what do you reckon of romanthony? i've never really heard him, but i'm surprised at the lack of attention considering his contributions to the daft punk album.

last year there was a bit of fuss about him for a while, and he played fabric, but i was a) fux0red, and b) dancing to aphex and cylob in the rephlex room, so i don't remember seeing him.

opinion?

He's allright, but also a bit overrated in certain circles (dance press, The Face and i-D). Last year's 'R.Hide in Plain Site' seems to be typical fare between Prince-like fonk (Prince influence works best on a funky track like 'Bring me down' and not so good a endless slower-than-shite ballads) and full-out tech-house, which sometimes sounds a bit like the more banging Daft Punk track or on his best track ('Floorpiece') comes close to a gentler Green Velvet. He got some other side-projects and some mix-cd's, but I haven't heard those.

I prefer Green Velvet btw. he's just a bit harder/stranger/funnier

It is amazing how many of the C or D (etc) threads are about people I've never heard of. That is not a bad thing, as far as I can see (it might, conceivably, be unfortunate for me, but that's just tough). It's just strange, the unusual and obscure things that you people are all into.

If you're only ever going to hear one Romanthony song, make sure it's Hold On, which was reissued on Thomas Bangalter's Roulé-label in 1999. Beautiful soul/house song with added preacher. I think Romanthony's potential is stillunfulfilled, I'm sure his best is yet to come. The Prince comparison is because their voices sound so alike, plus Romanthony also produces, writes songs and plays guitar. He's never had the major label push, but he could be a superstar.

Well, why strange? Let's face, nobody's born with full knowledge of music, so we're all new to something at some point! :-) So I'm not too sure about your point, Pinefox. Are you saying you don't normally get the chance to hear or investigate lesser known stuff, or...?

_R. Hide In Plain Sight_ is patchy but close to excellent at points - "Bring You Up" is a fantastic uptempo Prince homage, and some of the house tracks are very nice indeed. There's even an interesting attempt at Timbaland-style R&B at one point, though it's not particularly successful. Really though the better album to go for is his earlier compilation _Romanworld_ - which I don't actually have physically but I know most of the tracks and they're Grate. Especially "Let Me Show You Love".

At that point (92-96 basically) he was a fab exponent of second wave house (think Cajmere, Felix Da Housecat, Masters At Work at their most uptempo). But yeah, Omar's right, when it comes to personality Green Velvet just beats him into the ground.

erm, yeah 'Bring You Up' not 'Bring Me Down', also known as track 2 ;) Mmm, is there an obvious reason I got that title wrong?

But Job has a point, last year I was expecting 'Bring You Up' to be one of of those summmer hits, but somehow it didn't happen. No video? He's got the personality and the tunes.

Just picked this up yesterday in MVE for £3, and at that price I'd say it's a bargain. Why do we not hear more about Romanthony? I passed over it when it originally came out because I didn't like "Floorpiece", which is still a bit silly. Awful name, though. Roman Tony = Cheesy third generation Italian car dealer???

have none of you heard "falling from grace", "now you want me"/"make this love right", "ministry of love", "in the mix" or "the wanderer". romanthony was being bigged up by mags like update and muzik in the mid 90s as the second coming of prince and those tracks back it up to an extent. he was signed to azuli which was a decent label back then and also did some stuff for cajual. he's kind of gone off the boil since. "falling from grace" in particular is insane.

It's the system that makes you a wanderer.

LET ME SHOW YOU LOVE

Did that get re-pressed or put on some new minimal mix, or did ritchie or ricardo start playing it recently? I have heard that from a bunch of the local hipster minimal dj's lately.

Used brilliantly on Louie Vega's United DJs of America mix from way back when.

One More Time (Romanthony's Unplugged), is worth checking out. Cheesy but great. You can find it on the Daft Club comp.

Ronan, Friday, 21 September 2007 10:13 (2 years ago) Permalink

'live in the mix' would be pretty good if he didnt feel the need to remind us every three minutes that we are 'LIVE! IN THE MIXXX!! WITH DJ! ROMAN! ROMAN! ROMAN! ANTHONY!!!'
