Only the new Sarah that is an all-conquering multimedia behemoth, at once record label, club, and gig promoter?

The stars of track and field are beautiful people.

, Thursday, 28 November 2002 13:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

arent track and field a bit more 'rock' though, do they have any good records yet?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 28 November 2002 14:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

Doesn't Track and Field Suck Big Hairy Moose Cock? ;-)

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 28 November 2002 15:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

no, because sarah was a PUNK label.

kieron, Thursday, 28 November 2002 15:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

actually, Sarah was more of a hiphop label. They played the real sounds of the streets.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 28 November 2002 16:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

are any of those T&F bands any good? you know, Kicker, the Tyde, Salon (?), Tompaulin, Dressy Bessy etc.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 28 November 2002 17:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

kicker is excellent almost soulful, great pop with an excellent singer, saloon is very good too and the fact that they sound a lot like yo la tengo on the album doesn't seem to bother me. track and field really have a brand identity like sarah did but they attract the same sort of fans. screen prints also released a beautiful record on the label. dressy bessy is awful(familiarity breeds contempt), so is the tyde which is dad rock on sedatives.

keith (keithmcl), Thursday, 28 November 2002 19:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

I fear I am the only of Montreal liker in the whole wide world...

It's Not Easy Being Twee.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 28 November 2002 19:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Har har har har har har har, yes, they are actually. And they should be bloody proud of it.

The Saloon album was probably one of the best dronepop offerings of the past year. Stereolab meets the Sundays, yes please, more of this!

(BTW, I ended up giving the T&F Suck Big Hairy Moosecock to Steven Drew - he absolutely LOVED it.)

kate, Thursday, 28 November 2002 19:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

i love of montreal but i never think of them as a track and field band.

keith (keithmcl), Thursday, 28 November 2002 19:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

i know its statin the bleedin obvious, but isnt Shinkansen the new Sarah?

Wyndham Earl, Friday, 29 November 2002 06:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Seconded, no diggedy. Wonderful stuff. Must say tho, the rest of the T&F output I can really take or leave, and mostly leave - identikit pointlessly noisy guff.

Charlie (Charlie), Friday, 29 November 2002 06:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

Cripes. T&F are FAR from the new Sarah. They're lame, unpronounced, and pretentious to boot. Bands on their label don't break any barriers; suffice to say I'd also rather give the title to Shinkansen or, well, any other. Damn well give it to Elefant or suchlike. I'm not saying their bands are awful, mind, yet what I am saying is that T&F cannot be likened to Sarah in their actions or possiblities of influence or attitude; this isn't new music from fey quiet souls who need to be heard. Not REALLY. It is indeed bereft of the punk aspects that made Sarah so effective. T&F are simply clutching at the heels of the highly regarded Sarah Records.

Bella, Sunday, 1 December 2002 16:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

what barriers did sarah break? or did the field mice invent dance music?

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 1 December 2002 18:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

They further broke the barrier to the public. T&F are just stepping through an open door.

Bella, Sunday, 1 December 2002 18:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Flounces off Ned Styleee to Harmelodia ridddums"

There's a vision.

This Saloon band sounds interesting...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 1 December 2002 19:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

further broke what barrier? sad wimpy music was ubiquitous even before sarah.

saloon needs to compile their singles on a cd now, very different to the album more upbeat.

track and field are fine for what they are, they are filling a void as most fey music is released on non-uk labels at the moment.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 1 December 2002 20:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

hardly makes them the new Sarah though..

Nico, Sunday, 1 December 2002 21:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Matinee is the new Sarah. Shinkansen are fucking rubbish these days and Matt Haynes should give it a rest. It's obvious Clare was the one with the decent taste.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 1 December 2002 22:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

oh and Track and Field are the new Domino, except for Drag City read Kindercore.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 1 December 2002 22:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

oh what track and field do is license product from kindercore, so it's obvious that they are the new kindercore.

saloon - worthwhile though i enjoy broadcast more. the tyde, licensed from orange sky, is cool, though they are now signed to rough trade. homescience has a ramshackle feel to it which i enjoy but it's hard to go through that album in one go. kicker are blah.

doom-e, Sunday, 1 December 2002 22:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

homescience wish they were from athens. dreadful. broadcast are miles better than saloon but that doesn't keep saloon from being very nice. kicker are fantastic actually and really don't fit on the label as they have a bit of soul in them. haven't heard the loves yet, what are they like?

i like most of what shinkansen has released minus the monograph connected bands and tompot blenny once they decided they needed a drummer.

the tyde is as bad as beachwood sparks which is pretty glaringly awful. they should have been on poptones.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 1 December 2002 23:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

ah yes a bit of soul

bob zemko (bob), Monday, 2 December 2002 10:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

i don't get yer comment about saloon - could you decode? Wrong about the tyde, by the way adn i dig the homescience crazy ramshackle sound. kicker are awful. just awful.

doom-e, Monday, 2 December 2002 15:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

people say saloon are quite good, but if they're like a less good broadcast then perhaps i wouldnt like? broadcast are ok, but i never get the urge to play them. but then someone says stereolab/the sundays and that makes me interested again.

gareth (gareth), Monday, 2 December 2002 15:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

the Tyde are horrible; clueless, lumpen Gram-worship, without a single idea of their own. The singer actually changes his voice between songs to be a bit more dylan then lawrence then mcguinn. yuck.

