Sugababes: Classic Or Dud?

...maybe I should be the one to open the thread?

It's too soon, really. My instincts tell me they're going to crap out. Still, though, I'm really liking the tracks I've heard. SERIOUSLY liking - it's like I'm listening to Radiohead or Ida or Ken Vandermark or something. Perhaps I'm finally wearing down that shield of hipster shit that doesn't allow me to unconditionally love anything that screams "pre-fab teeny bopper piffle". ("What a Girl Wants" excluded, of course.)

But, then, stuff like "Overload" doesn't sound like pre-fab teeny bopper piffle. That song sets the bar kind of high, but the other tracks I've heard don't embarrass themselves, either. And, there isn't an excessive media blitz taking hold of the US. Yet. There should be, though. (Of course, the last mechapop single I fell for - "The Call" - fell off the Billboard charts faster than an elephant without a parachute.)

But, yeah. So far, classic.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (11 years ago) Permalink

I never listen to things like Destiny's Child etc, but I was completely smitten by 'Overload' and I got the album, which is actually really good in a yo-sistah-why-yo-let-yo-man-treat-yo-so-bad kind of way. I think 'Overload' is certainly a classic, time will tell if they can take it any further.

Jamie, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (11 years ago) Permalink

Dud. They're riding the success of "Overload" which people claimed to like because it didn't sound like a pop group. People almost always refer to the old "but they write their own songs!" argument as a reason they like them and I find that immensely suspect, like an excuse for liking a pop band aimed at teenage girls (they are, you know?). I didn't like the way they said "...at Christmas!" on their Christmas single. But most of all I don't like the way they're sold as being different to most other girl groups, and the music doesn't back it up.

Tom, the charts only exist as a "capitalist marketing tool" to steal pocket money from kids and teenagers - and you know it pall!

Greg, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (11 years ago) Permalink

Let's see. I'll have to think hard about this one.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (11 years ago) Permalink

Ok... I saw some little piece on them in some magazine, and then you all found them worthy of at least commenting.... so I downloaded "Overload" off some weird Russian site, and I think it's a pretty damn catchy song. It definitely has a little more substance than most teen pop, and the beat reminds me of... what was that early 90's dance/ novelty band... Deeelite? "Groove is in the Heart?" With a little Arabic melodicism thrown in. I don't think they'll make a dent here in the US, but it's not a bad song at all.

Andy, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (11 years ago) Permalink

Dud Dud Dud

I really loved Overload when I first heard it and thought Sugababes really were something but all that "We're not like other pop groups because when we dance we have really blank expressions on our faces and in fact we hardly dance at all and we certainly aren't going to waste our time by dressing nicely just because we're on telly" shit really bored me

jamesmichaelward, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (11 years ago) Permalink

Don't know about the group themselves - I've only heard "Overload", which is indeed very nice but not lifechanging - however I'd say the reaction to the group has to be DUD. They're so clearly the pop band that people who don't like pop latch onto as a token example of their openmindedness. Which is cool as far as it goes, but I'm sick of hearing about critics having this revelation over them being the way forward. They're to current pop what MJ Cole is to garage and Roni Size was to jungle.

Tim, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (11 years ago) Permalink

Isn't Overload just Beck with tits? Not that that's a bad thing.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (11 years ago) Permalink

Beck with tits: dud. MJ Cole being the token garage record in cool people's collections: I thought you meant MJ Hibbett, and was thusly baffled.

Greg, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (11 years ago) Permalink

i don't think the 'classic or dud' question was pointed in the direction of the critics who are freaking out about them, hm? that would be a separate thread, and surely there are more offensive offenders out there in that respect. currently i am on what is approximately my two hundredth listen of 'one touch' since it arrived in my mailbox last week, and i LOVE LOVE LOVE it. (and hi, i like pop and even 'pop,' so please to not tar me with your brush of backlash.)

putting aside all the reasons for hype, the SONGS (remember those?) are a) catchy as all get-out (i've found myself singing 'lush life' and 'promises' as well as 'overload' at inappropriate moments), b) remarkably understated sonically which only serves to increase their eventual insidiousness into that part of the skull that holds on to hooks and doesn't let them go, c) remarkably mature (not 'slutty' which seems to pass for 'mature' here in the states) in a convincing way. sure there are songs that aren't great, that could be construed as filler, but come on! understated, cool catchiness is something that shouldn't be taken lightly today.

so. classic. whoever said it's going to tank in the US was sadly right, though. unless someone comes up with a vocoder-heavy trendy american remix for 'overload' -- but NO NO NO that must not happen.

