The Orb on Kompakt???

Just found out that, apparently, Alex Patterson in collaboration with Thomas Fehlmann released an EP called "Kompassion" in January on Kompakt. Has anyone heard this? Is it any good?

Good reinvention of the Orb on that EP. The Thomas Fehlmann album 'Streets of Blah' travels a bit further down the Kompakt road. Some of the best work they've done in ages.

only a matter of time i guess. the orb was already featured on pop ambient 2003 right? kompakt has sort of redefined that early 90s ambient house stuff as early 00s cool.

what IS the new record like?

Bicycles and Tricyles is unfortunately free of Kompakt-ness, besides the tracks that were originally on the Kompassion 12". The upcoming Komplott 12" should be interesting though.

I'm vindicated!

new album "the dream" ?

stumbled across and then lost details about it but appears rather back-to-old school vibe, artwork, collaborators about it? could be good or bad, unsure whether they're listing ricardo villalobos as influences... suspect it's not on kompakt.

wow, it's totally back to beyond the ultraworld, as if the last 13 years never happened - dub, funk, breaks, extended vocal samples, sparkly space fx, some junglistic bits, bit of ragga, 'ardkore'-esque piano accentuations - everything and anything but minimal.

it might be pretty good too, i can't tell yet.

i've only listened to three tracks so don't read too much into 'hey this album is good'!

The recent one, Baghdad Batteries is flimsy but fine. I found a copy of Orblivion in a s/h sop the other day and I'm listening to it now. I always loved that album but it never really got a lot of cred did it?

Orblivion did get the short stick. I think I read it was delayed for some stupid label reason and that took the wind out of the Orb sails. I think it's undervalued in the Orb catalog.

I like the Orb on Kompakt stuff but I consider it to be Fehlmann material and mentally catagorize it as such. Don't listen to it when I want to hear the Orb but when I want some Fehlmann, it's one I pull out.

^^ exactly. this is a Felhmann album in all but name. and there are some lovely moments on it.

millmeister, Thursday, 1 November 2012 18:23 (6 months ago) Permalink

same with Baghdad Batteries. Are any Fehlmann solo albums as good as Okie Dokie? Because that's a stormer.

frogbs, Thursday, 1 November 2012 18:28 (6 months ago) Permalink

'Visions of Blah' is meant to be a good'un (also on Kompakt). But haven't heard it for years.

millmeister, Thursday, 1 November 2012 18:35 (6 months ago) Permalink

Yeah, Visions of Blah is good. Gute Luft is good also if a bit spotty, 'Schwerelos' on there is really classic Fehlmann.
