Is there a better album this year? Has this guy been reading my mind? Has he made this record just for me? Last night between 6.51pm and 7.30pm I was squirming and smiling and occasionally lauching and jerking and twitching round the music room while this gorgeous stuff clattered and oozed and weedled and bounced out of my speakers, and it was GOOD. Damn, I only bought his first album 'cos Amazon recommended it to me 'cos I'd rated Four Tet highly, and I was way underwhelemed with Start Breaking My Heart... But now THIS! This futurepsychenoisebeatpop! Oh yesyesyes! It's like My Bloody Valentine and The Chemical Brothers and Four Tet fucking in heaven while Brian Wilson watches! Yesyesyesyes!

Expect some Joycean rambling on Stylus early next week, if not before.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 06:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was absolutely fucking blown awat, buddy, sending text messages to mates imploring them to buy it and stuff. I've not had a first reaction to a record like this since I was 17 and heard In Sides.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 06:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

OK, you've sold me, I want to hear this. I seem to recall their record company bloke drunkenly chatting to us in the ICA bar, or did I imagine this? Suzy do you still have that record? I remember not being too impressed by the description at the time, but my curiosity is piqued now. Twee shoegazer electronica, could be worthy...

kate, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 06:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nothing twee about it! It's rocking and noisy and direct and spacey and great!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 07:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

I only like electronica when it's really spacerock. Will I like this? The last electronica album I liked was the progrock majesty that is Capitol K. Same sort of ballpark?

kate, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 07:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't know Capital K, I'm afraid. Um... This is definitely less elecronica then you might imagine, it's not spacerock or noisepop either, or dance music. It's just really, really great and cool and noisy and dancey and there are guitars and organs and little delicate glockenspiels and BIG NOISES and BIGGER BASS DRUMS and some honking clarinet and saxophone and a frog and some woozey vox on a couple of tracks and stuff.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 07:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Pisses all over Capitol K from a great height after 10 pints of lager.

It is a peach of an album, it really is, bloody marvellous.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 07:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, Chris, way to sell the album. I say "I really love X, is it like X?" and you say "It pisses all over X" - yeah, that REALLY makes me likely to wanna give it a chance.

What I like about Capitol K is big PROG ROCK guitar riffs mixed with galloping stuttering dance beatz and occasional passages of gentle shoegazer beauty. If I like that, am I likely to like Manitoba?

kate, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 07:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes. Only more so.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 07:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sorry Kate, it's just that they were so bad last week that I can't even imagine anyone liking them much, apart from their Mums.

The Manitoba album is everything that Nick says, it's got swirly guitars, great drums, fantastic drums, some really good frog noises, there's definitely a sennse of humour in there but it bnever descends to the pits of wacky, it's just great.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 07:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

great drums AND fantastic drums? Sold!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 07:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

exactly, that was intentional you know.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 07:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

Are the frog noises, like, when frogs are talking, or doing other noisy frog stuff?

David A. (Davant), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 08:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

I dunno, but one of my favourite records EVER (Medicine's Shot Forth Self Living) features a duet for guitar feedback and frog chirps, so I am hopeful!

kate, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 08:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

The frogs simply ribbit

chris (chris), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 08:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

A New Order "Perfect Kiss" kind of ribbit?

[okay, I'm belabouring this, I know -- some things are just funny, intrinsically so, like frogs and chickens]

David A. (Davant), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 08:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah, that's the one.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 08:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

Indeed. Well, I think it's track two, and at the start, a frog ribbits. And at the end, it ribbits once again. And it's like doorbells or mobile phone interference in dub (Primal Scream and The Orb, specifically) in that it kind of throws your head 90 degrees as yo wonder whether it was real or not. It's very cool.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 08:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

Really want to get this but am hamstung by wary thriftiness at the moment. I finish work in three hours, pass Music Zone on my way to the station, it's just a tenner - if further enthusiasm is presented to the extent that I can no longer resist and it proves to be as fantastic as suggested, will be forever in your debt. By 4.45, plz, thankyouforyourtime.

Three tracks in and I hear MBV guitar fuzz and Spiritualized drones and baa baa baa harmonies and free jazz wibbling and, yes, frog noises. Kate, you'll love it.

It's okay, but...

Oh well.

I've got real frogs outside my bedroom winddow and they make all the frog noises I need. Plus you can pick them up and pet them and they're not even that slimey.

Ned, the last track sounds soooooo much like Loveless you have to hear it just for that.

It was said on another thread but Fantasma is another reference point.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 13:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

I got this yesterday and yes it's rather impressive, quite a leap from other stuff by Manitoba I've heard (those tracks were at least recognisably electronica; this, while being categorised and promoted as 'dance'/'electronica', sounds much more 'rock' to me).

One obvious ref. point = Spiritualized, if Jason had spent his advance on a computer and software rather than drugs and hundreds of session musicians. (Manitoba's got those very droney chords that last exactly one bar and then modulate, just like Spiritualized do). But there are lots of Beatles-y and Byrds-y harmonies in there too. Plus those drums! In short, another genre-busting Leaf label release.

Slight quibble on first listen - some of the tracks are too short! There are lots of ideas and grooves that could have been developed further.

While I'm posting again, the Hot Hot Heat LP is also recommended, albeit for different reasons.

zebedee, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 15:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've never even heard Spiritualized, so my opinions may not be well-informed.

Oh well, I'm off to see is there any frog spawn yet.

Buy the first one instead, if you've not got it. (There was a much better 2nd Manitoba album made by a band called Glifted which is really good.) Alright, alright. I've not heard the new album but I didn't much like the epee. The first elpee is brilliant though. The kind of boring-as-fuck electronica that gives electronica a bad name.

