Wow....this is a toughie

I'm going to forego with the obvious choice of "Dirty Water" by the Standells and go with "Friday on My Ming" by the Easybeats

Runners-Up:
"Diddy Wah Diddy" by Captain Beefheart
"Open My Eyes" by the Nazz

i've been listening to the zipper album lately, with fred cole on vocals. fucking great, ridiculous butt rock with cole's vocals somewhere between robert plant and dave thomas. it is supreme.

dave q, Thursday, 6 March 2003 12:05 (10 years ago) Permalink

The Smoke and The Factory would also make my shortlist, but aaaaahhhh, it's got to be Mindrocker. It sounds like a bubblegum version of late Spacemen3/early Spz - how could I not love it?

It's the unkown blueprint for Indie Pop too, innit? Both Blur's "She's So High" and that Mock Turtles song used in the Vodafone ads remind me of it...

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 6 March 2003 13:46 (10 years ago) Permalink

argh. I could pick a different one every day, I expect. Today, Too Many People, by the Leaves. Gotta love that lousy harmonica and perfect 60s punk "mom and dad, get off my back! and you, too, me corporate establishment!" whine. And I mean that as a huge compliment. I've only ever listened to Nuggets 2 all the way through once, though. Have to give it another try.

pauls00, Thursday, 6 March 2003 13:59 (10 years ago) Permalink

Just re-read this, and noticed I mistyped "Friday On My Mind" by the Easybeats as "Friday On My MING", which sounds like an ode to a priceless vase.

That "Up in My Mind" song. Them's rock, forget who did it, one of the obscurer numbers.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:52 (10 years ago) Permalink

Wait, that "I'm five years ahead of my Time" song by I forget who.

I need to buy that box set.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:59 (10 years ago) Permalink

Charlatans, "Codeine," far and away.

yeah, that's great - because of that song i now have like 10 versions of "codeine" by different artists sitting on my harddrive. none of them is better than the charlatans version.

your null fame (yournullfame), Thursday, 6 March 2003 21:16 (10 years ago) Permalink

I couldn't believe it when I saw Boys Don't Cry, and "Codeine" was playing during that scene where the Swank character is getting dressed. I was like "yes! the charlatans!". That whole Amazing Charlatans cd is really good, much better than the original record they released on Phillips. The version of "Alabama Bound" on there kicks ass.

Anyway, that said my OPO is:

Another vote for "Don't Look Back"

"Talk Talk", "Nobody But Me", "Spazz", "7 and 7 Is" and "Are You a Boy Or a Girl" are way up there, though.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 07:20 (9 years ago) Permalink

I believe Saggitarius' underrated masterpiece "My World Fell Down" was on the original "Nuggets" album, which makes my choice quite easy indeed.

Though it is a close-run thing between it, "I'm Five Years Ahead Of My Time" by the Third Bardo and, well, about half the rest of the box.

"Don't Look Back" by the Remains

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:42 (8 years ago) Permalink

I'll also go with "Don't Look Back." That song's got it all -- crazed momentum, killer octave jump on the chorus, righteous attitude, and two great parts where it all falls apart and then perfectly back together again. Plus, the gospelly part is like a sermon about how ya just gotta do what ya WANT!

briania (briania), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:49 (8 years ago) Permalink

And it's about the DEVIL!

briania (briania), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:59 (8 years ago) Permalink

I think my favorite part is at the end of the sermon-y part, when he says "and when they start-a their talk-talk-talkin'..." and the drums come back in with this crazy funky beat for like two measures before stopping again for the little bass breakdown.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:04 (8 years ago) Permalink

No brainer: Captain Beefheart - Diddy Wah Diddy.

Thrying to chose what comes second could be a major exercise 'though!

But wait ... "Scream" by Ralph Nelson and the Chancellors?? Every so often you hear a title that's just gotta be great. Marco, please tell us that's available somewhere!

nuggets 1 - elastik band - "spazz"
nuggets 2 - the idle race - "imposters of life's magazine"

"But wait ... "Scream" by Ralph Nelson and the Chancellors?? Every so often you hear a title that's just gotta be great. Marco, please tell us that's available somewhere!"

you can find it on the "Back from the grave vol.1", cd version.
it's totally insane: out of control, frantic, with venomous guitar licks and...erm, screams. it sounds like the perfect marriage between out-there 50's rock n roll à la Hasil Adkins and a frat party band (is this the term?) gone horribly wrong. And its good to dance too.

ps "don't look back" is another monster song, of course...