Surely Babe means sexy girl. So they should be called the Sugamingers.

Emma, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (11 years ago) Permalink

To amend the "melancholy sound" idea: Thinking about it now, it seems as though the 'Babes are more aware of themselves than other poop groups. More down-to-earth. Both in their words and in their songs. Sounds like bullshit, yeah, but it's a feeling I get.

Like "Overload" - they're not talking about pop music (thank god) or love or ... love. They want to get out of school early & take a break, unwind. The other songs, too, are rooted more in the minutae of their situations, instead of just tossing out fire/desire claptrap.

That's probably why "The Call" stuck with me - it's an atypical song, going somewhere that other songs of its sort haven't gone before. Yes, it's just a song about some boys playing off their infidelity via a cell-phone bombing out. But compared to "..Baby One More Time" or "Candy" or "I Turn To You", it's Randy Newman.

I heard yesterday that on their upcoming greatest hits album, they're re-recording everything with Siobhan's original vocals, with the Amelle's vocals....

is this allowed???

I was looking forward to this (arguably the greatest girl band hits album of the 2000's), but not so now that they've airbrushed out sugababes 1.0 in such a stalinist way.
has any other act done this...?

i'm not entirely sure I'd notice the change, but Dammit Jim! its the principle.

yes. this happened within about a WEEK of mutya leaving - I was v impressed with their efficiency.

I probably prefer all the originals, because I've got used to how they sound, and because I really love Mutya's voice in particular (still not heard Amelle's!), but I can't see any point in getting het up about re-recording, especially now that it's been established that this endless cycle of members is What Sugababes Do.

Are the Sugababes really, really big in the UK? If it weren't for ILM I doubt I would have ever heard of them, living in the US.

I have the Amelle version of "Red Dress" and it's really not that different. I've heard the original version many times so I'm sensitive to little changes, like her timing is different in places and stuff like that. It's subtle. I've never heard of groups rerecording already-released songs...I don't think Destiny's Child ever did that, and they went through their fair share of switching.

It occurred to me today that "Ace Reject" is just one of the best propulsive-pop-ballads ever, up there with "Born To Make You Happy". I wish Xenomania and Sugababes would collaborate on an album of just weepy album tracks like this and "Situation's Heavy". But it might not be the same without Mutya.

I hadn't noticed before either how Mutya and Keisha's vocals on "Ace Reject" follow completely different melodies, they could have almost made it into two songs. It's like [verse a] [bridge a] [verse b] [bridge b] [chorus] [Heidi's middle eight] [bridge b] [chorus]. But so subtly done!

Reason Sugababes is unknown in the US is Island never released Angels w/ Dirty Faces there. Confusing, given its success in the DJ and club community. Angels.. is top-notch, but agreed Universal seems to be holding a tighter grip on production lately.

isn't 'gotta be you' a bit...i dunno, a cheaper version of crunk? it tries to be crunk, fails, and works in an entirely different way.

i was talking with frank kogan about how much potential the sugababes had for US crossover - he thinks not much, what with the teenpop market drying up and the sugababes not being quite r&b enough. i really don't know!

Sugababe arrested over 'attack'

Sugababes member Amelle Berrabah has been arrested after an alleged attack on a car in Aldershot, Hampshire.
Police confirmed a 23-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage and a public order offence after an incident on 9 January.

She was bailed to appear at Aldershot police station on 21 February.

The pop star joined the successful girl group in 2005. Her boyfriend Freddie Fuller is recovering after being attacked with a machete last month.

