Thalia Zedek (and her various bands): C/D?

Too overwraught? Too CONSTANTLY overwraught? Stevie Nicks attempting bad cabaret?

I'm gonna say classic based on the album Been Here And Gone and the Live Skull I got. Sure, she doesn't usually explain her pathetic state enough to make those who aren' sharing it sympathetic, but I really dig her voice. Live Skull's "Step," off of Snuffer, is a pretty rockin'.

Haven't heard Come or Uzi yet. Please search and destroy as well.

i dont own too much. live, she is amazing. i didnt check her out last time through (a few months ago ) but i saw her years back with come and YES her voice is something to take in!
i think one of the mission of burma guys is playing in her current line-up.

Live Skull live = treble ear Brillo
Zedek fronting Live Skull = most out-of-control, over-the-top, riveting vocalist/performer I ever saw
on par with prime Iggy I expect

but would anyone want to live like that? hell no!

Paul (scifisoul), Saturday, 17 May 2003 17:52 (twenty years ago) link

Aside from a snippy statement in Xgau's consumer guide about Come, I'm totally in the dark about Zedek's live performances. Any anecdotes or descriptions?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 17 May 2003 17:57 (twenty years ago) link

Saw her solo once, about a year ago: she steps up to the stage, slouching slightly, grabs the guitar, does a strum or two to test the tuning, cigarette in mouth (that cigarette will be at the tip of her lips or guitar for most of the show), says "Hi I'm Thalia", and simply goes at it, backed by viola and keyboard. She OWNS the room from start to finish.

With Come (whom I saw several times), add swaying and rocking during instrumental stretches, multiply smoke by two (Brokaw) and the guitar ecstacy by, oh, eleven or so.

I have Come's *Don't Ask, Don't Tell* and TZ's *Been Here and Gone*. They're both unbelievably beautiful albums.

There was a thread on Come (and Fuck) not too long ago, by the way.

weird, for a sec-or-two i wondered whether she was featured also on Knitting On The Roof, of all places... checked: she most certainly is. doing the rather good over-the-phone-conversation-version of "Do You Love Me"

word is she was a junkie and going thru nightly on-stage meltdowns during Live Skull era. imagine The Swans 3x as loud with the bass turned down and Linda Blair on vocals... (also included not-singing and slumping down writhing with puzzled panther look)

Amazing songwriter w/powerful sense of musical dynamics, and so much different than any so-called rolling stone mag "Woman In Rock".
Zedek's solo stuff I like, as well as what I've heard of Uzi, Dangerous Birds, and Live Skull, but I still remain steadfast to Come's stuff especially - Come were capable especially of putting on some of the most ferocious live shows I've seen, Zedek & Chris Brokaw's twin guitar interplay within itself puts them miles above the rock pack, and makes me thankful that I had seen them. Jay Hinman who used to author the great zine Superdope sums it up best, he gets it right that the inability to pigeonhole them made them fall through a lot of cracks, undeservedly.

THE MOST UNDERRATED RECORD OF THE 90s…..Would have to be the masterful 1992 LP/CD Eleven: Eleven from Boston’s COME. I had sung the praises of this one, their debut, in my own 90s publication Superdope from the time it came out, but I’m beginning to think maybe it’s just one of those a-little-too-indie records that’s not ever going to grab a lot of future play in the hipster cognoscenti. Fair enough. It’s not “punk”, it’s not D.I.Y., it’s definitely not “obscure” (it came out in wide release on Matador), and wow, it’s even got a girl on lead vocals and guitar. What’s so special about it? Well, along with its companion 45 “Fast Piss Blues / I Got The Blues”, Eleven: Eleven has got just about everything you’d ever ask for in a dark, dynamic, aurally gripping twin-guitar record, and then some. Thalia Zedek and Chris Brokaw, I believe I said in an earlier piece I’d written on this record, play like “fraternal twins of different mothers” – their ability to interlock and hone in together on a bleak, spiraling, whammy-bar dominated “solo” is just unreal. No, it’s not the blues, hype to the contrary – it’s rock and roll, baby, among the best of the past two decades. They claimed in an interview to take their influences from "…the Rolling Stones, Gun Club, early British bands like the Only Ones, the Go Betweens, the Bad Seeds, These Immortal Souls." And it’s telling just how far Come fell from grace after their rhythm section of Arthur Johnson and Sean O’Brien left the band, following this record’s (great) follow-up Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. The subsequent Near Life Experience was like a collection of weak demos and b-sides compared to the previous two records, lacking all the hard-hitting, tight propulsion of its predecessors.

