Toby Keith = Al Jolson

Yeah, who the hell is Al Jolson?

The creepy thing is this specific photo is how it looks like Flava Flav with white stuff around his mouth. I guess its the crazy eyes. (Or how the bulging shirt front hides the massive clock Jolson is wearing around his neck.)

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Thursday, 19 December 2002 04:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Is this the guy from the 1-800 Collect commercials who wrote that awful simplistic flag waving country song?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 19 December 2002 04:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

I love it. From Toby Keith to the Jazz Singer. Why would Toby Keith=Al Jolson? Would that make Shania Twain and Mutt Lange Amos and Andy?

Ex-Tennis Star, Thursday, 19 December 2002 04:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

No. Toby Keith didn't do 1-800 COLLECT commercials. He does 10-10-220 commercials with ALF.

Ex_Tennis Star, Thursday, 19 December 2002 04:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

My mistake (ALF, Carrot Top, Mike Piazza, who can tell them apart?). . . but he did write that awful simplistic flag waving country song, correct?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 19 December 2002 04:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yep. That's our man. Awful and simplistic, though. We need our conservative country singers to keep the truckers, Waffle House waitresses, and rednecks entertained. A little empty gesture flag-waiving keeps em' all riled up. Yee-ha!

Ex-Tennis Star, Thursday, 19 December 2002 04:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think Alf is slumming it by hanging out with Hulk, Toby and the rest.

David Allen Coe, clearly

I wonder if there's, y'know, a conservative Iraqi country singer who performs 'put-boot-in-foreigners-ass' songs about the US?

Where are you writing this from?

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 19 December 2002 19:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

Garth Brooks + codpiece = Toby Keith

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 20 December 2002 00:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

No.
Garth Brooks + Codpiece == Travis Tritt.
Lee Greenwood + Pretty Boy Looks - Talent = Toby Keith
And considering that Greenwood doesn't have that much talent...

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Friday, 20 December 2002 03:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

Toby Keith ain't exactly Rory Calhoun. Looks-wise, leastways.

Horace Mann, Friday, 20 December 2002 04:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

Staff Sgt. Barry Sadler was better

dave q, Friday, 20 December 2002 07:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm cool with the Travis Tritt equation, but Toby Keith is way more talented than Lee Greenwood. At the very least for that "I Wanna Talk About Me" song. He's not bad when he's not talking about lady liberty ringing her bell.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 21 December 2002 18:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

the pinefox, Thursday, 24 April 2003 11:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

wait, is toby keith the guy who does the "i'm a ford truck man" commercials?

j fail (cenotaph), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

"when you see me driviiiiin' / in the left-hand laaaane!"

Those commercials? Yeah that's him.

Not to be confused with Alan Jackson, who did

"well if I had the money, tell you what I'd do / go downtown, buy a Ford truck or two"

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 24 April 2003 17:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

Toby Keith makes better videos than Alan Jackson, but that's about the only thing he does better than Alan Jackson

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 24 April 2003 17:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

Toby Keith is one of my favorite contemporary reasons for being ecstatic that the South lost the war. Sorry, guys, but even Johnny Cash isn't enough to redeem you from this heinous bastard. He should put down the gee-tar and go back to fixing transmissions at the local Grease Monkey like a good ol' boy.

justin s., Friday, 25 April 2003 05:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

Wow. I didn't realize how potentially classist that was until I saw it on screen. Sorry. But... this does not invalidate my point about Toby Keith sucking ass.

justin s., Friday, 25 April 2003 05:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was just trolling for some mp3s to, er, "sample before buying" when I came across this:

Wednesday, November 17, 2004 10:55 PM 3563351 Garth Brooks - The Dance (World Trade Center).mp3

The do what now??? Is there anything that Nu-Country won't touch?

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 19 November 2004 21:55 (nineteen years ago) link

apparently it's a remix!

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 19 November 2004 22:14 (nineteen years ago) link

better toby stuff here btw

Toby Keith has been honoured with four prizes at the Academy of Country Music awards. Toby Keith , Classic Or Dud?

"The Dance" is an old song (and far from Garth's best dance song, much less Garth's best song period), though the thought of him doing a World Trade Center Dance is indeed quite intriguing; it could easily be combined with Elephant Man's Signal Di Plane dance! (And I think George Strait did an even LESS dancebale song called something like "The Dance" in the '90s, but I might be completely wrong.)

In the new song, he sounds like a beaten man. The idea of loss is the dominant narrative. The cities are burning, the flag is getting burned. He brags about WWI, WWII, liberating France. Those days are gone, no mention of the terrorists he was so excited about 20 years ago.

— Richard Hanania (@RichardHanania) July 5, 2021

actually, start here

There's a new Toby Keith song, Happy Birthday America, and I'm surprised how bitter and angry it is. For the 4th of July, it's worth showing how Toby Keith's trajectory traces the development of popular conservatism over the last 20 years. https://t.co/9wdyJAXOiO

Totally uninteresting twitter thread too fwiw, "Hey I just showed up at country music and I am going to give you a reading of exactly what a song I heard is obviously about and then extrapolate that to everything."

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 5 July 2021 18:47 (two years ago) link

yeah some bizarre stuff in that thread

i haven't listened to this or other recent examples but there seems to be a pretty dramatic proliferation of this stuff lately (tom macdonald, the aaron lewis song that just came out, etc.). i guess demand is strong for 'centrist' but implicitly fascist-aligned whines these days

dyl, Monday, 5 July 2021 22:16 (two years ago) link

It does feel like there’s something in the air. A lady in our neighborhood Facebook just posted that she was “outraged” that there weren’t more flags flying.
