
id loved to have seen the casuals getting beaten up by the bikers tbh