Eleven: Eleven even feels like a concept record (though I doubt this was their intent), as it is sequenced perfectly, from the scraping, burrowing-out first track “Submerged” to the careening, out-of-control finish “Orbit”. (the CD tacks on the aforementioned 45). Zedek’s raspy vocals are angrier and her lyrics just as “poetic” as Marianne Faithfull’s justly heralded Broken English, and her band’s twenty times more energetic and aggressive. I’m not sure what production techniques were used to get that thumping drum & shimmering guitar sound, but it helps keep some kind of order in what is constantly threatening to descend into madness. When I see Eleven: Eleven sitting forlornly in the priced-to-move bins at the used CD stores, I drop a small tear for Thalia, Chris, Arthur and Sean. They deserve far better, as they created a stone cold masterpiece in 1992 that I hope will be recognized as such by more folks in due time.

um, 11:11 vs. the royal trux singles set, that'd be a good matchup.

Too overwraught? ... maybe just a bit over-rated. Dug LS pre-TZ. Marnie with the healing hands was the real superstar, not her!

lucas (lucas), Sunday, 18 May 2003 17:52 (twenty years ago) link

Come is essential, particularly 11:11, but there are also stunning moments across the rest of the catalogue ("shoot me first," "yr reign," "the recidivist.")

I am not crazy about Zedek's solo stuff, but it is better than average.

Come were such a great band. I have some fond memories of some absolutely killer live shows they played, plus they are all super-nice people. Haven't heard any of Thalia's solo stuff.

Her best record ever, by far: "Alpha Romeo" single, Dangerous Birds
Her second best record: Uzi EP

I have never had any use for any of the rest, and never will.

that uzi album is in no way shape or form BETTER than any come record. I'm sorry. I hate to tell you. And neither is dusted or any of the other live skull ones. her last solo album is the only thing that approaches the majesty of come.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 20 January 2005 02:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I've only heard like three Come tracks and they were all a little bloozy for my taste. The only Live Skull song that really stuck for me was "Step," though I kind of want to throw Positraction on again.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 20 January 2005 02:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, I guess I sort of halfway tolerated Live Skull's version of "Pusherman" once, a million years ago. But I STILL put on that Uzi EP. Even a couple months ago. And it was one of my favorite EPs in whatever year it came out. (1986 I guess? The Voice printed my top five EP list, which I believe also had on it a record by Greenhouse of Terror, whoever they are.) It is beautiful, and not ugly, and it swirls a lot while Thalia keeps her trap shut. And "Alpha Romeo" is actually an ACTUAL NEW WAVE ROCK SONG, worthy of Pylon or Romeo Void or somebody, before TZ succumbed to her silly heroin cabaret shtick.

chuck, Thursday, 20 January 2005 02:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Thalia didn't sing Pusherman!!! Marnie did (my dream noise-babe when i was a teen). And Come were plenty beautiful, you just stopped listening. Admit it! How many Come albums have you listened to? And you too, Anthony! Judge not!....blah, blah, blah...

