Nardwuar The Human Serviette. Annoying one note joke as Sean claims or the best person for deflating egos.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 30 December 2002 19:25 (10 years ago) Permalink

I think he's classic. Highlights include Telling Boris Yelstien to "keep on rocking in the free world" and then asking him "of all the world leaders, who wears the biggest pants?", asking The Strokes about the importance of great cheeckbones in the band, selling a Red Fox doll to a very stoned Snoop Doggy Dog, asking Dan Quail who is the Prime Minister of Canada and having him get it wrong, asking Beck why people should care about him and not his hear, asking Timothy Leary if drug users get more chick or Henry Rollins if he has a soup can shaped dick.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 30 December 2002 19:30 (10 years ago) Permalink

snoop dogg stole the redd foxx doll! sonic youth busted his records, too! there's the pepper thing, too. and the sean lennon interview is good.

he's pretty good but you never get to really enjoy it when he's on muchmusic. the going coastal and much on demand interview bits are too short. and he's kind of started being just a zany character. he's really a pretty good interview guy, though. he's my favorite interview guy ever, i think. it's neat to hear him pull out some super-obscure question.

they could delete one episode of becoming from the schedule and fit in a nardwuar show.

You could just listen to his show on the CITR (via real audio no doubt) if you need more of the human serviette.

I like the first question he asked Jean:
Mr. Chretien, regarding Suharto, there's a song out there right now by a punk band called The Nomads called "The Suharto Stomp." Earlier today, as well, at UBC, there were an incredible amount of protesters. Do you think, Mr. Chretien, if you were, say, forty years younger, that you too would be writing punk songs and protesting against APEC?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 00:29 (10 years ago) Permalink

Nardwuar was doing it long before Chris Morris, actually, though that's nothing against Morris who is also good (though lots more self-important than brilliantly self-effacing Nardwuar). I heart Nardwuar, esp. as a music journalist -- I read an article by him in some punk 'zine or another and was really surprised/delighted by how well he could turn a phrase, cover a lot of ground in nice compact sentences, etc.

J0hn Darn13ll3 (J0hn Darn13ll3), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 01:04 (10 years ago) Permalink

Nardwuar is an insanely knowledgeable guy when it comes to music, but insane is the key word here. I just find his persona incredibly grating and I think he's the music journalism version of a Saturday Night Live sketch sometimes: he takes one lame thing (ie. Tommy Lee "honking the horn") and then stretches it out far too long. Narwuar's Chretien ambush was good because it was clever and it was short. Nardwuar's full-length interviews are tedious. What that boy needs is a REALLY GOOD EDITOR.

I loved when he ambushed "legendary rock producer" Kim Fowley at like the Juno awards or something. Fowley was up to the task. Nardwuar asks him something about great rock bands and Fowley says Zeppelin are the best "they are all very highly intelligent". I remember a funny clip of him approaching Bob Denver and greeting him with "hey little buddy!" That and the Yeltsin (classic) are about all I can recall of herr serviette.

If one were to make a CD-R of all the funniest interviews (as in funny to listen to) what would be the essentials? Sometimes it's hard to tell just by reading the transcripts. I've got the Nirvana mp3, the Slayer one seems worth a download, what else?

I didn't realise that he'd done so much. My favourites are the earlier interviews - the one with sonic youth for instance.

It's a fact that he has done more for local music than practically anyone else. He's put on hundreds of gigs (mostly all-ages) interviewed or showcased pretty much every little band that makes an effort to contact him, helped god knows how many musicians in thousands of ways and done more to promote the history of Cdn punk/rock than anyone.

I quibble with the last sentence though. He is generally less shrill and less confrontational in real life but he's *never* "not in character". He is always Nardwuar.

i get if people find ian's "i am mr reasonable with constructive criticism for you" bit condescending, but considering narduwar - in the middle of his usual nonsense barrage - got unwarrantedly harsh and guilt-trippy about a 20 year old concert - i don't get how anybody can think mackaye was being an asshole here.

it is kinda like that superfan thing where someone sees their idol in public and says: hey you probably don't remember this *and then goes into looooong dull anecdote about meeting idol decades ago and some "weird" thing that happened that they have thought about ever since it happened and the idol has no fucking clue what they are talking about*. and usually that creates an awkward moment. at least ian remembered the show!

i think if someone wrote a blog rant saying he wouldn't be able to put on shows again, despite turning a profit and getting a thank-you note, because the band had been mean to him about the acoustics, we'd be pissing on that person from a great height. and this is someone making that argument 20 years later.

da croupier, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:22 (7 months ago) Permalink

I think you're overlooking something very basic here, which is the Narduar character is supposed to be kind of obsessive and annoying. It's comedy.

Poliopolice, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:29 (7 months ago) Permalink

It's often more than comedy, his method can yield great interviews. Ian's not the guy to try it with though.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:38 (7 months ago) Permalink

overlooking the comedy would be saying "why is this asshole talking about k-stew and junkyard?"

da croupier, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:39 (7 months ago) Permalink

and yeah, ian's mostly game for this stuff in his usual stiff way. if it wasn't for the "remember when you were mean to me in 1991?" bit i'm sure nard wouldn't have gotten the "i wish we drank tea together and spoke like adults" critique.

da croupier, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:42 (7 months ago) Permalink

i don't think it's any mystery why naruwar's interviews with ppl who are a part of the 80s punk scene that he was a part of have a different vibe, more adversarial vibe, than the ones he does w/rappers or newer artists...newer ppl see him as this loveable wacky guy and for the 80s ppl more accustomed to that kinda punk humor bit he plays as being sort of faux naive and dickish under the veil of being an innocent

when nardwuar was doing a radio interview with harlan ellison and he dropped some news that a colleague had died and ellison was dubious at first before having to hang up for a bit to process this, nardwuar wasn't doing a sing-songy voice, but it was still nardwuar foisting a nonstop stream of trivia at a guy. so i imagine nardwuar is never really not "on" but he dials it back maybe 20%?

Do you guys think Nardwuar doesn't translate well to other parts of the world?

I showed someone in Los Angeles his videos and he said, "Why does he talk that way?" And had a really confused look. His shtick totally went over his head.

I knew a guy whose friend's room mate was Nardwuar. Apparently, he never got out of character. I believe that, but I've also heard people say that he does go out of character some times. The thing about this last part is that I think people mean he is just less in character, but he seems to have fully embraced it 100% of the time. If you listen to or watch him in the 80s or early 90s, you can see his persona transforming into what would now be his staple character. Just my thoughts.

And Nardwuar has some really classic moments. His knowledge on the Canadian/Vancouver punk/metal scene is incredible.
