he's great isn't he ?

the lp's full of good songs.
people are saying 'shoegazey'.
maybe that's why i like it so much.

... hate to see a thread die.

Someone tell me more about this Mew. "Comforting Sounds" is all grandiose gorgeousness. LP is not in any non-online store I frequent. Worth the download? Previous album any good?

I really like the singles Am I Wry? No and especially She Came Home For Christmas, but I haven't heard the album yet. I would want to though.

Just picked up the album used the other day...it's called Frengers. It's actually a band from Denmark, not a guy, so far as I can tell. I'm still not sure what to think of it yet; the background music on the website led me to think that it was going to be a bit more spacey and moody, but it's instead pretty competent modern rock that's obviously tipping its hat a bit to things like MBV, Radiohead and maybe Sigur Ros, without really sounding overly like any of them. I like it...don't love it yet but who knows what repeated listens will do here.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 24 April 2003 18:53 (twenty years ago) link

Just back from Denmark and picked it up over there after seeing a gushing review. I've only had one listen and as was said upthread its pretty good modern rock although the MBV influence wasn't as apparent as I thought it was going to be.

Anybody heard other Danish bands whose albums I didn't get the chance to find - Kitty Wu and Moi Caprice?

mms (mms), Friday, 25 April 2003 10:08 (twenty years ago) link

Actually, I've just heard it and it's pretty great. However, it seems that there was a Danish-only album released a while back containing some of the same songs and some not on this Frengers that are miles better than some of the ones that are. "Saliva" is great - why not on the English release?

Anyway. It's what I wanted Sigur Ros to sound like. Lots of great ridiculous singing, very obvious attention to detail, songs that start out differently to their beginning (Am I Wry? No in particular gets props for having all three) and not really that shoegaze-y at all.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 25 April 2003 10:13 (twenty years ago) link

It seems they had 2 albums released in DK prior to Frengers, there's a decent discography here:

Possibly my favourite album of the last 5 years. I think they made it especially for me. I hope they come to North America as I'd really like to see them live. Yeah, not shoegaze-y at all really, except maybe in a superficial way. One reviewer described them as a "more indie Sigur Ros", whatever that means. Perhaps they'll be wearing trucker hats by the time they get here!

Curses, nothing coming up my end. It strikes me that a few years down the track, I prefer the original Danish-only versions of most of the Frengers songs, except "156" and "She Came Home For Christmas", and the ideal would be a mix of both.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 5 September 2005 23:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, I did at least find a nice 2002 radio session on slsk that I'd not heard. Oh well. Look forward, look forward. Care to share the userid of someone who has it piscesboy?

Following my post on the main board yesterday, I coincidentally picked up a promo of it in Mr CD (London) yesterday for 4 quid (They had a couple more copies in if anyone's interested).

Had a quick listen last night and off 1st go it sounds magic - More proggy sounding than Frengers but with some genius hooks and top quality songs in there - Very impressed

actionjackson, Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:41 (eighteen years ago) link

MORE PROG! YES YES YES YES. Less shoegaze, MORE PROG would improve every band, even an already good one. Do you like some of their ridiculous, over-the-top things like "I Should Have Been a Tsin-Tsi"?

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:50 (eighteen years ago) link

What's this about original Danish versions? Any time I've looked in DK for their stuff it's just the standard international version of Frengers. I bought my copy there and certainly don't think it's any different from the one you can buy in the UK.

mms (mms), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:54 (eighteen years ago) link

There are two Danish-only albums, from which some (but not all) of the Frengers songs originally came.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 8 September 2005 10:12 (eighteen years ago) link

"A triumf for man" and "Half the world is wathing me" was only made in Denmark in a very small number. Both of the CD´s are very rare, and therefor very expensive. Most of the numbers on "HTWIWM" are also on "Frengers". I´ve just bought "HTWIWM"....the price was 150dollars :)

Daniel Nielsen, Friday, 16 September 2005 10:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Hi, I bought the new album. (I'm danish)
And all I can say about it is, that it's great.. You simply have to listen to it. The more I listen to it, the more I realise that this is better than anything they've ever made.
Be warned though, even though this is a great record (possibly the best I've ever heard), it needs attention. You wont think it's amazing the first time you listen to it.. And for gods sake (at least the first few times you listen) listen to the album fully, and don't just skip to the songs that you love and have heard before. Most of the songs sound weird on their own, it's supposed to be heard in full..

