Carter’s 4/4 figure is known as ‘’tresillo’’ in Afro-Cuban music and is the duple-pulse correlative of the 12/8 figure. This may have been the first overt expression of systemic, African-based cross-rhythm used by a straight ahead jazz group

Freedom Jazz Dance. Love the head and the drums

argh damnit. The eddie harris version.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Friday, 12 August 2016 15:35 (seven years ago) link

man not me, the Miles version is so much darker, edgier. That band makes it sound like it was one of their originals, and Tony Williams' drum pattern is godlike, hyper nimble shuffle-funk

"Circle" for that twinkly impressionistic piano part. Footprints is good too. I can never remember the rest no matter how much I listen to it (a problem I have with all Miles' pre-fusion avant stuff--either it's amelodic or my ears aren't configured for it)

The newest volume in the Bootleg Series is a 3CD set that includes the complete "session reels" for every track on this album, plus a couple tracks from Nefertiti. The "session reels" are basically the tape of Miles and band learning/rehearsing each piece - the one for "Freedom Jazz Dance" is about 20 minutes long, while some of the others are only four or five minutes. For nerds, it's great getting to eavesdrop on the band talking each other through the tunes, throwing ideas back and forth, playing a little bit, stopping, starting over, etc. For normal humans, it's probably excruciating.

As long as the sound quality is ok I´d be very happy with it. Part 2 of the "Bootleg" series was so bad I only kept it because of the dvd. I never listen to the discs (nor do I play part 1 of the series).

I don't play Vol. 2 very often, but that's because I don't like that 1969 quintet that much. I prefer the double-keyboard band from 1970, and I like the 1971 European touring band (with Gary Bartz on sax, Keith Jarrett on keyboard, Michael Henderson on bass, and Leon Ndugu Chancler on drums) even more than that.

Ooh the release date of that bootleg thing is my birthday! Might have to buy myself a gift...

I'm feeling Delores right now

So I guess you play part 4 of the series a lot more then.

It seems part 5 only covers a part of the studio sessions of the "second great quintet". I guess there´s more in store then for future releases in the series (I´m curious if they will ever release the second version of "Circle in the Round").
