TS: Rammstein vs Godsmack

My dad played me an old Rammstein CD in the car today. It sounded like Godsmack to me but my dad said they came out before Godsmack. What do you think?

Is seven years old now? Or less? I do believe Rammstein had at least one album out before Godsmack did anything...

The Rammstein CD my Dad gave me is the one with the guys's heads on it. I think it was from 1995. I was born in 1991 so it is pretty old to me.

*nods* You gotta a good point there. :-) Well, hi there, since I don't think I've seen ya posting before!

According to the All Music Guide, Rammstein formed in 1993 and released that album you're talking about, Herzeleid, in 1996. Godsmack's first album was out in 1997, but who knows when or where either band might have heard the other.

I've never heard Godsmack. "Du Hast" is great, but the rest of what I've heard from Rammstein is mediocre at best.

On the CD I listened to, songs 1, 2 and 4 are good. On the Godsmack CD that is red I like song 1, 5 and Voodoo.

Aja, if you like what you hear from the first Rammstein record, go for the other two...they're much more fun than Godsmack. And have your dad track down the video so's you can see them live, which is fun in itself.

Rammstein is much better than Godsmack, just look at the names: the gentlemen's Deathdisco/leather band took it's name from the Rammstein airforce base in Germany(can you say weekend pass? Rrr-ow). They also play with fire and shave their heads (hey, that's pretty cool, now isn't it?). The also got to be the bar band in XXX with Vin Deisel (how cool is that?).
Godsmack takes it's name from a lethal dose of heroin and they look like extras on old episodes of Headbanger's Ball (how boring). I'd rather sponsor Buck Cherry in a twelve step program than go see Godsmack do their weak metal drivel.

I don't know the names of the guys in Rammstein but I do know the singer's and drummer's in Godsmack. The singer is Sully and the drummer is Shannon. Now what kinds of names are those for guys in a band like Godsmack?!

I just Rammstein Aus Berlin at Amoeba Records in the Haight. When I listened to it in the car with my dad I thought of lifting some weights! I like it!

No no no! Godsmack, along with Days of the New, were Alice in Chains rip-offs. They sounded so much like AiC at first I thought their songs were new mediocre AiC songs when I first heard them on the radio. While they won't admit it, Godsmack obviously got their name from the AiC's song "God Smack".

Rammstein is nothing like Godsmack, and slightly more tolerable. If you want gruff german vocals, Laibach is much, much better.

Rammstein is nothing like Godsmack
Though not identical a lot of the sounds generated by the guitars in Godsmack sound like the stuff coming out from the Rammsteins.

Godsmack are better.
Godsmack are better than some bands but not Rammstein. And, I am not that big a Rammstein band, either. I do, however, like songs 1, 2 and 4 from a CD mentioned in a previous post.

How I got started writing for Alternative Press: I met editor Jason Pettigrew at a Keiji Haino show in NYC in 1994/95 or thereabouts (this was at the original Knitting Factory), we had a pleasant conversation. I pestered him for a year or more to let me write for the magazine, sending him clips from the NJ alt-weekly I was writing for, with no response. Finally, he called me up one day in late '96/early '97 and said, "Will you interview Godsmack so I don't have to?" I said yes, and have been writing for AP off and on ever since. Thanks, Godsmack!
