Love it very much. It's its own little world. Not even the sax can kill that song for me.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 25 November 2002 19:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

Never knew who sang it or what it was called until 2000 when someone earnestly described it to me. So when I asked for an mp3 and heard the sax break I went, "Oh, THAT song!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 November 2002 19:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ned, you're so "complicated." And "racial." And "American."

Can someone "act American?" Besides Nicole Kidman sans Aussie accent, of course.

For all you Blockbusters fans out there, the session musician who did the sax on 'Baker Street' was none other than Bob Holnes.

Wasn't that a joke that appeared in the NME's Thrill's section in the early 90's, and then started to crop up everywhere is fact? (Much like the report that Billie Piper was due to appear in a theatrical adaptation of the story of Joan Of Arc, which then appeared in newspapers)

Matthew (faster), Monday, 25 November 2002 19:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Blimey, you're right! I've been living a lie! Don't rememeber the Thrils piece though, but whoever told me this "nugget" was obviously taken in.

Raf Ravenscroft also did the sax on that Hazel O'Connor song ('you drink your coffee'..etc etc...can't recall the title)

This song and "Le Freak" were blowing up AM radio when I was in 6th and 7th grade. My musical tastes can be located somewhere directly between the two.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Monday, 25 November 2002 21:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Gerry Rafferty, Mr. Baker Street himself, actually produced the original "Shoot Out the Lights" sessions for Richard & Linda Thompson. (They ultimately nixed the recordings.) In turn, R&L provide backing vocals on "Night Owl."

I used to own both "Night Owl" and "Snakes and Ladders" when I was 13. Both had good songs, I recall.

"baker st." is one of those songs where everyone remembers the chorus but never really remembers the more intricate verses.. kinda like beach boy's "good vibrations" (to non beach boys fans that is). what sets "baker st." apart is that very memorable chorus has NO WURDS!

Marxism Goes Better With Coke (Charles McCain), Friday, 14 October 2005 00:43 (eighteen years ago) link

It was definitely "crack." Always thought that a little bit weird, but I do like the Foo version, one of the last decent things they put out. Their cover of "Down in the Park" is also IMO unreasonably maligned - it's fun.

The substitution of "crack" for "booze" is painfully affected.

I remember there was a Thrills piece that alleged that Robbie Williams was to make a double concept album called "The Prison" that was to have a a 14 minute monologue about the life of Rudolf Hess. Sadly that wasn't true either.

Weird thing about Baker Street is it seems to follow DBC Pierre's concept of the "fate song". It always seems to pipe over the radio when I'm

a)on my own
b)feeling vaguely melancholy, and
c)in a smoky pub or otherwise atmospheric location that perfectly suits the sax intro.

Right Down The Line is great, too, except for that awkward part where I think he's trying to squeeze the lyric ''You've been as constant as the Northern Star (the brightest star that shines),'' into too short a period of time in the song. So I always hear it as ''You've been as const as the Northern Star.'' Otherwise, aces.

The musician behind one of the most recognisable saxophone solos - on Gerry Rafferty's hit Baker Street - has died.

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-devon-29700432

Raphael Ravenscroft, 60, who found fame almost overnight following the release of the 1978 track, died following a suspected heart attack early on Sunday.

He was reportedly paid only £27 for the session with a cheque that bounced while the song is said to have earned Rafferty £80,000 a year in royalties.

In a radio interview in 2011, Ravenscroft said the song annoyed him.

"I'm irritated because it's out of tune," he said.
