"I Want It That Way": Uh... yeah.

I haven't posted anything that makes me look like a belligerent asshole in a while, so I might as well get this out of my system: The Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way" is shit.

I've heard this song at least two or three times in the last week. How so? Well, one of my coworkers in the mailroom I am working at likes to keep the radio tuned to the "LITE FM" station, one of those deals that specializes primarily in solo Phil Collins and Lionel Richie and "Walking in Memphis". And damn if Los Backstreets didn't fit in perfectly - inoffensive, bloodless, boring, no liveliness to it whatsoever, cliched, dated -- if I'd heard it for the first time with no awareness of who the artist was and in the context of this very radio station, which specializes primarily in '80s/early '90s material, I'd've sworn it was recorded in 1992.

Yeah yeah blah blah "HE HATES POP! KILL HIM!" No. This is coming from a gradually reforming "The Neptunes are genius and that new Timberlake track is pretty swank" ex-rockist who has problems with the way boyband stuff is marketed but for the most part judges the actual music itself the same way everything else is judged ("Does it sound like crap? No? Good."). I admitted to liking a fucking Loverboy song two weeks ago; "indie guilt" is not an issue here. I just have no idea how everyone from Rob Sheffield to Robert Christgau to the first person who barges in this thread and calls me an indie twat can listen to this warmed-over arglebargle that sounds to these ears like a halfassed Boyz II Men b-side and say "you know, that is easily one of the best singles of the 1990s".

Then again, maybe I just hate it because Burger King gives me horrendous indigestion.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Friday, 29 November 2002 04:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, so how can you support a band that's publically endorsed them?

Fuck, I just remembered the Simpsons are shilling them too. Then again, the Simpsons have FELL OFF. Back when they were good their tie-ins were with Subway.

On that tip, I'm listening to the new J.Lo right now, and the best thing I can think to say about it is that it's immensely and immediately forgettable.
Hey, that value menu sourdough burger is for shit. I didn't expect it to be giant, but I also expected it to be bigger than a Canadian nickel.
Though it's better off small, cuz, like I said, it's for shit.

I really like that song, m'self, though now I feel a little guilty about it -- what I like about it is that it fits in nicely on Lite FM stations. Because I love Lite FM stations. Oh yes I do.

Well, I think it's a really terrific song ! but I'm not given to ad hominem attacks on those who don't agree with me, partic in matters of taste. Wow Nate, why is whether or not you like it so wound up with feeling belligerent ? I mean why worry, someone who's gonna call you an asshole for not liking a pop song, that person's the one w/the anger management issue.

daria g, Friday, 29 November 2002 05:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

The song prompts more (ironic) indie girl singalongs then most any I know = it is great.

Does it matter?

bnw (bnw), Friday, 29 November 2002 06:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

i don't get what's wrong with the song.

but you do have a point about 'Lite FM'. continuous background 'Lite FM' music can make you go crazy, as proven by science. when i worked in a schizophrenia research lab, my co-workers insisted on playing 'Lite FM' all day. the idea, i guess, was that it was inobtrusive and soothing (read: oppressive and maddening) background noise, good music to slice brains and kill rats to. but after 8-10 hours of continuous 'smooth smooth sounds' each day, The Fear starts to set in.

geeta (geeta), Friday, 29 November 2002 06:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't buy prefabricated pop... I listen to it on the radio or at the bowling alley or MTV etc. I used to steal em off Napster/Audiogalaxy, but I gave that whole business up.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 29 November 2002 06:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

define "prefabricated"

geeta (geeta), Friday, 29 November 2002 06:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't have any money.. ! So no, I did not give $$ to Backstreets et al, I haven't bought a CD in months.. er, I do have a boyband mix cd sitting around that was made my my friend's brother who is in the air force & is a huge boyband fan, I don't understand the kid at all.
You guys say 'prefabricated' like it's a dirty word ! I used to like lots of indie rock, but most of that happened because I only listened to indie rock, thereby lowering my standards to the point that anything even remotely interesting like the first song off of June of 44's second album ('Shadow Pugilist'?) sounded like a massive stroke of genius compared to all the other tuneless plodding crapsh!t indie rock bands.

