the first instance i can think of is Mousse T's 'Horny' - the lyrical version from '98 (i think) but surely there was something a lot earlier than that - a hip hop track from '93/'94 perhaps?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 2 March 2003 19:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

I thought it was Billy Idol's Cyberpunk. Which was what, 93? 94?

kate, Sunday, 2 March 2003 19:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

But was that a hit by any stretch of the imagination, though?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 2 March 2003 19:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

and what exactly was the reference by Idol? did he make a direct reference to the www or was it just general Gibson-inspired cyberspace nonsense like The Shamen were also doing around that time? i suppose i'm looking for reference to the internet as more a general, passive thing and not part of the underlying theme/concept behind the song e.g. in the Mousse T its just one of many methods that someone is trying to find someone

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 2 March 2003 19:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

and how about the first casual reference to a 'a pager' and a 'celly' or mobile while we're at it

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 2 March 2003 19:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think the first time I heard the word "internet" in a song was Destiny's Child's "Survivor," ala I'm not going to diss you on the... etcetera.

Killing Joke had a track on their `96 album, Democracy called "Intellect," that featured the chorus, Kiss My Intellect Goodbye, which many mistook for Kiss my INTERNET Goodbye . They were wrong, though.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 2 March 2003 20:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

i like the ones that don't make any sense

"put this in your cd-rom, w w w.cannibus.com"

ron (ron), Sunday, 2 March 2003 20:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

poe to thread.

predates britney's "e-mail my heart" by a good three-four years.

"Joey mailed the mail the mail he mailed"

Anthrax I'm The Man, 1987

the first time i heard it used in a song was the Goldie/KRS-One collaboartion where KRS goes "reprazentin' like tha internet!'

which was 96, i think.

Wyndham Earl, Sunday, 2 March 2003 21:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

theres a dub on blood&fire's "x-ray music" which has a vocal soundbite which the more you listen to it, the more it sounds like "the internet". i know it can't be, its a late 70's dub...

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 2 March 2003 21:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

There's a track on Kraftwerk's "computerworld" album with lyrics about online dating, only it's from 1981 and therefore before anyone actually had internet access.

DV (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 2 March 2003 23:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Deeper Understanding" - Kate Bush, from _The Sensual World_, 1989. Though at the time i didn't really care for the song (and still don't, really.) Unfortunately, might be disqualified by lack of reference to the Internet per se.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Sunday, 2 March 2003 23:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

And of course, it wasn't a hit, so it probably doesn't even belong on the list here. Next time i'll read the entire thread title...

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Sunday, 2 March 2003 23:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

did you just see the word 'record' and think 'aha!' then?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 3 March 2003 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

What year did _Emancipation_ come out again?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 March 2003 01:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm with Sterling. I'm guessing that "Disconnected Modem" line from Poe's "Hello" was the first HIT I ever heard an internet reference in. I wasn't happy about it.

"Tipp City" by the Amps (kim Deal) 1995 "I have relations/
With anonymous internet nation"

Aaron A., Monday, 3 March 2003 01:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

Poe is '95 so she was pretty on top of things.

Village People have a song whose video involves pre-internet bbses even though the lyrics are only about sex on the phone. Circa '86 I think.

First mention of cell phones surely can't be destiny's child's bugaboo but that's what strikes me.

Pagers gotta be in 80s rap but I don't remember where would be a good start.

3LW's "No More" is the first time I felt I heard a reference to a pager completely and naturally integrated into day-to-day life.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 3 March 2003 01:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, in '88 NWA had "Fucking with me cuz I'm a teenager/ with a little bit of gold and a pager" but I'm sure there were earlier ones.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 3 March 2003 02:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Q-Tip rhymed "teenager" and "pager" on some Tribe Called Quest song, but that was definitely after '88.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 3 March 2003 02:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

could Jethro Tull's "J-TULL.COM" album have been any more analogous?

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 March 2003 02:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

Pagers didn't blow up until '86 or so, I think.

How many ".com" albums and songs are there anyway? There's r. kelly's tp-2.com and craig david had a track I think, and trick daddy's thug.com and what else?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 3 March 2003 02:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

Just to throw some more data points out there... Warren Zevon's Transverse City (1989) has got all sorts of references to "the network" but doesn't namecheck the Internet specifically.

Earliest cell phone song I know of is Roger McGuinn's "Car Phone" from 1991

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Monday, 3 March 2003 06:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

"parents just don't understand" by jazzy jeff & fresh prince mentions a car phone and that's from '89

"Me and all the rich got mobile 'phones" - Happy Mondays 1990, but there must be earlier UK ones.

Internet Curtains by Denim!

suzy (suzy), Monday, 3 March 2003 12:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

On a vaguely related note, the AMG has a rich list of song titles with the word 'Internet' in them, including "Internet MCs," "Internet is Gay," "Internet Loser," "Internet Pygmy," "Eaten by the Internet," "Amor de Internet," "Internet is Just Bad Pot," "Chica del Internet," "Internet Critic (Interlude)," "Internet Relay Chat with the Central Intelligence Agency," "Bloody Internet" and the ineffable "Internetejakulator."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 March 2003 15:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

didn't pete townshend write a concept alb abt the (idea of) the internet?

i don't know when though

mark s (mark s), Monday, 3 March 2003 16:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

'Internet Curtains' by Denim, b-side to 'It Fell Off The Back Of A Lorry', circa 1996.

A hit in the fact that it got nearer to the top 40 than any other Denim release.

"www I'm the shit dot-com" - Chubb Rock, Prince Paul Presents "A Prince Among Thieves" (1999)

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 3 March 2003 18:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

you forgot Chubb's brilliant removal of a "w": listen again and you'll see that he only uses 2 'w's.

(yes, I'm a sad, sad man)

oops (Oops), Monday, 3 March 2003 18:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

oh I didn't forget, I was just trying to cover for him...

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 3 March 2003 18:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

no need to cover for him, it was 'brilliant'. Seriously though, a third 'w' would ruin his flow.

twelve years pass...

came across toy-box's ultra-cheesy www.girl today and asked myself this very question. my first thought was, "i bet ilx has a thread on this subject". was not disappointed

I suspect there must be one older than Poe's "Hello" (first released late '95, became a hit on U.S. genre charts in late '96). The web was enough of a thing in 1995 for The Simpsons to make jokes about the internet containing nerds and porn. But that wouldn't transfer well to serious music :)

The unusual thing is that Poe's line, "like a disconnected modem", makes total sense. Most other lyricists seem amiably clueless about the technology or the lingo, e.g.

I tried to call you
But I can't find the telephone
I sent a message through the internet
But it rejected
(sic)

Cut Mousse T some slack, it's not his first language. Could there be an equally silly line on a hit in '95 or earlier?

remember hearing this circa 1998 and finding it hilarious, if only because of the crowbarring of www., but neglecting to finish with a suffix.
