that mitski video is awful

marcos, Thursday, 26 January 2017 20:58 (seven years ago) link

I am massively annoyed about "If Rah" not making it and ZERO Kendrick tracks.

ornate orchestral arrangements (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2017 20:58 (seven years ago) link

I can't believe I was the only #1 vote for "Formation" tho. Btw the MikeQ remix is also v key, wish I could have voted for both.

I don't even like Black Beatles that much but that Mitski song is just so stodgy that I'm celebrating right now.

Matt DC, Thursday, 26 January 2017 20:58 (seven years ago) link

yesss! black beatles! I can't remember if I've ever voted the ilm number one as my own number one but it feels good to be part of the hivemind

Yeah only part pf this list I do not get is the amount of love for THE 1975. I listened they're ok I guess but hardly an obsession worthy band.

Great work gr80 <3

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 26 January 2017 20:58 (seven years ago) link

Also "Panda" >>> half this top ten

Yeah greatbwork on the poll.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Thursday, 26 January 2017 20:59 (seven years ago) link

I can't believe I was the only #1 vote for "Formation" tho.

I had it behind two ATCQ tracks and "Daddy Lessons"

ornate orchestral arrangements (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2017 20:59 (seven years ago) link

xps to myself - that said I've never even heard of mitski so...

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2017 20:59 (seven years ago) link

Very close for second place! Not even close for first.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 26 January 2017 20:59 (seven years ago) link

Yayyy Mitski, we love you <3

Thank you so much to everyone involved in this rollout - it was a lot of fun

tangenttangent, Thursday, 26 January 2017 20:59 (seven years ago) link

"Cranes in the Sky" was an instant classic on an album that bored me to tears.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 26 January 2017 20:59 (seven years ago) link

Pretty disappointed to discover after all this mystery that Mitski is the same kind of boring sniffly indie rock music we've heard on this list many times already, except with heavier guitars (eww).

Tuomas, Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:00 (seven years ago) link

Mitski song has great lyrics, but the chorus is basically "Teenage Dirtbag," isn't it?

Nah, Junie/FUBU/Mad/Don't Touch My Hair are all classics too.

Get Me Bodied (Extended Mix), Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:01 (seven years ago) link

black beatles is actually a very bad song

marcos, Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:02 (seven years ago) link

Teenage Dirtbag with a bit of hipster-patriotism on top?

I don't mind "Weary" and "...Hair."

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:02 (seven years ago) link

All these Weezer and "Teenage Dirtbag" mentions re: Mitski make me sad. Y'all, this song is so much better than any of that moldy old shit.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:02 (seven years ago) link

I can't believe the Mitski song is the one people take issue with tbh. I can't even begin to understand the love for Sremmurd

tangenttangent, Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:02 (seven years ago) link

tuomas there's been like 3 indie rock songs in this poll you wally.

not sure i "get" the mitski video but that song is pretty nice. doesn't strike me as a song of the year contender or whatever exactly but hey

"black beatles" obv pretty unimpeachable

thanks for a great rollout pollrunners!

niels, Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:05 (seven years ago) link

You can look up my comments on the Ear Murderers last time around if you care for my take.

The Mitski is better than "The Sweater Song" but I couldn't help but hear the similarities.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:05 (seven years ago) link

That Mitski tune is too Weezeresque for my taste.

Yeah, she sometimes sounds like Weezer and sometimes even reminds me weirdly of Tori Amos, which normally wouldn't excite me that much, but I just really like her voice and songwriting. Btw, she used to be part of a prog group called Voice Coils, who did a couple of great EPs.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:05 (seven years ago) link

"teenage dirtbag" is a great song, in case that obvious fact was being misinterpreted by people reading these casual comparisons

k3vin k., Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:06 (seven years ago) link

Teenage Dirtbag with a bit of hipster-patriotism on top?

Are you sure you were paying attention?

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:06 (seven years ago) link

ok so mitski would appear to be my second 'no idea who this is but wow' discovery of the day, melanie di biasio being the other

"black beatles" is a worthy winner :)

dyl, Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:06 (seven years ago) link

mitski video also great

dyl, Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:06 (seven years ago) link

also, yes both mitski and weezer use heavily distorted guitar sounds but to way different ends

niels, Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:06 (seven years ago) link

Thanks pollrunners for making this work. And gr8080 - those fakes were perfectly timed. kudos.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:07 (seven years ago) link

Clearly not.

I'll leave the long version for Mitski to tell, but the short version is "I thought I wanted to date you, American Boy, but we're not really on the same page and never will be because of deep culture clash and, whatever, I'm starting to appreciate that as I get older."

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:08 (seven years ago) link

"Black Beatles" has a really good beat, but like with "Bad and Boujee", the lyrics are too sexist that I'd want to listen to it multiple times, sorry. I know these guys are young and all and it's common, time-worn rap tropes they repeating, but there's so much good rap that averts those tropes that I can afford to avoid tunes like this.

Tuomas, Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:10 (seven years ago) link

mitski song is great
"townie" is an absolutely amazing song from her album before if anyones interested x

nxd, Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:11 (seven years ago) link

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Stars was my pick from that record, I voted for it

voodoo chili, Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:12 (seven years ago) link

All these Weezer and "Teenage Dirtbag" mentions re: Mitski make me sad. Y'all, this song is so much better than any of that moldy old shit.

I'm listening to it now and... not really? It's fine and all but eh.

re: "Black Beatles", this is the best Rae Sremmurd song I've heard to date; I would rate it a 5/10.

ornate orchestral arrangements (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:12 (seven years ago) link

honestly i don't get the Mitski hype either, can't shake the suspicion that it's '90s nostalgia?
