I find Chromeo annoying, but I love this.

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Friday, 7 October 2016 04:26 (seven years ago) link

i want him to go away again asap

dyl, Friday, 7 October 2016 07:34 (seven years ago) link

also lol are there no more obvious comparisons to be made here than chromeo or is that just an attempt to make this sound >= decent (not that chromeo were ever particularly beloved around here)

dyl, Friday, 7 October 2016 07:35 (seven years ago) link

chromeo were beloved? (iirc)

flopson, Friday, 7 October 2016 14:23 (seven years ago) link

i like several chromeo songs

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 7 October 2016 14:42 (seven years ago) link

more like dam-funk imo

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 7 October 2016 15:19 (seven years ago) link

chromeo is sick and i like this song because it sounds like vintage bad boy production

J0rdan S., Friday, 7 October 2016 15:31 (seven years ago) link

This is relatively retrained for a Bruno Mars song. I like that he isn't laying it on as thick as he usually does

Evan R, Friday, 7 October 2016 15:48 (seven years ago) link

it sounds even more like overly studied and awkwardly strained pastiche than usual, which is saying something because that's what pretty much all of his music from "locked out of heaven" onward is

the way it's such a small step away from "uptown funk" (which i actually liked! a lot!) is also a bit eyeroll-inducing too. speaking of eyes i'm convinced his obnoxiously omnipresent sunglasses must be concealing some bionic ones, + a brain with only one preprogrammed setting still in operation. semiannual maintenance required!

i suppose the lyrics (esp in 2nd verse) will come across as 'edgy' enough for grandparents to feel vaguely dangerous while enjoying, altho it's mostly just word salad of contemporary slang phrases. but i guess that is all pop music right

what i'm trying to say is i feel like i will only hate it more the more i am forced to hear it in the wild

thin, they're just sliding off my mind at the moment

I even love that "#blessed" line at this point.

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Monday, 10 October 2016 00:20 (seven years ago) link

The instrumental segment from 1:01 to 1:17 (repeated later) is either a sample or really close copy of something else. What is it? Help!

matt2, Monday, 10 October 2016 13:55 (seven years ago) link

I don't know, but I've been having that exact same thought as well.

MarkoP, Monday, 10 October 2016 15:53 (seven years ago) link

this whole song sounds so much like Candy Girl

Spottie, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 20:58 (seven years ago) link

Chromeo are great. this is pretty good. the only bit that sounds Bad Boy to me are the synths that sounds like the can't nobody hold me down synths, otherwise this sounds way more west coast

Spottie, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 21:01 (seven years ago) link

Chromeo make good songs and are cool guys and I'll fight you if you disagree.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 12 October 2016 21:09 (seven years ago) link

This Bruno Mars song sounds ok-ish. Not enough hooks or energy to be a big hit.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 12 October 2016 21:10 (seven years ago) link

More than a Chromeo song it sounds like a diminishing return of Uptown Funk and that song was on the charts for so long I feel like people wont be too impressed by its less talented cousin.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 12 October 2016 21:12 (seven years ago) link

Maybe if it was released during the uptown funk craze... then again looking at the current top 10 in the billboard charts maybe it desrves a chance.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 12 October 2016 21:15 (seven years ago) link

I probably listen to more Chromeo with my family than anything else.

such a good performer

Spottie, Sunday, 16 October 2016 07:39 (seven years ago) link

So even his backup singers on that are kind of stealing P-thugg's look. I don't know how to feel about this... it feels like too little too late for me. On one hand it's not terrible but on the other I think it's unfair that Chromeo (and dozens of other artists) has been doing this schtick for more than 10 years with way better songs and this gets a chance at stardom because Bruno Mars. Even Capital Cities have done more interesting things with this sort of nu-disco funk thing.

pumped to hear 24k Magic everywhere all the time forever, love the part where he channels Mystikal

flopson, Sunday, 16 October 2016 21:51 (seven years ago) link

This new song isn't bad, in that it is at least as good as that Timberlake song from the summer. He's clearly riding the "Uptown Funk" wave, in which case I suppose I'm mildly disappointed that he might not be interested in pursuing his earlier apparent goal of becoming his era's Billy Joel anymore.

He has skills & I used to like him more; but on SNL I thought he came across overly studied and awkwardly strained. Forced retro not saved by singing about hashtags

Best Beloved Trump-Pence (some dude), Saturday, 22 October 2016 15:32 (seven years ago) link

What is that pingy bell-like sound heard throughout the song (usually at the beginning of the verses)? It's a sound very prevalent in a lot of 90's r&b and g-funk type stuff, but I don't know if it was something also heard in the 70s and 80s funk that preceded it. Can someone clear this up for me?

i didn't even notice what about the beginning was bugging me, but you are right, the lyrics are really straightforward, the lack of a free tempo makes them feel less heartfelt somehow. great song though.

I'm a sucker for New Jack Swing pastiche, and this video is totally lovable.

I'm still shocked that Versace On The Floor was such a flop. I guess no-one was really there for a David Guetta remix.

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 11 January 2018 16:31 (six years ago) link

i like it enough that i probably won't change the station when it inevitably comes on but something about it leaves me cold. like a number of his other pastiches it's almost too on the nose.

it got me wondering, what was the last bruno mars single i liked that wasn't obvious pastiche? (i know that's, like, the majority of his output from "locked out of heaven" onward.) maybe "it will rain"? and it took me a while to warm up to that.

dyl, Friday, 12 January 2018 01:31 (six years ago) link

and i really liked "versace on the floor"! can't say i'm surprised it wasn't big but i would have welcomed it.

dyl, Friday, 12 January 2018 01:32 (six years ago) link

still not tired of uptown funk when it comes on. that song is like 20 pastiches.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 12 January 2018 03:59 (six years ago) link

“that’s what i like” is not an obvious pastiche

J0rdan S., Friday, 12 January 2018 08:05 (six years ago) link

Ahah « Finesse » could almost be one of the 90s New Jack parodies J Timberlake made like 10y ago...
Bruno Mars’ « Dick in a tiny box », girls.

oh right i forgot about "that's what i like" (even tho i still hear it all the time), that is a good one! + hits the spot as far as being referential but not eye-rollingly nostalgic
