Incredible album. The guy ping-pongs from Run The Jewels-style ragers to dancehall jams, Future-esque chest-pounders and Harry Belafonte throwbacks on a sprawling, hyper-political record with nods to It Was Written, The College Dropout and Take Care. It's just stunner after stunner

dang that is really random!

best review I've seen of the LP (I guess I haven't really seen many though): http://www.vulture.com/2017/02/jidennas-new-album-the-chief-is-great.html

Kinda seems like everybody expects this to flop, coming so long after "Classic Man," but it feels like the rare, long-shelved debut album that used the extra gestation time to its advantage

I took a cursory listen this afternoon and I was very impressed.

was kind of annoyed that on the day this super-inventive, wide-ranging album dropped, as well as Remy Ma coming back with fire, I went on Twitter and it was Future's boring new one as far as the eye could see

yeah, I get it. Future's a star and it's more fun to have the conversation everybody else is having. But he's released the same album 7 times now, so it's a stretch trying to pass the new one off as an event.

Also Future's album opens with him fucking your girl once again, where this album opens with a wild Nigerian funeral for Jidenna's father and the promise of revolution. Future's fine but this record does all sorts of shit I've never heard before.

I haven't really dug those last couple of Desiigner singles some people on the board are excited about ("Timmy Turner" esp), but there's a similar structural ambition in a lot of these songs. I also get whiffs of The Carnival, not only b/c of the world music vibe but also because of the emotional and political range