Re the Capitol K stuff - They were fucking awful last week supporting Manitoba, for some reason he seems to have gone down the sleazenation/bad haircut electro nonsense route rather then the lovely guitar/beats stuff that he's been doing in the past - Seen him 4-5 times over the last few years and he's always been fantastic - Until then.
Hope he sorts it out before the album.

Manitoba on the other hand were something else, can't wait to see them again soon.

It's okay, but...

Hm. That's where I am so far on this so far. So, uh, beats with semi-psychedelic pop rock grooves. It's nice. Nice. But considering all of the praise upthread I am, so far, feeling let down. I was expecting MBV or Spiritualized kinda stuff and instead I'm hearing more...oh, Soup Dragons or Kula Shaker. I'm only on track three so far though, so maybe something will change, or maybe repeated listenings will bring out its charms.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 3 April 2003 17:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 3 April 2003 22:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

I only just listened to it myself, and it warms my grouchy little drone rock heart. The album it's closest to in sound is Spacemen 3's Recurring - the reverse-reverb vocals, two-chords into infinity, tinkle tinkle guitar melodies over some musical horn/keyboard splats, even a brief piece of guitars over handclapping.

It's not the electro-shoegaze verison of Smile, but it's worth checking out. Better than a lot of the crap I've heard lately.

Sean -- This seems like the kind of record where first impressions are definitive. I don't think of it as a "grower." So if you're still underwhelmed, it might not do it for you. Weird to read Spiritualized comparisons, I don't really get that. But then I really dislike Spiritualized.

This sounds like the warm headache and the swirly feeling you get in your stomach just before you vomit.

You've eaten too much pink candy floss and been on the whirly spinney things at the fair and that's okay because those whirly spinning things could only make a complete pussy throw up but now it's your headache and your swirly feeling and your candy floss puke on the pavement and you're the pussy and the floor's still spinning and will it ever stop?

This sounds like the BEST MUSIC EVAH!!! I love candy floss! I love the whirly spinny thing! I always throw up, but the sensation of eating candy floss and whirling is so great that it's worth it!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 June 2003 14:28 (twenty years ago) link

I'm going to go home tonight and dig it out and give it another listen. But it's got that shoegazer atmospherics combined with pretty vocal harmonies and dance beats (though it's more baggy/techno crossover than it is IDM or anything like that). I have no idea how hard it would be to get hold of now, though. It bombed at the time, and it's passed way beyond used bin status.

kate (kate), Thursday, 19 June 2003 14:31 (twenty years ago) link

Nah, not really worth tracking down, but if you see it and its reasonably priced give it a shot. A 2 Disc version with several remixes exists as well. I like the Manitoba album better since its got more Mercury Rev and Sp3 in it. Otherwise the resemblence is striking.

Re: up my ass

I just re-read my review & I stand by it completely. I think I did a pretty good job explaining why the record works & who might like it. What were you expecting after reading my review?

I do think that some of the interest in the Manitoba record, at least from people who liked his first album a lot, is that he went in such a completely different direction. At a time when a lot of people are wondering if IDM has reached a cul de sac, he decided to abandon it for retro pop. If you don't care about electronic music or what Snaith did earlier, the record might have just a little less punch.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 19 June 2003 15:49 (twenty years ago) link

Ned, have you heard it yet?

Nope -- symptomatic of the whole feeling I've got towards listening to music a lot these days, please refer to my various posts on the 'top singles of 2003' thread for more. In this case though, rather than not being all that excited over constant new thrills, I feel dulled by all the Beach Boys/Chapterhouse/Chemicals invocations and can't be bothered to care more. I do again note your comment about sounding like Loveless on its final song but jeez, I've heard enough that wants to sound like Loveless over time after all...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 June 2003 16:03 (twenty years ago) link

(But to add to other matters, Blood Music is rather good, as is Whirlpool and Rownderbowt. ;-))

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 June 2003 16:05 (twenty years ago) link

well put, mark.
after having the record a while (i was drooling over it at first) i must say it gets a touch dull; but his older stuff still gets it up for me.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 19 June 2003 16:11 (twenty years ago) link

Hey Mark,

Your review is accurate, I agree, and many people have been praising Up In Flames, so to blame you specifically was a bit harsh. However, I do stand by the claim that if an act like Beulah was to have made this same album, there is little chance it would have garnered an 8.6. Bands shouldn't be given bonus points just for changing their style or doing something unexpected.

I listen to mountains of indie and electronica, but this album just doesn't turn my crank much. For me, it's too much of a rambling mess. I'll take something like that Digital Jockey album anyday over this. I think it's OK, but not fantastic like many people have asserted.

blutroniq (blutroniq), Thursday, 19 June 2003 18:19 (twenty years ago) link

Also,

Recipe for 'Seething Cozen': just add Four Tet's 'Rounds'.

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 19 June 2003 18:24 (twenty years ago) link

i listened to this record twice after hearing so much praise about it and there is absolutely nothing special about it at all. I am left wondering what it is that is exciting people. Domino has put out so much other great music (hood, pram) recently, I'm really bewildered by this (and the james yorkston record too, which similarly got a lot of raves but is staggeringly bland).

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 19 June 2003 19:21 (twenty years ago) link

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 20 June 2003 08:33 (twenty years ago) link

I know it's totally illogical but Four Tet manage to irritate me hugely just because of their name. I'm deliberately not going to liosten to them just because of it.

In case any of you aren't in the know, Manitoba is the name of the lamest province in Canada, and home to Winnipeg, the lamest city in Canada. So a Canadian naming their act Manitoba is akin to an American naming their act err... Iowa or maybe Wyoming.