Nate, I've been on ILM a bit, am usually too busy w/school stuff to post much, but it's fall break now. thanks tho.

daria g, Friday, 29 November 2002 07:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

I personally like my radio pop to be prefabricated because I don't trust vapid teenagers to write good pop music. Thank heaven for Babyface and Diane Warren and whoever else it is that writes the songs that Britney/etc sing.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 29 November 2002 08:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

Unlike at least Ned I think that "Shape Of My Heart" beats "I Want It That Way" - the former sometimes strikes me as all this useless anthemia, whereas the latter tiptoes the tightrope between cheese and pathos perfectly.

They're both great though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 29 November 2002 08:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

I wan't it that way SUCKS! There can be no doubt about that. I mean, 'Backstreet's Back' was a decent rip-off of a Dr. Dre moog bass track, and anyone who don't like Britney's 'Baby One More Time' song don't appreciate quality pop in my opinion. But '...That Way' SUCKS, SUCKS, SUCKS! The melody is all daft cliché, berieved of dynamics and that little, slightly surprising twist that tickles your pop sensibility. It's like an american remake of a french film - all subtleness and charm lost.

Jay K (Jay K), Friday, 29 November 2002 09:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

'i want it that way' is lovely but i agree with tim, 'shape of my heart' is better.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 29 November 2002 09:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Shape of My Heart" is better yeah. I think we had a thread on IWITW before. It kind of turned into the American "Back For Good" - hey I don't like boybands but this is CLASSY POP MAN - and like "BFG" it is good but not that good. I used to think BFG's own classiness was stifling it but that was a knee-jerk anti-songwriting thing probably. Now I think the problem with both is that the immaculate (or "inert" if you don't like this stuff) obvious hit-ness of the songs works against the supposed vulnerability of the lyrics (which in "I Want..."'s case are pretty rub anyway).

Helltime's question is interesting. My policy was generally to download the tracks I wanted and buy CDs second-hand, and then spend my money on CDs which came out on labels I thought needed it more. A rise in disposable income though has meant I end up now buying most stuff that interests me - I bought the Sugababes, Timberlake and Holly Valance albums new, for example. I usually download key tracks first where possible and apply a "3 good tracks = album worth checking out" rule of thumb.

I think Nate's self-conscious characterisation of ILM as the pop-lover's haven is sadly out of date, by the way. :(

The important thing about this thread which no one has yet adequately explored is the fact that the BK sourdough burger is really just generic burger stuff on toasted slices of bread, the kind of "burgers" you would find at a cheap-ass picnic or something like that. And they certainly could have used 64 slices of American cheese to zip 'em up.

Good point - I mean, I like "Get Free". I suppose the fact that IWITW is considered such an amazing song by so many knowledgeable people who otherwise disdain derivative and/or "dated" music just seems a bit confusing. But really, the "it sounds like 1992" is the least of my problems.

I think that the ruling cognoscenti of rockwrite will often just randomly champion something they clearly don't get just to stay "in touch".
Sleater-Kinney, Eminem, and of course BSB are all prime eg's of such (hey, why is it BSB, Backstreet is just one word, it should be BB).

But back to the back to the beat y'all...McDo's Quarter Pounder: izzat shit boiled or what?

E-to-the-Izzay, Friday, 29 November 2002 19:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

ARGH. I will go to my grave saying that this is the most overrated song of the past six years. DOES NOT STICK IN MEMORY FOR ME = fails in the Nediverse. Glad you all like it, though!

"Shape of My Heart," please. I seem to remember a complaint or two that it reminded people of Sting -- or rather, maybe it was praise in that it was Sting but good, so if that's the point of comparison, then I just think of it as Sting without the drama and passion (which admittedly is like saying Kraftwerk without the explosive vocal arpeggios).