Anyway, buy it!

I'm completely in love with ...And The Glass Handed Kites. Once again it seems like an album specifically created for me with proggy bits, indie-ish bits, complicated vocal arrangements, great hooks, J Mascis' gruff voice against Jonas' sounding strange at first and wonderful later, an almost complete lack of embarrassing bits, and some of the most lush synth sounds I've heard in a long time. That they pay homage to Wind & Wuthering-era Genesis with "Saviours of Jazz Ballet" is great, too. I'm kinda glad no one on Pitchfork or AMG have reviewed it. Still no North American release for it yet, nor an explanation of why not. Stupid.

Ok, can anyone give me a reason not to take a flyer on this album for 9 bucks now that it's out in the states? It sounds really silly but kind of great, like when the proggy bits happen it's almost by accident. I feel like it's the kind of album I'll buy and never discuss with anyone I know.

Sean Braud1s (Sean Braudis), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 14:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Buy it.

Because I have a car and lots of my friends don't, I often make them listen to ...And The Glass-Handed Kites when driving. They usually like it a lot but then never ask about it later. This mostly pleases me. It's now had a Pitchfork review (thanks, Nitsuh) but I bet it still won't make a dent. This also pleases me. Very personal music.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 10 August 2006 04:18 (seventeen years ago) link

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 10 August 2006 06:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Hey, the Pitchfork review is the reason I know about it so they're still good for something.

I took the plunge at lunch yesterday and listened to the first half on the way to work this morning. I'm pretty impressed, there's some damn decent ensemble playing in those songs. I also love the sort of metallic post-punk guitar tones, keyboards doubling vocal melodies, and smooth segues from song to song. The whole affair is still kind of silly, but if it makes me rock out on the bus at 8 am it's probably doing a couple of things right. It's the kind of derivative but really solid and agenda-free music I try hard to root for.

Yeah, the band doesn't really do it for me, but to each his own. It may be a mistaken impression, but I feel like these guys are only a step or two away from singing about Dungeons & Dragons or Dr. Who. Which, truth be told, are two things I've enjoyed at one time or another. But still, singing about it is something else altogether.

i think this record's moments of bombast have the exact level of bombast for me to enjoy it. not too understated/ironic yet not too over-the-top.

there's a thousand other reasons why i like it so much, but the perfectly-pitched bombast is what i keep noticing (predictably, i guess).

No More Stories/Are Told Today/I'm Sorry/They Washed Away//No More Stories/The World Is Grey/I'm Tired/Let's Wash Away is the upcoming fifth studio album by the Danish band Mew. It will be released in Scandinavia on August 19, the UK on August 24, and the United States on August 25. It will also be available for digital purchase on August 17.

According to Jonas Bjerre, this album will be happier, "dancier", and more upbeat than its predecessor, And the Glass Handed Kites, which had a dark theme of fear.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Saturday, 29 April 2017 17:08 (six years ago) link

I can see how you could think of "Modern Love". Based on a quick scan, this is an attempt at a v approximate transcription of the main bass/snare patterns in the two songs, where ">" indicates a snare hit. They move at roughly similar tempi. The Mew drummer varies the beat throughout the song, though, and sometimes gets a little closer to the Bowie beat. In the outro, the second bar just becomes quarters.

On my CD version of Visuals I didn't notice any compression problems, it sounds wonderful.

Was thinking this that is where they take a slight step down but I'm not sure. Perhaps on a par with Frengers but not as good as Kites, Stories and +/-?
It's a lot subtler, I was worried about the poppiness taking over too much but perhaps I needn't have, although I do miss some of the dynamism that only really takes center stage on track 3 on this album.

"I am a quiet light chaser

aint I painful?

Saw them play all of Frengers live a few weeks back in front of an absolutely adoring Danish audience. That album is like 'Funeral' or 'Turn On the Bright Lights' for us. It dips in the middle though, but they played a few hits before they got to the main event, which meant they played five songs that went Special, Zookeepers Boy, Am I Wry, 156, Snow Brigade. That was pretty good!
