i've only heard one song - in the video he's the clerk in a book shop. it sounds a bit like elliott smith if e.s. was young & healthy. it has a bit of a royal tenenbaums feeling to it too, nice little zing-go-the-strings-of-my-heart flourishes.

tweedy twee, but in a good way.

give me a break. it's scarf weather.

Aw Fritz, blaming his weakness for singerly-songwriterly stuff on the weather, God bless.

Fritz did you go to the Soundscapes in-store he did? I thought about it, then didn't, but I heard it was quite fine nonetheless.

I've sampled the album and it sounds like something that might appeal to fans of the Elliott-Rufus axis...

He did "Dead Passangers", no? I got that off a Blue Room mix on a magazine this summer. Beautiful song, I've put on mix CDs for friends with stuff from "My Computer"

phil jones (interstar), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 20:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

nah, i didn't even know about that in-store

the weather thing is true! november to march music is all about the bleakness: chelsea girls, 3rd/sister lovers, illmatic, black moon

i'm even liking radiohead

when the weather breaks all be back to the goofy greats

I've heard his album. For the first song or two, I thought it might be a classic. His vocals don't wear too well, but the songs and arrangements are quite handsome.

Kings of Convenience are terrific, IMO. The Elliott Smith comparison works for them, too, only acoustic Elliott with none of the angst, and a hypnotic slightly bossa/soft pop thing.

I've also heard Erland Oye's (KoC) upcoming solo album, which sounds like some weird late 80's artifact of post-synthpop Cheeze-Wiz.

Curt (cgould), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 21:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was about to Mention Erland Øye. You should also be sure to check out Opiate (Denmark), especially his last album. And for anyone who likes fucked up folk electronica, Goodiepal's album 'Narc Beacon' is a must.

was that a compliment or a diss, Curt? I honestly can't tell

sondre lerche's dèbut is alright; not a masterpiece yet far from horrible. it's alright enough to merit repeat listening, and some songs do stand out. and, while we are comparing (koc, elliott smith, etc.), dare i say i hear some john lennon in sondre's phrasing? "tweedy twee, but in a good way - i agree.

Jeff, Cheez-Whiz is a diss (admittedly a silly one) of that particular synth sound, mainly because I didn't care for the records it harkens back to. I'm not sure what to make of Oye's album. My gut reaction was disapointment.

Sondre Lerche is the future of music in Norway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, the suspense was killing me.

one month passes...
I'm still trying to get my head past the fact that he looks like the kid from Malcolm in the Middle, but "Faces Down" is rapidly becoming one of my favourite recent purchases. Whoever said it weakens a bit after the first few tracks was probably right - but those are such fantastic tracks, it'd be difficult not to. Maybe it *is* the cold weather, as Fritz says, but something about this makes me want to be forgiving.

I like this album to an extent. I like all things from Norway.

Liking this record quite a bit. It's cold here in Texas, too, though, so maybe that's it.

Well, that was not me, but it could have been. :-)

Margarets and Popium are both even better though, but Sondre Lerche's album is definitely a great one.

Just got 'Faces Down'.

Another one to add to the 'Patrick Wolf' pile of gosh-darn-good pretty-boy singers.

I guess Sondre was a flavor of the month here but I like his latest Two Way Monologue much better than the hardly shabby Faces Down.

So, how's the new album? I find the cover a bit off-putting, personally...

Davey D (Dave Depper), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 21:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Haven't been able to hear it yet, but I dislike the fact that he has stopped working with H.P. Gundersen. Gundersen's production was part of what made the first two albums so great.

New one sounds great, if not very 2004.
