What do yall think about this? It's been done since May but they can't release the DVD until after October or something until it plays at some film festival in Toronto. I am REALLY EXCITED about this, being something of a fanatic (and the only person I know who owns every single album). But...will this open our boy up to a lame ass yuppie sorta mass appeal, of diletante assholes who will treat him like some kind of pet cause and joust us over the albums on ebay? Will he be treated by hipsters who don't respect his art as some sort of morbid curiosity a la Daniel Johnston and Wesley Willis? (Damn you, Irwin Chusid!!)

Anyway...What do yall think?

the trailer rules

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 00:12 (twenty years ago) link

I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully one of the artsy fartsy cinemas will pick it up around here. If not, I'm sure it'll show in Boston or NYC or both.

Ian Johnson, Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:06 (twenty years ago) link

I so want to see this. I'd love to see this in a theater, actually.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:10 (twenty years ago) link

the bit in the trailer where they make the Six and Six cover blink gives me a chill.. in the best possible way

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:12 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, mixed in with the creepiest part of the song, too.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:17 (twenty years ago) link

I am waiting patiently to see it. And I about have all the albums, Roger, so we can compare notes. ;-) Actually I have a little project involving those albums planned, but we'll see...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:28 (twenty years ago) link

totally, Ned. I'm sure I have them all, I have a checklist. I'm even re-buying the CD reissues of teh albums I have on vinyl! Sick.

oh man, i can't wait for the movie

while we're on the topic, what are some of yr favorite Jandek albums?

Mine by far is You Walk Alone, but also always loved Blue Corpse. I'm almost freakishly familiar with each album, and love them all for different reasons - wanted to get other perspectives. Tell which and why.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:31 (twenty years ago) link

Whichever one has the weird album side song about wanking or something, I'm drawing a temporary blank...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:33 (twenty years ago) link

ah, The Electric End. A classic song. It's from Lost Cause.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:36 (twenty years ago) link

Thank you, that was it. Genius in astounding ways.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:41 (twenty years ago) link

I'm partial to Interstellar Discussion, The Telegraph Melts and I also quite enjoy Blue Corpse. Blue Corpse is definitely what I'd call the most conventional Jandek album; melody, rhythm, chords, structure..but so anguished, it makes me want to cry.

Ian Johnson, Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:46 (twenty years ago) link

I dunno...Blue Corpse is maudlin, downer, cracked...I'd say that You Walk Alone is the most "conventional" (using that term of course in the loosest possible sense) due to the other guitarist and the near-blues structures...

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 02:08 (twenty years ago) link

i've always been a little bit partial to White Box Requiem for some reason. Modern Dances too for some unhinged Jank&Nance action

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 02:10 (twenty years ago) link

The first voice you hear in that trailer belongs to ilx0r's own Douglas Wolk!

''But...will this open our boy up to a lame ass yuppie sorta mass appeal, of diletante assholes who will treat him like some kind of pet cause and joust us over the albums on ebay?''

well it probably won't happen bcz it simply is too obscure i think. I still haven't heard any jandek but I'll probably get round to it soon.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 11:36 (twenty years ago) link

that stencil you can get on the documentary site is nice. print it out and get your spray cans ready!

M.Slaughter, Tuesday, 6 May 2003 13:34 (twenty years ago) link

i'm not the artistic one in this house. How do you make a stencil out of something printed out from a computer? Do you have to get an exacto knife and cut it yrself?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 14:59 (twenty years ago) link

yeah exactly, you print and cut it yourself. as it says on the site you need to glue the print-out stencil template to cardstock and then cut. its pretty amazing how good it looks.

M.Slaughter, Tuesday, 6 May 2003 16:04 (twenty years ago) link

The voice at the beginning of the trailer is mine...

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 16:33 (twenty years ago) link

man this movie looks GRATE!

david day (winslow), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 19:02 (twenty years ago) link

Can anyone tell me who the other people talking on the trailer are?

hamish (hamish), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 19:08 (twenty years ago) link

The woman with the glasses is Angela from Cambridge, MA record store Twisted Village. I believe that is the shop she is in there, yes.

david day (winslow), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 19:10 (twenty years ago) link

The guy with long black hair speaking towards the end is Jake Austen, who publishes Roctober.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 19:41 (twenty years ago) link

According to the websiite they can show the movie before the Toronto festival but they can't distribute any DVD/Videos. My guess is that some of the more adventerous places will screen this soon.

brg30 (brg30), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:13 (twenty years ago) link

i think the trailer is dumm

What track is being played in the trailer?

T. Weiss (Timmy), Thursday, 8 May 2003 04:16 (twenty years ago) link

There are a few tracks on it - the only one i can name at the moment is They Told me About You from Ready for the House.

hamish (hamish), Thursday, 8 May 2003 21:42 (twenty years ago) link

two years pass...
I love Jandek.

ten years pass...

The Minneapolis Underground Film Festival will be screening the documentary about Jandek called I Know You Well at the St. Anthony Main Theaters on Saturday, Oct. 10th at 1:00 p.m.. This film was shot around Jandek's two Minnesota performances in 2012 and 2013.

The filmmakers were given some up-close, behind-the-scenes access to both the Mankato and Minneapolis Jandek shows. You'll get a glimpse into the process of how these shows were developed and rehearsed, and then see actual footage from the performances. There is also extensive interview footage with "The Rep" in his hometown of Houston that reveals his thoughts on music and performance.
