I was riding out to the airport, and they played this on the local alternashit radio station (apparently the DJ got dozens of calls on the order of, "stop playing that crap!") between System of a Down (eek) and The All-American Rejects (oh brother). I was quite moved, shaken even.

Is there any kind of critical consensus on his "American Recordings" records? I've previously been wary, but now I'm curious.

(I'm simultaneously beginning to appreciate Nine Inch Nails about 10 years after the fact.)

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:30 (10 years ago) Permalink

Oh right, the DJ was "defending" Cash in the most asinine terms imaginable, going on about how "Cash has been to prison about 90 times" (er, perhaps as a performer) etc.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:31 (10 years ago) Permalink

Oh when you see Johnny's hands shaking as he closes the piano it's rather poignant isn't it?

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:33 (10 years ago) Permalink

Solitary Man is a great record. I don't think Cash's voice has ever sounded stronger than it does there -- in particular the title track and "I See a Darkness" (an Oldham cover) are fantastic.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:33 (10 years ago) Permalink

i like the new one more than 'solitary man', great as 'see a darkness' is

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:44 (10 years ago) Permalink

yeah the new one is the best one yet - the title track is just gorgeous

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:52 (10 years ago) Permalink

best one yet = best rick rubin one yet, right?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 18:01 (10 years ago) Permalink

Today he is 71. I'm listening to Silver right now, a bit of a forgotten gem in his catalogue...very understated production, esp considering it was 1979.

Yay, we still have Johnny.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 18:51 (10 years ago) Permalink

I've just heard this version for the first time right now. Anyone who says Trent Reznor can't write songs is a FULE.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 19:52 (10 years ago) Permalink

singing them, on the other hand....

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 19:54 (10 years ago) Permalink

To Matos: "You fucking die." "What?" "I said you FUCKING DIE!"

;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 19:55 (10 years ago) Permalink

(I heart Michaelangelo.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 19:55 (10 years ago) Permalink

What's funny is that coming out Trent Reznor's mouth, this song sounds insufferably callow and pretentious. But out of Johnny's, only a little bit pretentious and not at all callow.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 19:56 (10 years ago) Permalink

Trent Reznor could sing the Sermon on the Mount and it would sound pretentious and callow

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 19:59 (10 years ago) Permalink

Has next album should be called _Songs For The Pretentious And Callow_. I'd totally buy it.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 20:01 (10 years ago) Permalink

unfortunately, it'll probably be called I Bleed or something

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 20:03 (10 years ago) Permalink

I'd still buy it.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 20:04 (10 years ago) Permalink

I Bleed Pretention would be a nice compromise.

W/r/t Johnny, is he still married to June? I had thought they separated, but there she is in the video.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 20:04 (10 years ago) Permalink

(I'm not questioning that, Dan, I just wish the title were bound to be better/more honest, though I'm not saying he doesn't bleed....)

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 20:06 (10 years ago) Permalink

Where did you hear that they had seperated? As far as I know they're still together...when I saw him in concert a few years ago it broke my heart to hear the emotion in his voice when he introduced June. He seemed ready to fall down and kiss her feet right there.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 20:09 (10 years ago) Permalink

they're a pretty famously still-together couple, can't imagine where you got that info from

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 20:10 (10 years ago) Permalink

From The Encyclopedia of Thoroughly Dodgy Unverified Information, aka my brain.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 20:11 (10 years ago) Permalink

oh yeah, I'm reviewing that for the Voice this week

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 20:24 (10 years ago) Permalink

Johnny wrote "I Walk the Line" for June. That's class. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 20:25 (10 years ago) Permalink

This video really did bring a tear or two to me eye. It's even creepier and more moving remembering the NIN vid with the animal decaying, and to watch this one in the same context...and geez his voice'll move mountains.

And on the American Recordings tip: they're one of my favorite labels of the past few years. Very daring. Johnny Cash, System of a Down, Wesley Willis, the John Frusciante solo albums, Slayer, not to mention the last Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan recordings were done by Rubin & released through American.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 20:27 (10 years ago) Permalink

the John Frusciante solo albums

Just the first one, but it's better than anything the RHCP have done ever.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 20:29 (10 years ago) Permalink

By "American Recordings" I just meant the series of Johnny Cash albums. I have no time for System of a Down (or Wesley Willis for that matter).