I'll take "Lucky" over "I Want It That Way" in the end, though "I Want It That Way" renders the entire N'Sync song catalog as the annoying idiocy it is. Exception: that remix of "The Call" is miles better than anything Justin's put out on his own.

Yeah, the "ruling cognoscenti" were all over "I Want it that Way" because they wanted to prove to Village Voice readers how "in touch" they were. Far out.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 29 November 2002 22:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

Baby One More Time is REALLY not that good a song. I heard it again recently, and the production just sounded horribly dated. Besides, Oops = MUCH better song anyway.

kate, Friday, 29 November 2002 22:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

Seconding Kate there. Dan made the argument that they're both the same song, but one actually digs in deep (I think's the way the chorus just sorta, you know, slinks) where the earlier one does not.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 November 2002 22:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

The bass sound on Oops is much, much dirtier, hence why it is so much more wonderful. The bass sound on Baby One More Time is too crystaline and pristine.

"Backstreet's Back" is an abomination and, in jr. high, was the song that embodied every guy's intense hatred for that band. Oft parodied, especially the "alright!" yelp. I really don't think this song has any redeeming qualities, but maybe that's only because I hate fun and don't understand things like "mad bass breaks".

Once we were at karaoke and it was down to the last song of the night. A business guy had put down "The Drugs Don't Work" by the Verve and was all ready to sing it when the karaoke lady decided it was too much of a downer to end on so why didn't he do the next song they had cued up...which was "Backstreet's Back", requested by a bunch of us. We all sang backup to the poor man who looked fantastically uncomfortable, but the song was marvellous fun to sing -the real reason I venture that it was 'parodied' so much in Jr High John.

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 30 November 2002 10:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think we had a thread on IWITW before. It kind of turned into the American "Back For Good" - hey I don't like boybands but this is CLASSY POP MAN - and like "BFG" it is good but not that good.

Grrrr. I try my best to give up on my rockist ways, but everytime I actually like a Pop song, ILM informs me that it's not the real deal! First I fall in love with the current Neptunes-produced brand of Chartpop and get told that it's just a watered down version of the current Neptunes-produced brand of Hip-Hop; then I remember that two of my previous "guilty pleasures" were these two songs and proceed to gleefully turn them into proud pleasures, and now this!!!! What does a poor Elvis Costello fan have to do to belong, damnit?

Daniel don't worry it's the 'real deal' alright!! My beef was only with people who ONLY liked Back For Good or IWITW, especially the latter cos it's really not that removed from lots of other Backstreet songs.

"My beef was only with people who ONLY liked Back For Good or IWITW, especially the latter cos it's really not that removed from lots of other Backstreet songs."

Surely you wouldn't say the same about "Shape of My Heart"? A few months ago I heard it on the radio and it led to me downloading all their "greatest hits" tracks, but none of them are in the same league. (Although I think IWITW and a couple others distinguish themselves from the rest.)

As for "Backstreet's Back", I'm not in denial at all Tom- I just can't imagine it being any fun except in an ironic way, and I'm not generally a fan of liking songs for ironic reasons. "The Call" on the other hand is pretty good by itself.

People! Open-ended meanings = good. BSB dance trax gr8 but are primarily showcase for Swedish geezers & don't allow Boys to show personalities (stop laughing) like ballads do."Shape of My Heart" sounds like Chicago - overproduced into a ball of lacquer, structurally formulaic with a crap key change to boot - I'd trade all that album for "As Long As You Love Me". Ultimate all-powerfulness of IWITW shown beyond doubt when you sing it karaoke - melody all-enveloping, gain respect for Boys' singing - smoothness with which that high B on the key change is hit is unbelievable (shows up soullessness of "Shape"'s) - probably thanks to Max M. "Shape" produced by faceless machine, IWITW produced by mega-awesome supersonic faceless machine!
