My dad played me an old Rammstein CD in the car today. It sounded like Godsmack to me but my dad said they came out before Godsmack. What do you think?

an old Rammstein CD

Is seven years old now? Or less? I do believe Rammstein had at least one album out before Godsmack did anything...

The Rammstein CD my Dad gave me is the one with the guys's heads on it. I think it was from 1995. I was born in 1991 so it is pretty old to me.

*nods* You gotta a good point there. :-) Well, hi there, since I don't think I've seen ya posting before!

According to the All Music Guide, Rammstein formed in 1993 and released that album you're talking about, Herzeleid, in 1996. Godsmack's first album was out in 1997, but who knows when or where either band might have heard the other.

I think you know my parents, BurmaKitty and Roman.

I've never heard Godsmack. "Du Hast" is great, but the rest of what I've heard from Rammstein is mediocre at best.

Aha! So Roman is Mr. Kitty, this I did not know. Clarity is mine! Greetings!

On the CD I listened to, songs 1, 2 and 4 are good. On the Godsmack CD that is red I like song 1, 5 and Voodoo.

Aha! So Roman is Mr. Kitty
ooooooH! I don't think my daddy will like being called that!

D'oh!

Aja, if you like what you hear from the first Rammstein record, go for the other two...they're much more fun than Godsmack. And have your dad track down the video so's you can see them live, which is fun in itself.

Rammstein is much better than Godsmack, just look at the names: the gentlemen's Deathdisco/leather band took it's name from the Rammstein airforce base in Germany(can you say weekend pass? Rrr-ow). They also play with fire and shave their heads (hey, that's pretty cool, now isn't it?). The also got to be the bar band in XXX with Vin Deisel (how cool is that?).
Godsmack takes it's name from a lethal dose of heroin and they look like extras on old episodes of Headbanger's Ball (how boring). I'd rather sponsor Buck Cherry in a twelve step program than go see Godsmack do their weak metal drivel.
Have a nice day.

Rammstein are far more interesting then Godsmack.

I second that!
Godsmack == Clone of Metallica circa 1986
Rammstein == An Eeeeevil, Gay Kraftwerk.

I don't know the names of the guys in Rammstein but I do know the singer's and drummer's in Godsmack. The singer is Sully and the drummer is Shannon. Now what kinds of names are those for guys in a band like Godsmack?!

Aja (aja), Sunday, 11 May 2003 14:22 (11 years ago) Permalink

Who's cooler?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 11 May 2003 15:08 (11 years ago) Permalink

oops I put two of Rammstien and none of Godsmack

"Hi, I'm the lead singer of Godsmack and if I weren't so stoned right now I'd introduce you to my burly security guards...wait a minute, what the fuck as you doing wearing a goddamn happy kiddy shirt, you fucker?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 11 May 2003 15:28 (11 years ago) Permalink

Godsmack is the pits.

I just Rammstein Aus Berlin at Amoeba Records in the Haight. When I listened to it in the car with my dad I thought of lifting some weights! I like it!

From left to right in the Godsmack Pic:

Deiter: Look et my Clint Eeestwood imprezzshun...Ey em now Cowboy...yessss?

Grigori: Look at me...I'm the newer, funkier George Michaels, with new collagen enhanced lips (and head.)

Bob II: Yeah, sure I'm the love child of Bob (Gilligan) Denver and the chick who played missus Howell...but now I'm all "edgy" and "dark" and that makes me cool...Right? RIGHT!?

Andrew: (depressed, he silently ponders how much his younger brother -- Richard Melville Hall -- is currently, and possibly will always be, more famous than he...Andrew Ridgeley Hall.)

Godsmack == Clone of Metallica circa 1986

I can't remember actually having heard any Godsmack, but if this were actually true then they would be great.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 12 May 2003 05:19 (11 years ago) Permalink

I should've been more specific...
Godsmack == Clone of Metallica cover band circa 1986

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 12 May 2003 10:46 (11 years ago) Permalink

Godsmack are better.

Filip, Monday, 12 May 2003 17:26 (11 years ago) Permalink

No no no! Godsmack, along with Days of the New, were Alice in Chains rip-offs. They sounded so much like AiC at first I thought their songs were new mediocre AiC songs when I first heard them on the radio. While they won't admit it, Godsmack obviously got their name from the AiC's song "God Smack".

Rammstein is nothing like Godsmack, and slightly more tolerable. If you want gruff german vocals, Laibach is much, much better.

Laibach is much, much better.
Laibach ain't better than nobody.

Rammstein is nothing like Godsmack
Though not identical a lot of the sounds generated by the guitars in Godsmack sound like the stuff coming out from the Rammsteins.

Godsmack are better.
Godsmack are better than some bands but not Rammstein. And, I am not that big a Rammstein band, either. I do, however, like songs 1, 2 and 4 from a CD mentioned in a previous post.

9 years pass...

How I got started writing for Alternative Press: I met editor Jason Pettigrew at a Keiji Haino show in NYC in 1994/95 or thereabouts (this was at the original Knitting Factory), we had a pleasant conversation. I pestered him for a year or more to let me write for the magazine, sending him clips from the NJ alt-weekly I was writing for, with no response. Finally, he called me up one day in late '96/early '97 and said, "Will you interview Godsmack so I don't have to?" I said yes, and have been writing for AP off and on ever since. Thanks, Godsmack!

I interviewed a band that he loved and he hated it so much he never let me write for AP again. So fuck you, Deftones!

1 year passes...

So Godsmack have a new song and it's shitty and stupid, and as some dude said on Twitter, it's "like a hysterical nu metal update of Boston's "Rock And Roll Band"" -- really, listen to the lyrics and be amazed:

Kicker -- my friend Jeff Copas of the band Sixteen Deluxe just said this on FB:

True story: Having played The Middle East in Cambridge in 1995, while Godsmack played downstairs, I can rightfully attest that 1) no one was listening; and 2) no one was caring about the empty room they were playing to. We did laugh about them the rest of the tour, however, which was invaluable.
