I was originally inspired by the Pitchfork list back in August to make a list of my own 200 songs from the 1970s and I figured it would be easy just to bang out a list. In actuality, I ended up slaving over for it a long time and then slowly rolling it out on Facebook over four weeks (10 per day). I realize not everyone was paying attention, or could see those posts, so I'm putting it here as well. No poll or whatever. Just my list. Critique and discuss if you like. (Spotify playlist (incomplete))

(Originally, all 200 had youtube links, but it wouldn't let me post them that way. I overlooked the Glen Campbell one, in case anyone was wondering why that was the only youtube linked song.)

(Oh yeah, and I didn't allow myself to double up on artists, so that's why there's only one Bowie, one Wire, one Aretha, one etc.)

I atually feel a slight pain at the idea of compiling a list of my favorite songs from the 70s, I like so much from that decade.

_Rudipherous_, Sunday, 16 October 2016 03:02 (seven years ago) link

Excellent pick for number one. Such a perfect song.

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 16 October 2016 03:03 (seven years ago) link

Yes! I've been obsessed with "Kid" since I bought the Singles compilation album back in 1988 or 89. It almost feels like a cheat since it was released as a single in June 79, and thus only squeaks in as eligible, but it's legit one of my favorite songs ever by anyone. Honeyman-Scott's solo on that song is my white whale. If I ever master it, I can die happy.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 16 October 2016 03:17 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, it would be fighting for a place in my top 10 favourite songs ever. Chrissie has always been one of my favourite vocalists and this is one of the reasons why. I could listen to her sing, "shut the light, go away, full of grace, you cover your face" over and over. That is an incredible solo and then that sparkling guitar that appears at the end is just so beautiful. I've heard it hundreds of times and I'm always sad when it ends. Kid and Back on the Chain Gang are as good as music gets.

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 16 October 2016 03:54 (seven years ago) link

Great choices by Elton John, LaBelle, B-52's, Bruce Springsteen, Sheila & B. Devotion, Rufus, Deniece Williams, Bill Withers, Al Green, Sparks, Isley Brothers, Devo, Shuggie Otis and The Meters too. I've only just discovered Judee Sill recently and have been obsessed with The Kiss over the last month.

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 16 October 2016 04:02 (seven years ago) link

The Elton and Bruce songs were ones that I really came to appreciate through ILM artist polls, so thanks ILM!

I forgot I was already following this playlist. Better give it a listen, huh before telling you where you went all wrong ?

Jeff W, Sunday, 16 October 2016 11:35 (seven years ago) link

Oh I finished culling it to 200 about a month ago and there are already 25-30 songs I'd swap out for others. The 70s were an embarrassment of riches.

With this out of the way, you have a little more than 12 hours to rank your favorite soul albums from the 70's. Can you do it? :)

BTW, first reaction to your list: so much I don't know yet!
Second reaction: 'Prisencolinensinainciusol' TOO LOW

I want to, but I have a million things to do today. :(

Maybe I can get a top 25 together later.
