kinda ordinary, maybe, but anyone else get the feeling they've been overlooked in the history of quiet-loud-neilyounggoesmahavishnu early 90's indie rawk?

i thought this thread was going to be about me.

Jon "Johan Von Poodles" Fine makes it classic, baby.

die9o (dhadis), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:37 (10 years ago) Permalink

So does Orestes "White Piece of Toast" De La Torres and Sooyoung Park, d!390.

Classic, classic band. Find myself on occasion wishing I still had the LPs.

hstencil, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:36 (10 years ago) Permalink

I spent two years of my life in what amounted to little more than a shoody bitch magnet copyist band. therefore, classic. possibly not as classic as bastro but still...

simon 803 (simon 803), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:49 (10 years ago) Permalink

Definitely close, funny how both Bastro and Bitch Magnet's first releases were absolute dogshit, though.

hstencil, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:52 (10 years ago) Permalink

So how about post-Bitch Magnet bands: C/D? I liked Seam for a while, then got bored with the third or fourth album that sounded like all the others. Never heard Vineland. Coptic Light are of course great.

die9o (dhadis), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:55 (10 years ago) Permalink

Post-Bitch bands:

Seam: yeah, pretty good for at least the first two LPs and the first EP. Actually, I listened to the first LP the other day, it's the only thing I've still got by them. Got boring quickly, which is too bad.

Vineland: I've got the 7", it's okay. I think there might be more stuff out there or in Jon's possession. Multiple lineups. Were kinda fun live. Oh, I still have a Vineland t-shirt.

I think Orestes was in Walt Mink for a while. Duddudduddud.

Coptic Light: great. Might have to miss their show Saturday, though.

hstencil, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 16:20 (10 years ago) Permalink

major classic, better to my ears than bastro, first two albums have aged as well as anything from their era.

is sooyoung in coptic park?

dan (dan), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 16:21 (10 years ago) Permalink

No, Sooyoung's in Ee now. Jon Fine is in Coptic Light. He's got a Boomerang and he knows how to use it.

die9o (dhadis), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 16:26 (10 years ago) Permalink

coptic light, no he's not. It's Jon Fine (ex-Bitch Magnet, ex-Vineland), Jeff W. (ex-Antioch Arrow), Kevin Shea (ex-stormandstress). They rock.

hstencil, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 16:27 (10 years ago) Permalink

tell me more about this coptic light band. bitch magnet and antioch arrow were probably my 2 favourite bands in 96 / 97...

simon 803 (simon 803), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 17:20 (10 years ago) Permalink

uh, not much to say. They play in NYC regularly. No releases as of yet, but I think they have some sort of demo recorded.

hstencil, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 17:22 (10 years ago) Permalink

just want to mention that sooyoung's role in Ee is not a major one, more of a supporting role (unfortunately). between him and ash bowie living in town now, i'm always on alert for teenage idolatry nostalgia.

gygax!, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 17:30 (10 years ago) Permalink

Bitch Magnet were ace, fave things are the Caff 7" and the "Mesentery" single.. Seam's best record was the second one with the marbles on the cover. Vineland I don't like at all.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 22:39 (10 years ago) Permalink

umber is the one, i dont know anything else by them but that still gets played, lots
picked up a seam lp ,with big(ferris?) wheel on cover, it's very okish
but hey umber was a fucking revolution that everyone ripped off and NEVER admits to

i bought it on the same day as galaxie 500 today, bloody hell what a way to kick the madchester habit

matoid, Friday, 10 January 2003 01:07 (10 years ago) Permalink

I'll always go more for Seam's second album out of all of this stuff. "Autopilot" alone is a gentle, perfect treasure of a song. It's just right in more ways than I can describe.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 January 2003 02:13 (10 years ago) Permalink

what a way to kick the madchester habit

indeed. nice one!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 10 January 2003 03:44 (10 years ago) Permalink

I never thought I'd see the words "gentle, perfect treasure" on a Bitch Magnet thread.

Wish I had those 7-inchers. I've only got the "Pea" one (which is great: recorded in Louisville, first appearance of Steve "Codeine" Immerwahr!).

hstencil, Friday, 10 January 2003 03:54 (10 years ago) Permalink

I have to say, Jon Fine looks good now that he doesn't sport NedhairTM.

Sorry.

hstencil, Friday, 10 January 2003 03:56 (10 years ago) Permalink

oh my god, I love google:

vs.

He's so dreamy now (guy in the middle):

hstencil, Friday, 10 January 2003 03:59 (10 years ago) Permalink

Oh man, that picture of Jon surrounded by bemused and frowning ad executives is classic. It doesn't give you a good notion of just how rock The Poodles is, though. (Now if only that picture of Jon with long hair had loaded...)

Yeah that isn't a bad song. I can see the Seam connection. I never was able to get into this band full scale, though.

Bimble, Monday, 31 March 2008 03:06 (5 years ago) Permalink

i have a lot of time for this band, tho the later stuff is preferable.

also the name is pretty hilarious

I had Umber back in 94 or so but didn't get too immersed in it. I liked Seam more - but even they got a little tiresome after a while. The songs were good but Sooyoung Park has got to take the cake for most lifeless singer.

scott pgwp (pgwp), Wednesday, 7 January 2009 22:26 (4 years ago) Permalink

i got "are you driving me crazy?" by seam pretty early in my ventures into indie music and as a result whenever i hear a singer with a certain type of whispery voice it makes me think of park

Recanting what I said a year and a half ago. I re-acquired all the Bitch Magnet albums when I was re-engaging with my 90s self while writing my book on Slint. Umber has some great moments and Ben Hur has even more. Still not sure if I'd call it a capital-C Classic, but I do think it's an important record for that brand of music / that era.

I bring all that up because I heard yesterday that Temporary Residence is going to reissue their discography.

wow, here's hoping they might do a few other UK dates whilst they're over.

Bill A, Thursday, 31 March 2011 12:11 (2 years ago) Permalink

I remember the days when people were offended by their "sexist" name. Or people confusing them with Monster Magnet.

This edition of ATP is like the senior circuit for 90s indie... Magnum, OTC, Archers, Bitch Magnet...

Wish I could catch BM but according to their Facebook page they don't plan to do any US dates.

scott pgwp (pgwp), Thursday, 31 March 2011 16:19 (2 years ago) Permalink

Bitch Magnet was more of a late 80s thing iirc and I'm pretty sure I rc.

City of Jorts (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 31 March 2011 16:38 (2 years ago) Permalink

Yeah but their influence is all over the 90s.

I always used to see their name back in the day, but was put off by it (which is odd, in retrospect) and then I never thought much of Seam aside from the odd song or two.

Anyway, the reissue is on Spotify now, and I'm liking it a whole lot (and it sounds fantastic). At the moment I'd probably take it over Slint, who never amazed me as much as they amaze everyone else. Very fond of Americruiser at the moment. Also, if you listen to that on headphones on the subway, it really sounds like the girl voice is an announcement over the PA system: the spacial location is very interesting...

Umber is a great album - Goat-Legged Country God and Punch & Judy are so fucking good.

bro-one (electricsound), Saturday, 21 January 2012 01:18 (1 year ago) Permalink

I loved Seam but completely ignored Bitch Magnet. it might have been a case of being unable to find or otherwise access the albums. if it was something else then I was pretty stupid. these reissues are fantastic.
