Wonderful music throughout entire career, although his very best work was with Genesis.
― Geir Hongro, Monday, 20 August 2007 10:56 (eighteen years ago)
"Humdrum" live from the Plays Live thing is flipping me out of my skull right now. JESUS.
― Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 5 July 2008 03:51 (seventeen years ago)

― Surmounter, Saturday, 5 July 2008 16:48 (seventeen years ago)
his closing song from WALL-E is kind of amazing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTQD0weUTF8
― pshrbrn, Saturday, 5 July 2008 17:59 (seventeen years ago)
haha totally OTM, i loved the closing song from WALL•E when i saw it last week!
― stephen, Saturday, 5 July 2008 20:44 (seventeen years ago)
you haven't heard 'don't give up' and you call yourself a kate bush fan?
― akm, Saturday, 5 July 2008 21:40 (seventeen years ago)
anyway that wall-e song is good, but the big blue ball album is awful as i expected, except for natacha atlas' take on 'habibe'
LOL Tell it like it is!!!!
― Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Sunday, 6 July 2008 06:09 (seventeen years ago)
I am v. jealous of anybody who hasn't heard "don't give up"
― J0hn D., Sunday, 6 July 2008 20:06 (seventeen years ago)
I agree.
― Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Monday, 7 July 2008 00:53 (seventeen years ago)
i think john meant that differently than you do
― akm, Monday, 7 July 2008 01:10 (seventeen years ago)
Oh really? Look I don't care if Surmounter has heard it or not. It's a great song and I'd like to think Surmounter might listen to it if he hasn't already. End of story.
― Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Monday, 7 July 2008 01:43 (seventeen years ago)
akm otm, I am jealous of them because their suffering is lesser than mine
OTOH as a Catholic I guess I could always lord it over them: "nyah nyah, I have suffered through 'don't give up' innumerable times, I know Jesus is gonna pay me back for this shit big time"
― J0hn D., Monday, 7 July 2008 02:49 (seventeen years ago)
see what I did there
i thought you were expressing disdain in the same way I may be jealous of anyone who has never heard, say, Ugly Kid Joe, but I shoulda known better

there are so many songs in this life
― Surmounter, Monday, 7 July 2008 13:31 (seventeen years ago)
An underrated ballad I'd love to hear this a.m.: "Wallflower."
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 7 July 2008 13:47 (seventeen years ago)
and here's Dave Matthews with his version of Gabriel's workhorse: violinist Boyd Tinsley sawed at his instrument as if he was trying to start a fire.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 7 July 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)
Haha! OMG, I can't imagine him/them doing that song. Priceless.
Last night I realized I had the entire "Car" Gabriel album on my computer without realizing it. I was delighted to just be able to add it to my iPod right away. The studio version of "Humdrum" does indeed have a different sound to it, but I love it just as much as the live version.
Also, yes "Wallflower" never gets enough love.
― Bimble, Monday, 7 July 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)
i used to love that song but find it kind of maudlin now

