(don't give a cold fart 'bout terry vagon, really. nor a much warmer one 'bout euro"vision", actually)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 24 May 2003 22:40 (twenty years ago) link

Absolutely everybody in Europe really, *really* hates the UK now don't they?

I can't say I'm remotely surprised of course but I am extremely glad that I'm not planning on going anywhere abroad any time soon (except insofar as that means I'm stuck here of course!).

Oh and Terry Wogan is an arrogant, fatuous, pompous windbag imho fwiw.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Sunday, 25 May 2003 04:14 (twenty years ago) link

Oh come ON! He's funny. But not as hilarious as Belgium nearly winning.

nathalie (nathalie), Sunday, 25 May 2003 07:23 (twenty years ago) link

Terry Wogan is the equivalent of the guy behind you at the cinema that just won't shut the fuck up during the movie.

And I had £20 on taTu to win... three points off of £70. Still, I won £2.50 of it, so...

I love eurovision. I actually thought this year was the best in ages. I voted for Turkey and Austria. I liked Estonia and Israel's entries too. I find it a bit annoying how more and more countries each year enter songs in English. taTu looked cute running around squealing in Russian. Why did so many people in the UK vote for Ireland? That was terrible.

Cathy Leech, Sunday, 25 May 2003 12:14 (twenty years ago) link

I voted for Poland, coz he was kinda like Meatloaf crossed with the dude from Aqua.

The Estonian entry should rush off to America posthaste, and have a college radio #1.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 25 May 2003 18:34 (twenty years ago) link

did noone else hear the hilariously inappropriate
music that was played in the background between songs?
this included pixies, dead can dance and stereolab!!

joni, Sunday, 25 May 2003 19:59 (twenty years ago) link

Yes Dom, couldn't agree more. A pleasant surprise really, a relief from the unremitting disco cheese.

Romania was the best, did I detect some 2-step influence in there? Kookiest dancing was Austria. Tatu had trouble holding the tune didn't they? And as for the UK, urgh . . null, zero, rien. Why does the UK struggle so much with the Eurovision? You'fd think they had the skills and know-how to take it out as often as Ireland.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 25 May 2003 23:38 (twenty years ago) link

I thought Romania, Croatia and (especially) Slovenia should have been right up there. Turkey was the best, though. What was to like about Belgium? It was just sort of there. Did people vote for Austria as a joke?

Level of support for Spain and Norway utterly baffling. The former was just crap and the latter was like: "What if one of the ugly blokes from Shocking Blue tried their hand at a solo career"? (Well, not really...)

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 26 May 2003 05:54 (twenty years ago) link

Did you enjoy the 'banter' between the hosts?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 26 May 2003 06:15 (twenty years ago) link

Could anyone? Well, it was cute in a really dorky way, but not enjoyably so.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 26 May 2003 07:59 (twenty years ago) link

I enjoyed Terry Wogan hating them.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 26 May 2003 08:38 (twenty years ago) link

Colin, I'd rather say Romania's entry was influenced by Bomfunk MC's "Freestyler" - about a four years too late.

This year's Eurovision was great - dull overblown ballads kept to minimum, lots of chirpy disco, and a voting that was actually exciting. I started pulling my hair in despair when near the end it seemed that Belgium would win with their Womad-reject crap, but then Slovenia saved the day and put Turkey up where their belong (tho Norway was my fave). Oh, and glad to see I'm not the only person in the world who enjoyed Slovenia's entry.

t.A.t.u were very disappointing, it was like "we are t.A.t.U. and this is Eurovision so why bother and write a good tune". Also, did I just imagine it, or was there lost of booing in the audience whenever they would score points?

Mind Taker, Monday, 26 May 2003 19:11 (twenty years ago) link

MT: yes, there was lots of booing for t.A.T.u. in the audience. Apparently in part because of the Russia-Latvia -relations being a bit sore, as in many in ex-Soviet countries. (And in part because of the sheer "we're superstars, we" attitude they sported, which I totally loved, too few superstars in Eurovision!) Highlight of the evening: the storm of boos when Latvia gave 12 pts for t.A.T.u. I just wish they'd won to see what would have happened. Their performance was dire, though.

TATU - cute?

Surely some mistake.....?!

i'm going to use this, rather than a year-specific thread:

Eurovision: The Movie!

CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 12:51 (sixteen years ago) link

well i thought it was interesting news:

"Borat" screenwriter Dan Mazer and "History Boys" producer Damian Jones have struck a deal with Working Title Films to make a comedy movie about the Eurovision Song Contest.

The idea for "Eurovision: The Movie" was originated by Mazer and Jones, who will produce with Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner for Working Title.

This annual TV songfest brings together pop acts from 42 countries to compete for its grand prize, with the winner decided by votes from national juries. Cheesy, kitsch and often inadvertently hilarious, it's one of Europe's most-watched TV events.

Although it occasionally creates international pop stars, such as Celine Dion and Abba, its winners typically rapidly fade into obscurity.

The 52nd edition of the contest, organized by the European Broadcasting Union, took place Sunday in Helsinki, Finland. One of the fest's traditions is that the winning country hosts the next year's event. The 2006 contest was won by Lordi, a band of Finnish Goth rockers dressed as orcs.

nine years pass...

would anyone else be interested in a Eurovision track-a-day listening thread in the style of the Rod Stewart and Eagles threads? I appreciate that there is maybe a limit to how many listening threads ilm can sustain, so maybe once the Rod thread has reached its 1988 conclusion? or is there already something lined up to follow Rod?

(one issue is that nxd has a Eurovision ballot poll pending, which I wouldn't want to undermine - it looks like it's a while off, though, and hopefully a listening thread would compliment rather than impair the poll?)

ILM Ballot Polls for 2014 and beyond -- order, timing, "I would have voted if I'd known about it," etc
