After reading so much praise about it for years, it disappointed me when I finally bought it. But I'm not much one for "concept" albums either.
I'll take "Stardust" over that one (not that that was your question).

It seems more like half a concept and a lot of guff. Plenty listenable, though.

One helluva half-hour.

Great record, tho I'm not sure I agree w/the usual consensus that it's his best. I hand that honor to "Shotgun Willie".

"Hands Over The Wheel" = so so so good. has anyone ever heard the original?

i picked it up initially because of Carla Bozulich's enthusiasm for it (her version should be coming out this year, complete with a couple duets with Willie himself(!)), but i really love it. so minimal and dark, i'm still shocked that this was his multi-platinum breakthrough.

right now this is the only Willie i have, what should i get next?

Of the same period/style I highly highly recommend "Shotgun Willie", "The Troublemaker" (all gospel tunes), "The Sound of Your Mind" and "Live/I Gotta Get Drunk". You can find most of Willie's 70s output on vinyl very cheap and almost all of it is worth hearing.

Willie Nelson / Ray Price - San Antonio Rose for classic Nashville country done almost exactly right and several Bob Wills covers

Stardust, for simply outstanding nylon-string brush-drumming fluttery heart-strings versions of old standards

not familiar with the more recent stuff - i heard the blues album was no great shakes

My least favorite in the trilogy, but still damn fine.