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Really, that whole album is as good as "Step," probably.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 20 January 2005 05:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Really can't get how that Uzi record can be perceived as that much better than any of Zedek's other stuff. Only track that has ever stuck with me is 'Gabrielle' and there's songs on all the rest of her stuff that easily matches that... the aforementioned 'Step', 'Back In The Earth', 'Off To One Fucking Side', the single 'Car'... Come's cover of the Swell Maps 'Loin Of The Surf' is well worth tracking down too. I think that Live Skull only ever came over here to the UK once but I caught them a couple of times on that tour and they were fantastic.
What Jay Hinman wrote upthread nails exactly the way I feel about Come. Chuck, if you can't get past the heroin stuff, check out the second album 'Don't Ask Don't Tell'. I don't know what her (or Brokaw's) habit was like at the time of that, but thematically, as far as I can decipher, that record is mostly about plain old fucked-up heartbreak and loneliness. Definite nose-dive in quality thereafter though, some great songs but the last two are both very bitty albums.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 20 January 2005 09:37 (nineteen years ago) link

What I don’t understand is how “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” hasn’t come up on this thread yet. It’s the most perfect of all the Come records, and the soundtrack to my 1996 (yes, I know it came out in ’94). I can’t compare it against her other stuff, solo or w/ other bands, as I haven’t yet heard it.

six months pass...
FINALLY saw Thalia Zedek after, what, a decade's obsession (at least!) at the Grace Emily in Adelaide, tiny crowd, maybe 50 people, Thalia completely OWNING the room, totally magical, probably the best performance I have seen in... years? Forever? Since Diamanda Galas way back in 2002? The new album is so much stronger in the live context (and it's certainly no slouch as home listening) and the cover of "You're A Big Girl Now" is absolutely incredible live, sheer force.

I dunno if she's doing more shows in Australia but GO. SEE. HER. NOW>>> or as soon as you can.

i saw chris brokaw the other nite at the pub jamming with some dude from karate and some dude from rodan and i kept hoping that he would do one of his come songs, but he didn't.

i didn't really think that he would.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 4 August 2005 09:28 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah i must admit the one thing that would have made last night the *greatest gig ever* would have been a slab of stuff from eleven eleven or don't ask don't tell. still, gotta say, the solo material burns when you hear it live.

jon dale, Thursday, 4 August 2005 10:28 (eighteen years ago) link

i'll bet. she's great. that last album of hers was really nice.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 4 August 2005 11:10 (eighteen years ago) link

It's great that she's still out there digging away doing this stuff, in the face of what must seem like huge public indifference. Which isn't entirely unique for a musician I know, but it is kind of remarkable for someone who puts *so damn much* of herself into doing what she does. I mean on an emotional level - someone who more often than not exposes whole scary chunks of scar tissue or frailty. Gosh, I'm clumsy with words today, but she could have packed it all in ages ago, instead of putting her self through the mill the whole time, and it's wonderful and sort of a testament to her braveness that she's still willing to keep on pushing. Tremendously gratifying to hear Jon's report. What am I saying? I dunno. Thanks I guess!

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 4 August 2005 11:25 (eighteen years ago) link

i know what you mean Nick. there's no 'emotional distance' in her performances. it's astonishing to witness.

scott, yeah, the new record is magic innit? there's an australian tour cd which i couldn't pick up (i spent my last $30 for the week on the gig.) could be worth hunting down.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 4 August 2005 13:55 (eighteen years ago) link

i had a nice conversation with Jeff ( i don't really know much about his other stuff). He said they had only practiced together for a day before the gig on the island. I told him it sounded like at least three days to me! he liked that one.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 4 August 2005 14:12 (eighteen years ago) link

kevin coultas (ex-rodan) and jeff godard (ex-karate). they are both on the new record.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 4 August 2005 14:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Ah, okay. Only Chris Brokaw solo thing I've heard so far was Red Cities which was nice, but I sort of missed him interacting with other musicians on it (he played everything himself, err, right? at least it sounded like it was all recorded by one guy). So the new one sounds good to me.

Hadn't realised it was that easily come by. Had it after finding it in Dublin when I first moved there and then I think it got lost in a box of cds taht disappeared in moving.

But do enjoy it.

Also love Positraction by Live Skull. Have a poster for it somewhere but not enough clear wall space.

Always preferred the debut but DADT is right up there, Mercury Falls and German Song are two of the best things they ever did. Have heard some of the bonus stuff - love their version of the Swell Maps' Loin of the Surf.

As for other Thalia stuff, I will rep for the Live Skull records she's on until the day I die.
