New Calexico-anyone care?

I got a pre-release of it, but it leaves me cold like most of their stuff. Especially alongside the Cee-Lo album, which is bangin'.

hmm you're probably not the best authority on the subject in that case. i don't mind Calexico but i'm not exactly excited by the prospect of a new release of theirs

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 24 January 2003 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably not, Jim. I WANT to like them tho'.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 24 January 2003 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

i really liked at least two of their last three singles so i'd have reasonably high hopes.. is it in the same vein?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 24 January 2003 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

oooh yes idocare!
it's going to be released here (netherlands) on Feb10, there's a prerelease acoustic preview/hear in my town on the 7th though... i'm really looking forward to it as i absolutely love the previous albums (especially the black light). if you're not, than jim is probably right about you not being the best authority...
that's not to say that i would be, but i'll be more than happy to give you my opinion on the alb. (after feb10...)

their liveshows are absolutely amazing! a few years back they brought along a 5-piece mariachi band, both the audience and the band went mad.

willem (willem), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I care very much, but I haven't heard it yet. I am going to see them again, for the umpteenth time. I did like The Black Light better than the last one, however.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 24 January 2003 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

little known fact: the black light was my favourite album of all time for a small patch of the year 1999

They should change their names to Samey Same and the Samesters. Or, more appropriately, Los Samesters.

I've made a storied habit out of badmouthing Calexico for some time, but last night, big Calexico-head Tod from Firewater *MADE* me listen to their new one, FEAST OF WINE. I'll say this -- `twas a bit more dynamic than the stuff of theirs I'd heard in the past, but that same old Tex-Mex prarie twillight somnambulism crept in, leaving me yawning and fumbling for the off switch. In all seriousness, there were some nice moments on it, but I don't think I could make it through a whole album of it. I like the creepier, more atmospheric tracks the best.

I really really like "Service and Repair" from Hot Rail, but that's about it. Overall Calexico is a little too wallpapery for me to actively care about them. That doesn't mean that I won't eventually get the new one, though; wallpaperness isn't necessarily a negative trait in music.

Nick Mirov (nick), Friday, 31 January 2003 01:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got to agree with the aural wallpaper assessment. I've always used Calexico as background music, something to listen to while concentrating on something else. Plus, I like the songs with the mariachi-style horns. I always like songs with mariachi-style horns.

one month passes...
In a "just asking to be flamed on ILM" about-face, I have now decided that I love this album. HA

Anything else I should get if I like this? ;)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 17 March 2003 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

i find the album dull. it's my first exposure to calexico, and it is not a pleasant one.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 17 March 2003 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Nordicskillz, if you're asking about other interesting Calexico releases, get The Black Light (1998), it's gorgeous (lots of Mariachi trumpets!). The previous album, Hot Rail is also worth every minute/penny, but a bit less "urgent".

willem (willem), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I read somewhere recently that "Untitled III" off of Hot Rails is a cover of a Two Lone Swordsmen track. Is this true? It sounds really familiar but I can't figure out where I've heard it or which TLS track it's supposed to be.

Calexico remixed 'Tiny Reminder 3' - it's on Further Reminders.

"little known fact: the black light was my favourite album of all time for a small patch of the year 1999"

ha, ditto. still their most enjoyable album. they're good live!

pete b. (pete b.), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I was looking at this yesterday at my record shoppe -- sounds like i did good to unhand it.

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

my fave of theirs is aerocalexico. a beautiful nick drake cover (clothes of sand) and some slightly experimental jazzy tracks. listened to some songs of the new one and they didn't excite me much. i really can't stand that mariachi stuff.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll be the dissenter here... I like Feast Of Wire. First Calexico in a long time that I've liked on the first listen - but I also like the "mariachi stuff" too. Great Minutemen cover.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

yeh but did they actually COVER them?

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

alex, aerocalexico is indeed great (did you buy it at one of their shows?).
new one: listen more often, it will settle itself in a quite, inhabitated corner of yr brain...
mariachi: why the "hatred"? it lets the sunshine in! and the live-shows truly lift-off when the 5-piece mariachi-ensemble comes on stage!! the place went mad.(they did that once out of the 3 or 4 times i saw them... let's see what they will come with in april in utrecht... every time i saw them it was a really different concert compared to the previous ones)

willem (willem), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, willem. i bought aerocalexico at a show two years ago. the mariachi thing is ok but it's a one trick pony, really. they do it at every show and i am a little fed up having seen them 3 or 4 times.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 06:13 (twenty-three years ago)

ten years pass...

This thread is pretty relevant now that the band could be seem as more adult-contemporary with their pop leaning material in the later era. Anyone still love them like me? Have you heard the RSD release "Spiritoso"?

Evan, Thursday, 25 April 2013 16:17 (thirteen years ago)

The reviews of the latest one have steered me away from it-- stuff like "recorded in New Orleans but doesn't sound like it...very mellow..." But maybe they've always been like that to an extant

if its on Spotify I will give it a try myself anyway

curmudgeon, Thursday, 25 April 2013 16:39 (thirteen years ago)

You mean the latest studio or the RSD live album?

Evan, Thursday, 25 April 2013 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

Algiers, the studio one. Did not realize till today that they have a record store day live one out also

curmudgeon, Thursday, 25 April 2013 18:51 (thirteen years ago)

Oh it's great. The full symphony backing them really lends well their cinematic sound. Really good.
