Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Tuesday, 23 February 2016 01:02 (eight years ago) link

three weeks pass...

New song: http://www.stereogum.com/1865793/mew-count-to-ten-stereogum-premiere/mp3s/

Apparenty, it's from some sort of Transformers-themed compilation. I like the song a lot, though.

New Mew : )

ten months pass...

"We have some exciting news for you.
We're releasing a new album called 'VISUALS' on April 28th."

StanM, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 09:43 (seven years ago) link

"Carry me to Safety" is grand, also the first time in recent memory a band has released the closing song first

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 11:12 (seven years ago) link

Cool track, yeah.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 12:10 (seven years ago) link

Parts of it remind me of a 70s prog track, I think. Maybe something by Yes?

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 12:55 (seven years ago) link

Kites is still my favourite thing by them.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 13:21 (seven years ago) link

Looking forward to new album.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 13:38 (seven years ago) link

I can kinda hear Ripple-era Genesis I guess, It has much more in common with a 21st Century Proggy band like North Atlantic Oscillation, to my ear at least.

MaresNest, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:17 (seven years ago) link

The Genesis comparison makes sense and I haven't heard NAO but the point is probably accurate.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Friday, 27 January 2017 22:48 (seven years ago) link

This has nothing to do with music, but I sing the frontsinger has moved in close to where I live. I see him all the time on the street. Or someone who looks like him. He did get a lot of lookalikes after they broke through fifteen years ago.

Frederik B, Saturday, 28 January 2017 00:04 (seven years ago) link

The melody of the single reminds me of "chinaberry tree"

calstars, Saturday, 28 January 2017 23:26 (seven years ago) link

They're going to do two dates with the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra, apparently: http://www.copenhagenphil.dk/koncerter/2017/2/9/60-minutes-of-mew

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Wednesday, 8 February 2017 15:20 (seven years ago) link

Oh, lol, that's probably why I've run into the lead singer. I live right by that place.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 8 February 2017 16:35 (seven years ago) link

Tape it for us? :)

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Wednesday, 8 February 2017 17:07 (seven years ago) link

Can't tomorrow :) But they sometimes record it for radio (it's the former radio-hall, made for the purpose) I'll keep you posted.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 8 February 2017 18:29 (seven years ago) link

"85 Videos" now kicking around

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 16 February 2017 17:52 (seven years ago) link

Yeah it's pretty good

calstars, Friday, 17 February 2017 01:48 (seven years ago) link

I'm into both of the new songs. There are a bunch of videos from the Copenhagen Orchestra thing on these channels
http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGH80tzOa6u8Sbg4WvfgfPw
http://www.youtube.com/user/pimwalun?feature=related

I'll be digging into these as well as emo noms this weekend.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Saturday, 18 February 2017 14:16 (seven years ago) link

Bjerre sounds really good here and here.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Saturday, 18 February 2017 15:59 (seven years ago) link

Video of "Rows", high notes around 5:55. He's not always dead-on but still p impressive.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Saturday, 18 February 2017 16:05 (seven years ago) link

one month passes...

Pre ordered

calstars, Monday, 3 April 2017 19:29 (seven years ago) link

two weeks pass...

a few songs into the new one and it sounds really fucking good

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Saturday, 22 April 2017 16:33 (seven years ago) link

How does it compare to the last couple?

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Saturday, 22 April 2017 16:45 (seven years ago) link

it's a lot weirder than +/- for sure - "candy pieces all smeared out" for instance sounds somehow both glammy and mathy? on the surface it sounds more "pop" than usual but a lot of the individual tunes are really knotty. lots of sax!

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Saturday, 22 April 2017 17:02 (seven years ago) link

That's enticing, actually (depending on what 'pop' means, ha). I feel like they basically achieved perfection on Kites/Stories and were treading water on +/- (which is still enjoyable) so I'm happy to hear that they're mixing things up.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Saturday, 22 April 2017 17:21 (seven years ago) link

don't take anything I say too seriously of course, it always takes me a few listens to sort their records out

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Saturday, 22 April 2017 17:43 (seven years ago) link

For me they are best consumed over time, maybe a track a week. The songs are thick and knotty (that's a good term) and they take some listens ...

calstars, Saturday, 22 April 2017 17:54 (seven years ago) link

Ha, when a Mew album comes out, I binge on it for days.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Sunday, 23 April 2017 02:15 (seven years ago) link

"candy pieces" is incredible

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 28 April 2017 17:38 (seven years ago) link

on the surface it sounds more "pop" than usual but a lot of the individual tunes are really knotty.

this feels correct. it's strange that it can feel so straightforward until you really apply your attention to it

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 28 April 2017 17:38 (seven years ago) link

It's gonna take me at least a week to process this album!

calstars, Friday, 28 April 2017 17:41 (seven years ago) link

"in a better place" knocked me out

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 28 April 2017 17:43 (seven years ago) link

haven't sorted "ay ay ay" or "learn our crystals" yet but I p much love the rest

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 28 April 2017 18:28 (seven years ago) link

after one listen I'm not sure about this one at all...+- seems by far the superior album

but I'll give it a few chances. opening track is a screamer at least (and as with Frengers, it's so good you sort of ignore any mediocrity elsewhere)

imago, Friday, 28 April 2017 19:10 (seven years ago) link

doesn't help that it's mastered to remove your ears

imago, Friday, 28 April 2017 19:12 (seven years ago) link

& I usually dgaf about that. but this is that rare occasion when dgaf autocorrects to deaf

imago, Friday, 28 April 2017 19:13 (seven years ago) link

it has maybe less obvious standouts than +/- but felt about equal in overall quality. looking forward to spending more time with it

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 28 April 2017 19:20 (seven years ago) link

er fewer obvious standouts*

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 28 April 2017 19:20 (seven years ago) link

Looking forward to this, has the line-up change noticeable?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 28 April 2017 20:55 (seven years ago) link

"Candy" is nice...

calstars, Friday, 28 April 2017 22:39 (seven years ago) link

But I tuned out soon after. It's so dense

calstars, Friday, 28 April 2017 22:46 (seven years ago) link

is the second track's beat deliberately making me think of Bowie's Modern Love or am I imagining things?

StanM, Saturday, 29 April 2017 16:01 (seven years ago) link

I'm really enjoying this (and binging, via Spotify so far, as predicted). I think it's probably better than +/-. "Candy" is def a highlight of the songs that had not been released ahead of time.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Saturday, 29 April 2017 17:08 (seven years ago) link

I can see how you could think of "Modern Love". Based on a quick scan, this is an attempt at a v approximate transcription of the main bass/snare patterns in the two songs, where ">" indicates a snare hit. They move at roughly similar tempi. The Mew drummer varies the beat throughout the song, though, and sometimes gets a little closer to the Bowie beat. In the outro, the second bar just becomes quarters.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Saturday, 29 April 2017 18:07 (seven years ago) link

wow, thank you for that!

StanM, Saturday, 29 April 2017 18:27 (seven years ago) link

Video for "In a Better Place". Also, I swear this Youtube stream sounds better than the 'mastered for iTunes' version I bought. The drums seem pretty squashed on mine. Did anyone get the CD or LP?

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Friday, 12 May 2017 12:36 (seven years ago) link

doesn't help that it's mastered to remove your ears

Seriously, does anyone who listens to Scandinavian indie-prog actually want this?