― rogermexico., Monday, 7 July 2008 21:53 (seventeen years ago)
I used to love "Biko" but now I find it kind of overwrought. I mean, it's sad and all what happened but fairlight bagpipes? Really?
― rogermexico., Monday, 7 July 2008 21:55 (seventeen years ago)
Bahaha. I love how there's TWO threads on ILX called "Peter Gabriel". Classic.
Listen, how the fuck can you criticize the bagpipes on Biko?!? Get one life.
― Bimble, Saturday, 12 July 2008 06:18 (seventeen years ago)
Bimble are you drunk?
(I am!)
― stephen, Saturday, 12 July 2008 06:35 (seventeen years ago)
I love how there's TWO threads on ILX called "Peter Gabriel".
Yes, but I predict the third eponymous Peter Gabriel thread will be the best.
― kenan, Saturday, 12 July 2008 06:57 (seventeen years ago)
That's not a fair question, Stephen.
*hint* I'm probably going to the store soon.
I am not officially "drunk".
― Bimble, Saturday, 12 July 2008 06:59 (seventeen years ago)
WINNAR
Bimble i just got back from "the store". awesome.
― stephen, Saturday, 12 July 2008 07:01 (seventeen years ago)
Hell, that's great, Stephen.
I only came back to this thread to announce that there is no way I can imagine pulling anything out of my iPod as good as "That Voice Again" tonight on my iPod. I feel like I better give up, now. I fear this is the pinnacle of the night. Bittersweet.
― Bimble, Saturday, 12 July 2008 08:10 (seventeen years ago)
I mean all night I am going to try to carve something out of the deepest recesses of my iPod as good as that, and hell. Give up.
― Bimble, Saturday, 12 July 2008 08:11 (seventeen years ago)
Covers album is out soon and has leaked, giving it a listen now. Not sure. I love Gabriel's voice more than almost any other voice I can think of, it has so much depth and warmth, but some of the orchestrations on this are just annoying and overbearing (particularly his cover of Elbow's "Mirrorball" which itself sounded so Gabrielesque in the original). "Heroes" is very nice and "Street Spirit (fade out)" and "Flume" are good but almost too unbearably miserable to listen to...just...depressing. But I'm depressed so maybe that's effecting me.
― akm, Friday, 22 January 2010 06:03 (sixteen years ago)
I wish there wasn't such a singular sound on this album. Gabriel + orchestral backdrop is great for 5 or 6 songs. Not 12.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 22 January 2010 06:05 (sixteen years ago)
I like the ones with more piano and less orchestra, certainly. I do think that these could be some really interesting live shows. or very "professional" and old-persony shows.
― akm, Friday, 22 January 2010 06:07 (sixteen years ago)
The posters for his upcoming show here say "ORCHESTRA! NO DRUMS! NO GUITARS!" I wasn't particularly impressed.
― Euler, Friday, 22 January 2010 06:36 (sixteen years ago)
He's not going to do some of his usual older songs then I guess?

is it true that this lou reed song was written for a commercial? because it sounds like it. but damn if it isn't oddly affecting, particularly that "but mostly I dream of you a lot" line. I must be getting old.
― akm, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 07:10 (sixteen years ago)
I did a bit of googling when this came out and it looked like that to me, too - maybe for jewelery? I don't remember. I really like the cover; when I first heard it I did find myself hoping that it wasn't something like Coldplay (I didn't look at the list of artists at all), so it was something of a relief to find it was Lou Reed.
― toby, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 11:19 (sixteen years ago)

― the last airbenderizer (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 4 July 2010 17:17 (fifteen years ago)
Eno's doing the Bowie part instead, but Radiohead didn't like his cover of their song, apparently. ( http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/jun/02/peter-gabriel-scratch-my-back :
"But there have been some high-profile drop-outs: Radiohead are no longer covering Wallflower, Gabriel's 1982 song about political prisoners in Latin America, and the involvement of Arcade Fire is now, he admits, "questionable". He adds, a little mournfully, that some of the artists he approached may not have appreciated his versions of their songs. He sent a stream of his cover of Radiohead's Street Spirit (Fade Out) – an elegiac version that Gabriel describes as an "existential cry of mortality" – to Thom Yorke; the code used to access the music showed Gabriel whether the track was played. It was, but only once. "(Yorke) said he hadn't listened (to it)," Gabriel says, "but that seems very strange to me. It's pretty extreme, I guess. And I have heard since that the band didn't like what I did with it." Radiohead's record company declined to comment."
<3 this one too (Elbow are more dadrock than "our generation of indie/punk/DIY" I guess? :-) )

every artist covered by him will see a significant payday on mechanicals alone - like, a game-changing payday - if only somebody with access to PG would have encouraged him to cover some parts & lab0r and one of my jams, whiney & me could have taken you all out to dinner at Le Cirque, but no, you were all too busy posting pictures of cakes

i'm just glad someone, anyone, would think to cover "Come Talk To Me." Us doesn't get enough love, and imo it's an inspired bit of judo to replace the astonishing percussion, which can't possibly be matched head-on, with a banjo roll.

That Bon Iver is great. Then again, Vernon is one of the few brave enough to cover Talk Talk live, so there's that.

i wasn't expecting bon iver's cover to be good but was pleasantly surprised. the mercy street cover was kinda boring but at the very least it reminded me just how amazing that song is. definitely one of my favorite peter gabriel tracks.

Does anyone have any reviews/insight as to what to expect this tour?
― BlackIronPrison, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 17:26 (fifteen years ago)
It looks dull as fuck. First set with the orchestra, doing the covers album start to finish. Second set with the orchestra, doing rearranged versions of PG's song - which is to say, minus all the familiar melodies and good bits. "No drums, no guitars" is the billing. No fun.
New Blood orchestra, btw.
