i likes me some:

pita - 7 tons, get out
fennesz - hotel paral.lel
goem - dertig cm
the first fennoberg thing

most of the things i think are my favorite mego releases actually seem to be on touch or that shitheel jim o'rourke's label.

fuck tom smith and ohne as well - why mego bothered to put his shit out after years of him tossing snipes at them i'll never know. but as long as _the wire_ is finally paying attention to him, i reckon he doesn't care.

your null fame (yournullfame), Monday, 2 December 2002 14:56 (10 years ago) Permalink

Oh, I just like Ohne for the music, not the background issues. It's not just Tom Smith's project, either.

hstencil, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 15:14 (10 years ago) Permalink

I really really like "Endless Summer" although I might not be yer typical Mego customer...

but I do have "Hotel Paral.lel" and found it interesting, but truth be told, I only listened to it all the way through once. "Endless Summer" on the other hand is really beautiful.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 18:50 (10 years ago) Permalink

song #3 (untitled) on pita's get out is my favorite Mego song.

"aus" by fennesz (one of the last songs on hotel paral.lel) is really amazing, as good as anything on endless summer... i think the jim o'rourke song "eureka" was influenced by this a little bit.

showroom dummies is pretty wild, "seven tons revisited" (as performed by pita/fennesz), the ilpo vaisanen record is great, the fennesz plays 7", the potuznik amore motore (...autobahn) from a few years ago would probably be right up the alley of any mike ink/kompakt fans who are looking backward, both the fenn o'berg records are pop-glitch click/cut exercises in live-editing funnnnnn. that's all i can think of off the top of my head, will probably add more when i'm actually in the same zip code as my music. yeah, that new kevin drumm record is really wild, although i like the triangles cd better which he may or may not have been involved with.

gygax!, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 19:27 (10 years ago) Permalink

Triangles is just Kevin. Leif Elggren just did that one drawing, he didn't make any of the music.

hstencil, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 19:29 (10 years ago) Permalink

but he's never publically associated with the project, has he? i thought it was supposed to be one of those mystery records.

gygax!, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 19:34 (10 years ago) Permalink

The only credits of anything on the record are art credits for Kevin and Leif. I assumed they did the music together too, but then I asked Kevin, and he said that he did all of the music by himself. I'm sure if he wanted it to be a total secret, the art credits wouldn't have been on there.

what label is farmers manual "fsck" on ? - i can't remember - it is king of stuff - i always kinda think of them as the trumans water of laptops (that's a good thing). also i think it's on touch but cd_slopper's "saskiewoczie" (sp?) is 2 farmers people and so worrying in its intent / utility that i LOVE it. also check out DAVE PHILLIPS "IIII" which you can get from www.mdos.at if nowhere else (he is one of ohne - ohne fkn ROCK!) - very very creepy and funny too

hstencil, Wednesday, 4 December 2002 19:09 (10 years ago) Permalink

ohne do not rock. they suck. it's similar, though.

dave phillips is aiight, though - he was in FEAR OF GOD, and i think something to do with runzelstirn & gurglestock and/or the schimpfluch collective?

your null fame (yournullfame), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 20:04 (10 years ago) Permalink

Do you want to bother explaining why you think Ohne suck? I, for one, am curious.

hstencil, Wednesday, 4 December 2002 20:30 (10 years ago) Permalink

i'll come clean and admit it's because i think tom smith is an asshole and probably won't ever give a fair shake to anything he's involved in. plus TLASILA sucked in epic fashion.

your null fame (yournullfame), Thursday, 5 December 2002 02:27 (10 years ago) Permalink

Shitheel or not, O'Rourke's 'I Am Happy And I'm Singing...' Mego alb is v. pretty and clever - I much prefer it to the two FennO'Berg discs.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Thursday, 5 December 2002 08:39 (10 years ago) Permalink

"TLASILA sucked in epic fashion" well i spose you could say that - maybe it's why i love those discs/tapes SO much. was not the sucking that they did kinda on purpose? tom smith may be an arse but he to me is an entertaining arse w/ a damn sight more original ideas than most arses out ther.

bob snoom, Thursday, 5 December 2002 13:47 (10 years ago) Permalink

plus TLASILA sucked in epic fashion.