Screen Prints on the other hand make cinematic 4 track symphonies recorded on the stairwells of a mental hospital with tunes approaching Jimmy Webb-style freshness and beauty. What a grim illustration of the current musical climate when the Tyde get a Rough Trade deal and the Screen prints are currently without a label.

Really? I just hear third rate BMX Bandits whilst I hear the world in The Tyde.

doom-e, Monday, 2 December 2002 17:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've tried hard with the Tyde (listened to their records and seen them 3 times). They're OK, but I can't get over the feeling that they've re-cast Felt as a good-time Paisley Underground act. That is to say, they've removed that obsession with detail and perverse madness which made Felt fascinating. What's left just doesn't get me going. It's a shame because I'd really like to like them.

I bought a Screen Prints record and it was hopeless. People whose taste I respect keep telling me to try the LP but I'm very reluctant.

As for the main question, T&F don't remind me of Sarah in any way whatsoever.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 2 December 2002 17:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

i play the screen prints when i want to feel like i was a hipster from 1984 digging those crazy c90 sounds.

doom-e, Monday, 2 December 2002 17:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

the screen prints CD is great. way better than the Tyde and nothing like the bmx bandits. more along the lines of the clientele if you ask me, maybe a bit more twee-pop sounding.

g (graysonlane), Monday, 2 December 2002 19:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

Track & Field is a fabulous way to spend an evening. Sarah was a fabulous way to spend 6 years.

Oi! I said no soundbites!

Difference between Matinee & shinkansen: Shinkansen isn't trying to be the new Sarah. Unfortunately, it isn't trying to be anything else either.

harveyw, Monday, 2 December 2002 21:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

Or fortunately, depending on how you view these things....

harveyw, Monday, 2 December 2002 21:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Loves - adored Little Girl Blues, not hugely sure about the rest of their output. But Little Girl Blues... oh yes.

It's guitar pop. Then again, being on T&F, that's a bit obvious...

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 2 December 2002 22:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

Screen Prints are ace!! Miles fucking better than the Tyde, even though I like the Tyde a lot more than most round here it seems.

Kicker, Homescience, the Loves = all very very ace. I like the Saloon album a tremendous amount but I can't help feeling that its strengths lie in Andrew Prinz' involvement..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 00:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

some people buy a lot of records. i love how much of the T&F stuff people are familiar with, even those people who think T&F stuff is all rubbish.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 10:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

four years pass...

I was fucking about amazon.co.uk and saw some new Projects cd, it was only 2 pounds something or other. Is it any good? Has some Broadcast remix or some shit on it. I loved the Projects more than any Saloon cd. I also ordered the last Tompaulin cd cause it was only a pound :).

svend, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 05:39 (sixteen years ago) link

Going through some box I have a Tompaulin on Earworm 7 inch I never played :(.

svend, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 05:41 (sixteen years ago) link

really? that's relatively rare, great record too. all the tracks are on the t&f comp of their singles i think

t&f have been pretty boring as a label for a little while, although it was good to see them put out the mahogany record for the UK

electricsound, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 05:49 (sixteen years ago) link

matinee still the best contender for new sarah. the names of most of the new bands they're putting out soon crack me up. bubblegum lemonade??

electricsound, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 05:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Matinee bands all sound exactly the same. Like they all record in the same room ... oh well :)

svend, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 05:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Found my receipt for the Earworm Tompaulin - 2 pounds :).

if you're trolling then whatever, but if you're serious i think you really haven't heard that many of them. sure, it's all "indie", but i don't see much more than that to link say tender trap with the lucksmiths

electricsound, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 05:58 (sixteen years ago) link

I wasn't trolling at all. i seriously think that. Look I know where your coming from Tugboat/Library and I know where Matinee is coming from. I just mean they seriously sound similar to me. I still buy them cause I am over 30 and buy cds.

svend, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 06:22 (sixteen years ago) link

err I meant that part as a joke...........

svend, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 06:24 (sixteen years ago) link

T&F put out records by Herman Dune, which is a very good thing in my book (like them more than any Sarah band)

Joan Vich Montaner, Thursday, 29 November 2007 00:04 (sixteen years ago) link

ok fair enough xpost.. i mean, there's a similar aesthetic to be sure, but i've never found myself getting the bands mixed up (although with some of the newer ones this is becoming an issue)

electricsound, Thursday, 29 November 2007 00:06 (sixteen years ago) link

> new Projects cd... Has some Broadcast remix or some shit on it.

this remix is lovely (if it's the one i'm thinking of). is available on bleep.com if you want to listen. (is very duophonic era sounding)