The group claimed the number one spots on both the singles and album charts in the UK in October last year, with their latest album Change and single About You Now.

singles between round round and about you now:

stronger
angels w dirty faces
shape
hole in the head
too lost in you
in the middle
caught in a moment
push the button
ugly
red dress
follow me home
easy
walk this way

i'd side with that claim. Push the Button and hole in the head are close, but I *really* like About You Now.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Sunday, 22 July 2012 18:55 (9 months ago) Permalink

not looking to defend popjustice (i agree that its approach to pop music is mostly utter bollocks) but they always overhype a new single, especially when it's an exclusive to them and feel they have to big it up - I doubt they'd stand by that "about you now" claim now, or ever really believed it beyond the hype of the moment. of course it nearly always makes them look ridiculous in hindsight, but if it keeps big exclusives coming in i doubt they care.

clearly "too lost in you" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

though looking at that list their singles are probably on the whole less great than I remembered (quite a few dud choices of singles to release), in that they were much better album artists for their first two lineups.

prolego, Sunday, 22 July 2012 19:36 (9 months ago) Permalink

though to be fair overload > new year > run for cover > soul sound > freak like me > round round > stronger is completely imperious.

prolego, Sunday, 22 July 2012 19:44 (9 months ago) Permalink

"about you now" tends to get underrated, it's sort of flawless despite being massively derivative and unimaginative. but the idea that they had any sort of dip in between "round round" and "about you now" is just weird. "too lost in you" is a towering pinnacle of their discography, better than either, "angels with dirty faces" and "follow me home" are up there too - though perhaps it's true that their absolute best songs in the three/taller eras were the deep cuts.

lex pretend, Sunday, 22 July 2012 20:57 (9 months ago) Permalink

Agree with the above, though I prefer "Caught In A Moment" (and also "Sometimes"!) - I love "About You Now", I just dislike the implied dismissal of many of the amazing songs in between ("Stronger"! "Hole In The Head"! "Red Dress"! "Follow Me Home"!).

Best songs on Three: "Situation's Heavy", "Maya".

Best songs on Taller: "Ace Reject", "2 Hearts".

prolego otm though some people here take what Popjustice says way too seriously.

daavid, Monday, 23 July 2012 19:23 (9 months ago) Permalink

...I mean basically they've always had a very spontaneous approach to pop. When Peter's excited about something he doesn't care to hype it to ridiculous proportions. He's not thinking "oh, is this going to sound relevant x years from now?" etc. I don't really have a problem with that. In fact I think it is the right approach. With most pop music, retrospective evaluation is in many ways irrelevant anyway imo.

daavid, Monday, 23 July 2012 19:49 (9 months ago) Permalink

Agree totally with Lex and Tim on Taller choices, that is probably my favourite album of theirs. Three is mostly great, Conversation's Over was always my favourite album track on there.

I used to value Popjustice a lot more than I do now. They give way too much time to the same few bands. Everytime JLS or The Saturdays have a new single they always give them way too much attention. I get that they are two of the biggest pop bands but their songs just blend into each other and they are not great popstars in anyway.

I remember losing a lot of respect for them when they claimed the last Girls Aloud album was great and put it as their second favourite album of the year, then a year later they claimed the reason they didn't give Electrik Red anytime was beacause their album was too patchy, I mean it just does not compute. They continue to say how they hate Olly Murs (with good reason) but put one of his singles in thier top ten last year and made a post saying they were obsessed with his last single. I get that they want to try and rate songs not based on the artist singing them but can't they spend more time writing about iamamiwhoiami or Dawn Richard? The way they just ignore some artists existence and coninue to write about such average acts just gets so tiring.

technically speaking, that sounds like it's squarely in the comfort spot for her singing voice (and based on the little bit I hear of her speaking voice in that clip, it's also where she talks so she's permanently warmed up on those notes); it also shows she has an excellent ear because there isn't any quavering or sliding off the pitch

there is a reason not to get their last two albums cuz they're kinda bad

first three are varying degrees of excellent, though, then just grab "about you now" off the fifth and you're sorted

can't believe dan of all people hadn't done this already!

I kind of got stuck on "Hole in the Head" and never really moved past it

"hole in the head" is great but i don't think it'd be in my top 10 sugababes songs

my number one all-time favourite sugababes song is "run for cover"

that was done when they were like 15; when they were grown, they did my second favourite song by them, "ace reject"

seriously their harmonies under the second chorus and through the ad libs afterwards are slaying me

"lay down in swimming pools" has such a great sense of build - the way they hold the main hook back until three minutes, until just after siobhan's ghostly bridge, and then you've got keisha triumphantly telling you how i'mma show you how to turn it up a notch

this is just an incredibly great piece of music
