You just mean sweet-voiced reggae singers? How about Larry Marshall, John Holt...

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 18:10 (10 years ago) Permalink

yeah pretty much sweet-voiced reggae but - ahh i don't know how to describe it - i guess stuff from the beginning of the early post-rocksteady era that retained a strong connection to U.S. soul sounds... some of it even a bit schmaltzy like alton's "can't get used to losing you"

but that's way too academic a description of what i really mean

john holt is exactly what i mean

Hopeton Lewis, Eric Donaldson, Ken Boothe, Johnny Clarke, Teddy Davis, Lord Creator for starters.
Two good comps (there are tons) that feature these and others are "Darker Than Blue: Soul from Jamdown 1973-1980" (Blood and Fire); and "UB40's Jukebox: 18 Original Reggae hits later Recorded by UB40" (Fuel 2000).

The "Tighten Up" comps also feature a lot of soul-derived stuff.

Heptones (Leroy Sibbles)
Mighty Diamonds--"Right Time"
Paragons (John Holt)--"On the Beach with..." (features 'Tide is High'), "Riding High with..."

Heptones, yes! And how could I forget the Itals?

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 18:30 (10 years ago) Permalink

Must mention that not only is Leroy Sibbles an amazing vocalist/songwriter, he also is a great bass player who some credit w/developing the reggae-style bassline.

Ken Booth is grebt! Check out the "Phil Pratt Thing" compilation, I think he's on there(??), and it is wunnerful.

if you don't mind him being a little late-ish, Gregory Isaacs

Neudonym, Wednesday, 26 February 2003 19:29 (10 years ago) Permalink

Gregory Isaacs is much more "roots" though, and his diction isn't as good as the above.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 19:34 (10 years ago) Permalink

True, dat, but classic nonetheless. And what does diction have to do with it?

Neudonym, Wednesday, 26 February 2003 19:38 (10 years ago) Permalink

Just that singers of an earlier generation than Isaacs (musical generations in Jamaican pop lasting about 5-6 years) typically enunciated more clearly. Ken Booth(e) to a hilarious extent, sometimes.

The Heptones - "Pretty Looks Isn't All" is godlike

dennis brown is great.
