My favourite band from when I was 13.

Seventh Son of a Seventh Son was the third album I ever got, I remember drawing pictures of Eddie in art class, religiously reading the lyrics and playing air guitar, writing their name on my bag, my first band t-shirt, buying metal hammer, and saving up my pocket money to buy their back catalogue, my mum even got me "the Adventures of Lord Iffy Boatrace for Christmas" I read it in a day...

i have this great tape i found at the salvation ary called the Very Best of Iron Maiden. the cover has them in the desert like on mopeds or something (powerslave pics??) and the tracklisting kicks so much ass. it must be a bootleg because i cant find any info on the label or the ctlg number ANYwhere on the net. it has LIVE Killer's era trax from a pub or something! anyway steve harris and niko mcbrain are the best rythym section EVER.

yeah Steve Harris is great, the songs he wrote are the ones when you can really hear the click click metal bass.

I slept on Heavy Metal for a long time, to busy being a punk I guess. Iron Maiden were a fantastic band. They never made an out & out bad record. The Dual guitars the thumping bass, hot damn! I love that goofy comic book sense of fun that Maiden had. Just really great simple rock & roll.

"Aces High" is the single greatest song to sing at the top lungs at 3am in your underwear...

"The Trooper" is their masterpiece though.

I agree with Chaki. "Bring your Daughter to the Slaughter" was when the cracks started to appear, but I was really happy that it got to number one.

iron maiden approved our record contract for us. this is actually a true story! our bassist's husband used to work for them, and they checked it out for us as a favour. he gets xmas cards from them and everything. a very eddie christmas, etc.

Piece of Mind and Powerslave are straight up classic. They always had such great production too, it still sounds very modern, especially for being done in the middle of the fucking 80s.

Also Brave New World is probably the best 'comeback' album by a metal band ever.

Jesus H. Christ on the Powerslave drop. The song itself is so classic it hurts. Two Minutes to Midnight tho. And I also like on the live version of Fear of the Dark when the band bring it down and Bruce sings "Fear of the Dark" then says to the hordes beneath him "you", and they roar out "Fear of the Dark" and he says "yes," all dark and mysterious like. Yes? Yes??? Hahahahahahahaha. What the fuck is that supposed to mean? Sorry. For some reason that really tickles my toes.

My friend in Gr 5 was obsessed with them. His drawings of Eddie were all over his wall. For art class projects he'd draw desolate landscapes with barren trees and skeletons on the ground with Eddie stalking the ruins. My Bon Jovi-loving self was a little intimidated by their name and image and reputation at first but then I heard them and realized that they were just all about pretty melodies. I think "The Wasted Years" was my favourite or one of them at the time. "Powerslave" too (Keith did an air band to that one.) To listen to them now you have to overlook how squeaky clean and light and prancey everything sounds and just listen for the melodies. "Hallowed Be Thy Name" and "Flight Of Icarus" are excellent.

There's a pretty acoustic cover of The Number of The Beast on the soundtrack to 'Spun' -- by, I think, that guy from the Smashing Pumpkins. It's a total rip-off of what mark Kozelek did with that AC/DC covers album, but it's still neat.

Listening to A Matter of Life and Death right now. Wow, people! Brave New World was great in its own way, but this sounds a lot more like mid-'80s Maiden. I'm honestly thrilled by it.

As mentioned in the rolling metal thread, their five Western Canadian dates all sold out within a couple hours today...60,000 tickets. The Calgary pre-sale outsold the one for MSG. We've missed them a lot out here. Can't wait for June 8th!!!

i got "the early years" a 2-dvd thing from netflix in the mail yesterday and watched 30 min of concert footage from a gig in late '80 or '81 (copyright) from a place called 'rainbow'? where they played iron maiden the song. it was paul di'anno, adrian smith and clive burr with dave murray and steve harris. they looked so much like fuckin spinal tap! my mouth was open when i wasn't head-banging. so awesome! can't wait to see the rest of this thing

That guy could pull off drum fills like no other. I remain a big fan of Nicko's, but Clive really did bring a lot of personality to those early Maiden songs.

Yeah Nicko is terrific. I do think there was something special about Clive's drumming though (possibly sheer nostalgia for him talking but I'd like to think not) - I feel like he helped to set the speed and the punk feel of that first album and helped informed their early style through full-out metal transition with Dickinson and NOTB. I don't know if you could do that with just any drummer.
