Gotta go Broadcast but really should listen to the Omar S, he's eluded me all these years.

unusually high number of "this was a big deal at the time but feels quaint now" ones on this list

ciderpress, Sunday, 25 February 2024 15:53 (two months ago) link

MIA, LCD, Konono, and Aerial are the ones I really listened to at the time. Came to that Low album later. Weirdly I listened to Aerial with very little context, aside from knowing that Kate Bush was a big deal (my gf at the time was a big fan).

Arular still holds up imo.

The quiet ILM Broadcast massif will see them triumph in this poll, again. Quite right.

I was completely unaware that there was a second Woodbine; thank you, will investigate.

Voted Silver Jews… love that one

some great albums here, but like the name says aerial absolutely soars over them, as it is in fact one of the best albums ever made

The Embassy album kicks ass btw - part of that wave of Sweden dance pop that was thriving at the time

The Life Pursuit is so synonymous with 2006 that I had to check, and yes, it came out early 06

There's a lot to like but very little to outright love here. A lot of these bands had either just made or were about to make better albums - Malkmus, Daft Punk, Boards of Canada - all acts I love dearly, but these are some of their least lovable records

I'm tempted to vote for Feels - felt really bold at the time, but in retrospect it was the start of Animal Collective stepping into "annoying noises for the sake of it" territory that they'd continue with for quite a while. Still, it's a decent listen so let's go with that

This is easily my favourite year of the decade for albums. Broadcast takes this as it's my favourite of the decade but I was really tempted to give Art Brut a vote as no-one else will. I still love that album. Antony & The Johnsons, The Clientele, Saint Etienne, Robyn and Kate Bush are all up there too.

Rachel Stevens, Girls Aloud, Doves, Erasure and Ladytron are a few others I would have included. Such a great year.

Arular is good, but I can't bring myself to vote for MIA in this day and age.

LCD has bangers, but it doesn't feel like a solid album, rather a compilation with a bonus disc or something

I enjoyed Vitalic's Poney as much as the next Ilxor, but the album was hit and miss

I have lived so deep inside A River Ain’t Too Much to Love for so long that I can’t not vote for it, even though there are other titans that I may hold in higher esteem on this list

Good year. I played LCD Soundsystem the most back then and quite a bit in recent months after seeing them last fall. Will probably vote for them.

Sufjan Stevens, New Pornographers, Sleater-Kinney, MIA, Art Brut, he-who-shall-remain-nameless, even the Go-Betweens all put out favorites at the time, maybe even the best albums they've ever done (or in the cast of the Go-Betweens, their best from their later years when McLennan and Forster reunited).

Spent a weeklong 2005 road trip with Silent Alarm playing on repeat. Haven’t had many similar immersive experiences since, so of the list, that one.