Whatever you say, champ.

hstencil, Thursday, 5 December 2002 15:11 (10 years ago) Permalink

ah, delicious condescension!

all the TLASILA stuff i've heard sounded like moronic ranting through an answering machine with someone practicing the bass in the background. "classic."

your null fame (yournullfame), Thursday, 5 December 2002 17:20 (10 years ago) Permalink

it seems you have a pretty strong opinion on Tom Smith, and that's fine, but in the case of Ohne (which isn't really his band, but something he's involved in) I think that opinion kinda trumps any real analysis of it on your part.

The only TLASILA thing I have is the farewell double, The Wigmaker, and it sounds kinda like your description, and yeah, I think that's a good thing. At least it's more interesting to me than, say, J-Lo singing about how she's still "down" with people from the Bronx or something.

hstencil, Thursday, 5 December 2002 17:24 (10 years ago) Permalink

when compiling links last night for my year end choices, i noticed that get down is available for DL albeit at very low kbps (i think in the 32 range)... so for you CD/MP3 types, check out www.mego.at

gygax!, Thursday, 5 December 2002 17:32 (10 years ago) Permalink

i thought i had made that clear - i don't claim to be making a "real analysis" of ohne, but i've heard it and it sucks. note the grain of salt.

interestingly, i have a friend who loves TLASILA and even occasionally thinks he's a friend of smith's and he says the ohne album is trumped by tart's "radio orange" (on swill radio), which is a quite enjoyable album.

i think it's funny that people actually take "the wigmaker" seriously; if that's five years of work, it's five years wasted.

Sheer Hellish Miasma is arguably the strong Kevin Drumm release IMHO, though far from typical of his output. The new Hecker ablum is pretty fabulous.

Is anyone tempted by the Japanese version of Noriko Tujiko's last album recently released by Digital Narcis with the extra CD?

i think fennesz is not so impressive for his methods, which is so commonly where the judgement of idm(orwhateveryoucallit) erupts from... but more that the music fennesz makes is quite appealing from a melodic sense.

i connect to his stuff in my gutt more than my head is all.

hotel paral.el is one of the more amazing records in recent memory, and i think that's where all of the initial excitement comes from. his big crossover with endless summer sounded like fluff to me, and i've pretty much ignored him since. 'venice' does have some nice cuts on it, especially the opening 'rivers of sand' and a few others, but nothing comes close to the visceral impact and technological innovation of hotel paral.lel

Jena (JenaP), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:53 (7 years ago) Permalink

seriously, those two Cindytalk albums are some of the best music on Mego. hypnotic, emotional noise. the recent split w/ Robert Hampson is pretty smart as well, all wind-clattered sheet metal and organic drones

re kevin drumm his album w/ daniel menche (mego 88) has been my soundtrack to the uk election aftermath

not mego but menche has a tape out on tapeworm called 'raw fall' that i think youd really vibe - mostly unprocessed field recordings of waterfalls & its powerful and mesmerizing. he also has a related lp out called 'kataract' thats on editions mego thats more processed and 'constructed' but i think 'raw fall' is superior

That track "Viennese Tragedy" is so-called because it was recorded live at this swanky jazz club in Vienna where Fenn O'Berg were booked for some reason. About 10 people showed up.

well, i'll rep for some o those "rehberg & bauer"s, which still hold up - i actually LIKE them, but everything in his own name seems to me devoid of ingenuity & sub-bruce gilbert "my first zoom sampletrack" exercises (although i might hazard a guess they're max/msp supercollider or what have you) obvious systems & methods, & not at all transportative, revelatory or moving (even in a cold, paranoid machine type of way). it's only my take. don't matter any.

In addition to being handsome and French, Schaeffer (as I understand it) helped pioneer the highly exact science of making bumping, clubby jams out of steam engine samples. In other words, the Oneohtrix Point Never dude probably likes him a lot, so you’re fucking nobody if you don’t too. The second record Recollection GRM has announced so far is by Guy Reibel, who, for all intents and purposes is the same guy as Pierre Schaeffer, except with a much much shorter Wikipedia page.
