Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam "I Had a Dream That You Were Mine"

I didn't know about this album until a few days ago. I still have to listen to it more but so far I find it very good and endearing.
There's something ancient/oldies without being too retro/derivative.
It also shows clearly what Rostam's role was in Vampire Weekend since some tracks here could basically be on the latest VW album (which also makes me wonder how they will deal with his absence...).
Actually the whole album could almost be Modern Vampires of the City Vol. II (except the songwriting might be weaker. I need be more familiar with all the songs here).

Also, Hamilton's voice can be irritating sometimes, especially when he screams. that might be my main issue with this album.
But on the whole, it's a very satisfying winter/end of year album.

Oh and "A 1000 Times" has that instantly familiar quality to it. Almost a traditional song !

I seem to be in the minority in that Black Hours does more for me.

Also, Hamilton's voice can be irritating sometimes,

Just when I think I am really liking this effort, suddenly his voice on certain tracks bug me. But I like others, plus I like the way they borrow from different 20th century musical eras and from Vampire Weekend too

yeah, the tracks where he sings like in a primal scream session can be tedious. but sometimes, even those screams are a bit buried in the mix (well played Rostam !) so it's ok.
and many tracks are scream-free. which is nice.
so many VW signifiers over the record. that's one the things I like the most actually. and it's good while waiting for the next VW album (which might lack these VW signifiers consequently !)

hamilton is one of the best screamers in the biz, if you can't appreciate that then you don't deserve him

eheh. oh he clearly screams impressively. but there are moments when you don't necessarily want to listen to someone screaming !
at the moment I'm more in the mood for the quieter moments.
I suppose Rostam did the vocal harmonies ?

Hamilton's Dylan voice doesn't always wow me either.

While a number of reviews don't mention Rostam doing vocal harmonies, I found one website that said he did, among others also doing so. (my wife and I were listening to this a few days back and she was insisting she heard his voice). Also, I think Hamilton's voice might have been dubbed in , doing more than one part

One some vocal harmonies parts it sounds so much like VW that I suppose there must be Rostam's voice in there (maybe with Hamilton's overdubs).

I always loved HL's voice. It always seemed to serve the songs. Both his solo work and his work with The Walkmen always had that rambling, late night, kind of underlying drunk-person desperation vibe to it. I'm basically trying to say he often sounds wasted when he sings (especially when he scream-sings), which usually suited the music and lyrics.

I absolutely adore this record. Easily one of my favorites of 2016.

I don't think this will wind up as one of my all-timers, but I am really enjoying this now. Great end of summer late night drinking music.
As with The Walkmen, I like the overall sound and arrangements more than the songwriting.

Really enjoying his new collaboration with Angel Olsen. Sounds like it could have easily been part of I Had a Dream That You We're Mine.

Indeed. It really sounds like a Rostam production !
Nice song. Very Christmas-y.

love the tousled, slightly off-beat vocals on the verse. roadtrip anthem

When the trucks drive by
I feel 'em sway us side to side
You're underneath a blanket on the backseat
I'm going station to station on the dial

Like the contrast between the delivery of the verses and the chorus on that one

Thanks for the heads-up--this whole album has really grown on me since first checking it out due to this thread!

"4Runner" reminds me both production-wise and lyrically of Kurt Vile ca. "Freeway" and The War On Drugs more generally--a lot of this album nails the feel of a slightly more abstract Vampire/HAIM hybrid, which isn't necessarily surprising but am esp glad he used Henry Solomon on so many of the tracks, someone who I'd only previously heard on HAIM's "Summer Girl" (Solomon paired with those hyper breakbeats on "Kinney" is a big highlight for me).

Am way more into this album as a whole than any of the VW records--FWIW, so far this year, the only three 'indie' rock/pop/folk/R&B/w/e albums to wow me so far have been Buck Meek, Spirit Of The Beehive and now Changephobia (what a clunker of a title though, although I will concede that "Morphophobia" wouldn't have been sung as smoothly on the title track)
