Exit Planet Duck

don't even see how this was a duck (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 4 October 2016 16:35 (seven years ago) link

I had to check that wasn't one of the great rocklist typos, sadly not

The Ballistic Brothers - London Hooligan Soul
Wtf is this, I can't remember it at all...?

its not too bad.
kind of halfway between rockers hi-fi, and monkey mafia.

Ok, thanks. Most of those albums made it to these shores back in the day, but I don't remember seeing that one at all, must be a British thing?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 4 October 2016 16:50 (seven years ago) link

ha, i was going to mention ashley beedle as a reference point.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballistic_Brothers

did not know of their history as it was a bargain bin purchase that i never really got into until last year when i listened to it a couple of times.

I had to go for Leftism

So many great memories of the singles leading up to the album, it finally coming out and it was as amazing as I hoped then seeing them twice in 96 which was the 2 best gigs I've ever been to.
I never expected the gigs to be better than the underworld and orbital gigs I saw but they were.

Stirmonster knows what I'm talking about as I think he said he was there

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 4 October 2016 19:21 (seven years ago) link

Massive Attack vs Mad Professor is an underrated gem imho. But gonna have to go with Timeless.

the tightening is plateauing (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 4 October 2016 19:24 (seven years ago) link

Leftism still holds up, too... I don't listen to Leftfield often, but they certainly deserve to be alongside Orbital, Underworld, The Chemical Brothers, Prodigy etc.

T.Power - Self Evident Truths Of An Intuitive Mind

this is a horrible title but I remember liking this one so I'll dig it out this evening

otherwise I will vote for something boring like Timeless or Spanners (or Exit Planet Dust, which I also loved at the time and haven't listened to since). for some reason I don't think I've heard the As One album despite loving the previous one - I think this one is less Detroitish but not into the jazzy downtempo territory of his next one

it seems a bit odd that all these albums came out in the same year; in my head Leftism and the Nightmares On Wax were a good year or two older than the jungle/d&b albums

a passing spacecadet, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 10:53 (seven years ago) link

T Power were part of the intelligent drum 'n bass crowd weren't they? These are interesting lists insofar as there are a lot of canonised classics, alongside a lot of stuff that for whatever reason or reasons has been forgotten. For example a solo record from a member of DeeLite hardly screams "essential" but is probably good enough fun, likewise "solo project from Norman Cook".

Neil S, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 10:57 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, despite the awful title that T-Power album is maybe the finest example of those early album-length statements by jungle producers: certainly better than Timeless, and arguably as good as Black Secret Technology. IMO it's particularly good in mixing ambient house and drum & bass in a way few people have managed to do successfully ever since.

(T-Power's 1998 follow-up album, OTOH, was a horrible affair, lifeless and cold and uninspired.)

Despite seeing myself as an underground house and techno snob at the time (I was 18 or 19 so I'll cut myself some slack) I loved that BT album, in all its pompous grandiosity. Just gave it a blast on Spotify while cleaning the loft out and a lot of it is still quite fun.

This was the summer before I left for university and finally discovered ecstasy so there's that too.

ewar woowar (or something), Wednesday, 5 October 2016 12:02 (seven years ago) link

Some good UK techno here too. black dog, dave angel, the advent

ewar woowar (or something), Wednesday, 5 October 2016 12:03 (seven years ago) link

I had that dave angel CD but seem to have lost it unfortunately. It came with a sticker. It was really good and I would have liked to have played it again.

xp

yeah the BT album was a lot of fun and I put my cd on earlier this year and still enjoyed it.
I think I still like the albums on the 2 lists that I bought at the time.
Mixmag was also decent at the time until they started doing all the ibiza drug specials akin to mojo and the beatles. I have loads still up the loft of 90s mixmag and muziks I think.

groovypanda, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 13:09 (seven years ago) link

The T-Power album is CAD$1 or more on Bandcamp along with a lot of his other stuff if you need to refresh your memory. Minus the hidden CD tracks though. I dug it at the time... Always remembered Spanners as a 1994 release but apparently it came out in January '95. It was delayed lots wasn't it.

Isn't BST a holy text around here? Today it would be my pick.

Noel Emits, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 13:38 (seven years ago) link

In fact I played it earlier as I just got the '08 remaster.

Noel Emits, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 13:40 (seven years ago) link

My copy from '95 was a particularly bad pressing, very very quiet. It had good reviews but I think it felt a bit under the radar at the time. I don't remember big press attention maybe the odd half page ad. I wasn't listening to deejays playing DnB at this time so can't really comment on it's club or radio exposure but my guess it wasn't huge.

Vanessa Daou
Eric Kupper

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 15:09 (seven years ago) link

The Advent were acid techno guys, a bit Hardfloor-esque IIRC, got some play on Peel

Neil S, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 15:25 (seven years ago) link

Vanessa Dauo and Erik Kupper are both deep house / song based. Pretty inoffensive. I remember liking the Vanessa Dauo. Seems like some big name house producer did the music.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 15:31 (seven years ago) link

Love that Vanessa Daou. Peter Daou produced it and he worked with Danny Tenaglia I seem to remember. Deep house vibes with sleezy erotic lyrics..

mmmm, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 16:02 (seven years ago) link

I only recently picked up Advent's Elements, a bit long as a double CD/triple album but decent.

mmmm, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 16:05 (seven years ago) link

While everyone's busy in the other thread posting the entirety of rateyourmusic.com's all-time Top 5000 five LP's at a time, I've been relaxing with Timeless and it still sounds fantastic. 'State of Mind' is really hitting the spot right now, and the epic title track is still a trip. So yeah, Timeless is getting my vote.

boringly but unquestionably Maxinquaye

nashwan, Thursday, 6 October 2016 10:29 (seven years ago) link

It's a great tune, but I was a bit disappointed when I found out what a straightforward reworking of Herb Alpert's "Beyond" it is... It doesn't even tweak the original in clever ways like "The Bomb" does to "Street Player", it's pretty much just a house cover version. And the sleeve still claims it was written by Glenn Underground. (Possibly because he didn't get the clearance for the original tune?)

(xpost)

Tuomas, Thursday, 6 October 2016 10:33 (seven years ago) link

I only heard Street Player for the first time yesterday, I had no idea it was that song so it raised a smile.

Voted for Cuban Linx, Maxinquaye would be a close second. Strange that Liquid Swords didn't make either list (released too late in the year maybe?).

re advent : i had no idea re the connection to Mr G !
i only recently picked up one of his cds that came out on REKIDS.
as for advent : not sure i have ever been able to make it all the way through both cds in one sitting, as it is rather brutal.
i seem to recall picking it up as it was on the same (sub)label as orbital ?
internal ?
same reason i picked up the salt tank mini-lp/cd, st3.

mixmag seems to be still going strong.
no longer do they put cds on the cover, but credit card things with a d/l code for a special mixtape.

each code from the card allows 5 downloads.
wish i had found the recent ed banger/justice card instead
ie. the jackmaster mix was somewhat crap.

Lol at none of the top 3 being actual electronic/dance music, I guess ILX's Americanisation is now complete.

Why it's almost as if people prefer dance music out of the album context (which is also partly why the magazine lists included such a degree of less dancefloor-orientated stuff).

we can certainly see the results of "Americanisation" when 2 of the top 3 are, err, European artists.

What I meant was, in 1995 Americans weren't really listening to electronic club music, so those albums would not be familiar to most of them, so they'll vote for the pop and trip-hop stuff that did cross over. And American music, of course.
