Singles results usually provide more interesting and idiosyncratic results, whereas albums results typically have more safe and critically acclaimed stuff. Probably because with singles people actually may have the time to listen and like some totally knew stuff, whereas with albums they're most likely to rep for stuff they already knew and loved before the poll, since it takes much more effort and time to try new albums. Or that's how it is with me at least.

Though of course singles polls almost always ignore genres where it makes little sense to evaluate individual tracks instead of albums, like ambient or art metal.

"some totally new stuff"

Tuomas, Friday, 27 January 2017 12:51 (seven years ago) link

I'd say I enjoy the singles results more for similar reasons to Tuomas, also it's easier for people to join in the discussion when something crops up they haven't already heard, I like getting peoples' first-listen reactions.

Weirdo stuff definitely gets traction in the albums poll but I agree that it's easier for people to follow along and discover stuff in the singles poll. I voted ffs, though.

No-one's ever cared about album charts, have they?

ffs for the win.

Oh right, this is about ILM polls? LOL. Where's the idgaf option?

FFS will win this but the albums list has been more interesting/surprising than the tracks list for the last few years. This year's tracks poll was good though.

Matt DC, Friday, 27 January 2017 13:25 (seven years ago) link

albums more interesting due to lack of repeat artists imo

i thought the albums poll was the ffs rollout

If a great single doesn't come from an even better album, it's not worth it for me.

my 2 cents: tracks is a lot of fun to follow since you can become familiar with most tracks a lot quicker than most albums

I always reckoned tracks was also most 'prestigious', and I think certainly the top tracks get quoted most (like, people know how many #1 votes realiti demo got etc.) but I was prompted to start this genius poll since a friend of mine surprised me by saying albums lists are always the main attraction for him

also, albums can be more valuable in the long run - there are lots of album threads, and discovering a great album is... v special

Obviously singles!

daavid, Friday, 27 January 2017 14:25 (seven years ago) link

I'm more of an albums listener, but for that reason the singles poll is more interesting.

'ffs' is such a boring rethread of nineties hipster-nihilism, so of course it will win.

Frederik B, Friday, 27 January 2017 14:30 (seven years ago) link

tracks poll obv better conceptually but also more liable to disappoint (not this year though) with multiple-placing artists, repeats from albums poll making it boring

albums poll - esp ILM's - often ends up being more interesting than you expect, albeit not always at the top

also, we live in times where albums dominate, where artists gear their work around the album where possible, across more genres than say in 2005; the scenes where this isn't the case (dance, dancehall, afrobeats) are still too niche to have a massive impact on this (or any other) poll

singles is always more fun for me and it's easier to react in the moment to the songs that i'm unfamiliar with, whereas things i don't know in the album rollout place and i'm like "ok i'll get around to that... one day" (this is definitely the problem with the metal poll, which i've barely scratched the surface of)

Albums poll rollout should be 10 albums per day over a full 8 days maybe?