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 20:34 (10 years ago) Permalink

I've watched this video five times... Johnny Cash is now my favorite performer EVAH.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 26 February 2003 20:35 (10 years ago) Permalink

The Jesus-being-nailed-to-the-cross stuff at the end is sort of annoying; perhaps it's just there to remind you of the song's provenance.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 21:42 (10 years ago) Permalink

The original NIN video for this song was great though.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 21:44 (10 years ago) Permalink

I have decided for the moment that this is the greatest record ever. And actually the Jesus stuff at the end of the video feels strangely earned, unlike most of the heavy-handed symbolism in music videos.

Did Mark Romanek direct the NIN video as well?

And what is Grandpa Simpson's theory, Jess?

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 23:34 (10 years ago) Permalink

No, wait, I just remembered (the theory that is).

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 23:35 (10 years ago) Permalink

("it'll happen to YOU.")

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 23:36 (10 years ago) Permalink

I can't remember where I heard it, but I believe that the images of Jesus in the video come from a 1973 movie that Cash produced titled The Gospel Road.

Nick Mirov (nick), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 23:51 (10 years ago) Permalink

The comic book from Johnny's born-again period (a period coinciding with the production of this movie) that Nick Tosches reproduces in Country is wonderful/awful.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 23:53 (10 years ago) Permalink

I can't play it anymore :(

*cries*

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 26 February 2003 23:58 (10 years ago) Permalink

I actually like that June wrote "Ring of Fire" for John even more (but then I like "Ring of Fire" more than "I Walk the Line")

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 27 February 2003 00:08 (10 years ago) Permalink

It's a good matchup either way. :-)

Haven't seen the video, but as for the question about his American Recordings, it's a great big C for Classic from me. For me 'Solitary Man' is the best of the bunch.

I've been listening (and sneaking a look when I can) to it all morning. Incredible stuff. But probably hard to top.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 27 March 2003 12:40 (10 years ago) Permalink

it is a great song-i was surprised how old he looks
its weird to hear him sing the lyrics,i mean i've never heard the original, but it would sound so juvenile coming from anyone else...
the rest of the album is good, although there are a few dodgy tracks (danny boy in particular)
cheesy and all as it is,the we'll meet again cover is great, and i really like personal jesus...
the will oldham and nick cave covers off the other albums are great as well..

robin (robin), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:20 (10 years ago) Permalink

I must get this, a personal jesus cover? wow, sounds good.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:22 (10 years ago) Permalink

What a great video, Ive listened to his new CD a million times. He's in his 70s, has a disease which just about paralized him, and yet, I'm still sure he could kick anybody's ass.

David Allen, Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:35 (10 years ago) Permalink

It's pretty damn great -- haven't seen any of the videos, but the album is mighty MIGHTY fine.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:40 (10 years ago) Permalink

I finally did see the video, and it manages to be much more harrowing and sad than anything I've seen in a video in a long. But again, yes, the album is great.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:47 (10 years ago) Permalink

! Dang, that's praise.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:53 (10 years ago) Permalink

I honestly don't see too many videos, though. I don't get that fancypants VH1 Classic or a gajillion channels of MTV like many foax seem to.

When you see June standing behind him, and then it cuts to her close-up and there's a palpable sense of worry or impending loss on her face, it slays me. Within months of this video's release, they were both gone.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 23 February 2012 02:17 (1 year ago) Permalink

I always do a short history-of-video thing (which is really just a these-are-my-favourite-videos thing) with my students. I show them five or six: "Hurt," "Nothing Compares to U," "Walking Contradiction," "Smells Like Teen Spirit," "No Rain," one or two others.

clemenza, Thursday, 23 February 2012 02:25 (1 year ago) Permalink

6 months pass...

Mark Romanek, video director of “Hurt” on making the video with Johnny and June:

The sadness in the ‘Hurt’ video is genuine. Johnny said that “Hurt” was the best anti-drug song he’d ever heard. The rage you see when he pours the wine on the table or starts to weep is a direct result of having lost people to addictions – and almost having lost himself. But he was playing a role. On set, when we yelled, “Cut,” a very different, very funny, much more energetic Johnny Cash emerged. When we were shooting the piano scene, he said, “Maybe you want June to dance naked on the piano there.” June said, “Oh, John!” and the crew broke up. He was playful with June – the degree to which they were in love with each other was palpable after all these years. Johnny was also extremely generous —-he autographed about thirty-five vinyl copies of The Man Comes Around as a parting gift to the crew, who were in awe. That had never been done by any of the forty artists I’ve worked with.

One of the few good quotes from Bono on anything "Every man knows he is a sissy compared to Johnny Cash."
