Hot Hot Heat - Finally a good "new rock" band, it seems

Finally it seems "new rock" has left its punk stage and entered its new wave stage. Listening to Hot Hot Heat's "Bandages" now, which is actually an excellent single, bit like a cross-in-between Wire, The Jam and 70s XTC.

Before, The Vines have been doing some of the same stuff, and hopefully it is Vines and Hot Hot Heat rather than The Strokes and White Stripes that will define the following years' rock music.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:18 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah you got your ear to the pulsebeat of the heart of the street, man.

Geir Honky, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:24 (twenty-three years ago)

But Geir, they're not melodic enough.
I don't want any band to "define the following years' rock music." Why pigeonhole anything?

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:28 (twenty-three years ago)

God no!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Sod melodic enough; they're just not 'good' enough.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Finally it seems "new rock" has left its punk stage and entered its new wave stage

And you think this is good thing...? You wouldn't if you lived in Brooklyn.

die9o (dhadis), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Geir in Williamsburg = a hilarous image!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Hot Hot Heat just sound like a tamer At The Drive In (who i kinda liked) to me - shame

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:40 (twenty-three years ago)

TS: Williamsburg hipsters vs. Norwegian hipsters

hey d!390, I don't think you actually stuck around long enough on Saturday to see people dance to "What A Fool Believes" by the Doobie Brothers. The moment was "magical," as they say.

hstencil, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha, I listened to some ATDI last night and it was awesome (I know how much they're hated round here...).

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:45 (twenty-three years ago)

The Vines are hopeless.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)

The White Stripes are so much better than either band, Geir, that it's not even funny. I don't even get your dislike of them; even songs like "We're Going To Be Friends" get yr goat?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Hot Hot Heat: New Rock Revolution::The Bluetones: Britpop

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Hot Hot Heat actually sound like a cross between the Wannadies and Supergrass, although Bandages is growing on me through its sheer ubiquity.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I quite like the Hot Hot Heat, but as a live act, they were completely inconsequential. Granted, I was drunk off my ass and behaving like more a deplorably boorish sonofabitch than usual, but whatever. I quite like the oft-cited "New Wavesque" quality of their music (all quirked-out angles and high-piped, squealy vocals, citations of Joe Jackson, the Cure, XTC, etc.) but I'm not convinced they're going to set the world on fire.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 13:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not sure I entirely understand pitting Hot Hot Heat and The Vines against The Strokes and The White Stripes. Granted, I've not heard The Vines (I don't think) -- but it seems like HHH has more in common with The Strokes than The White Stripes do. After all, both are fundamentally pop bands. Maybe what I'm saying is, I understand why Geir doesn't like the Stripes (neither do I), but I don't get why he doesn't like the Strokes.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

too few chords

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 14:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha, I listened to some ATDI last night and it was awesome (I know how much they're hated round here...).

I've started to kinda like them, long after the fact.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I preferred ATDI to The Strokes, Vines, Stripes and Hot Hot Heat, now you come to mention in.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

HHH = prog = good

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

He doesn't look that prog to me

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I understand why Geir doesn't like the Stripes (neither do I)

At some point I'm going to figure out why I really really don't like the White Stripes now. It will have nothing to do with how melodic they are or aren't, but will probably have a lot to do with the fact that putting a lot of different things in one place does not in fact automatically equate to a perfect synthesis every time -- for all the wish fulfillment to the contrary.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

The GEIRBOT 2000 spits out Hot Hot Heat.... classic.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Perhaps HHH is holding down rhythym and melody as well?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I've concluded Hot Hot Heat are really shit after hearing their album. I concluded The Vines were shit after seeing them live (though the new single is good?). The White Stripes shit all over both from a very very high height and only a numpty like Geir would think otherwise.

Calum, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 15:28 (twenty-three years ago)

All that makes Hot Hot Heat stand out from the plethora of mediocre rock bands out there are their craptastic vocals.

xnelio (xnelio), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

hopefully it is Vines and Hot Hot Heat rather than The Strokes and White Stripes that will define the following years' rock music

this is the absolute inverse of my tastes.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I hope rock music will be defined by spatulas and slide rules.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 21:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Hot Hot Heat seems to know a thing or two about songs, which is what counts. White Stripes couldn't care less about songs, and only make noise. That just doesn't make sense. Rock now needs to get completely rid of its blues roots. And I mean all of them!

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Geir, I think some of your theories are interesting in a taking sides kind of way, but saying that the White Stripes don't have songs makes no sense. I mean they obviously do, even if some of them are noisy. How exactly does one of their less noisy outings like "We Are Going to Be Friends" violate your rules of music?

(feeling myself being sucked in)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 23:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Get out now, while you can.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

What a stupid statement. Didn't you say you liked the Beatles?

David Allen, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 23:43 (twenty-three years ago)

The Beatles would have been just as great without those blues roots. I mean, exactly how much blues is there in "Here There And Everywhere"?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 23:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably about the same amount as there is in "We're Going To Be Friends".

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 23:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I would just like to add "Yeah!" in a really annoying voice to Ally's statement.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 00:02 (twenty-three years ago)

ILX is as lame as all the stupid kids I see wearing plugs and black hair dye three years too late.

Goodbye!

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 00:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I would just like to add "...cruel world!" in a really mocking voice to Jon's statement.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 00:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I wasn't ashamed to like Hot Hot Heat until now.

Nick Mirov (nick), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 00:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Strokes write the best melodies ever because they're the best band ever.

Adam A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 00:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Hot Hot Heat seems to know a thing or two about songs, which is what counts

Huh? Their songs aren't any good.

xnelio (xnelio), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)

They weren't any good live either. I left the show and missed Deerhoof to escape them.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 00:33 (twenty-three years ago)

DOESN'T ANYONE ELSE REMEMBER SKA????????

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 00:34 (twenty-three years ago)

ohmyfuckinggod, that singer's yelp makes me want to do very nasty things to innocent humans.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 01:47 (twenty-three years ago)

It makes me feel like I'm in rushhour traffic

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 02:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Huh? Their songs aren't any good.

Good enough. And they are at least songs, not excuses for songs like White Stripes' way too blues influenced ones are.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 08:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Geir, you don't have any thoughts. The blues are all that matters.
See, your sweeping condemnations are rubbing off.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 12:19 (twenty-three years ago)

How does the singer in HHH also have time to hold down a job as an actor in Holyoaks (as the irksome younger brother of the gardner who is not boning Jody [who has recently gone goth])? He is so punchable.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 12:31 (twenty-three years ago)

He is so punchable.

Truest thing on this thread so far.....and I like HHH.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Huh? Their songs aren't any good.

Good enough. And they are at least songs, not excuses for songs like White Stripes' way too blues influenced ones are.

-- Geir Hongro (geirhon...), April 30th, 2003.

I'm sorry, but I can't let this slip by. Apologies if i sound obnoxious but just what the fuck good is music that is merely "good enough"?

There are plenty of generic indie bands out there now that can write songs that are actually GOOD. I mean, if good songs are all that matters, there's a plethora modern indie bands that fit the bill better than Hot Hot Heat.
