1970s Albums in the summer of 2013

we are back and i hope we have fun with this.

didn't start off too well as the link didn't work.

Bee OK, Thursday, 9 June 2016 01:08 (seven years ago) link

The best album of 2000 is the self-titled album by The Glands. Rest in peace, Ross Shapiro.

From this list, Marshall Mathers.

Voodoo but like yo... where the fuck is Mama's Gun?

Hey (Extended Mix), Thursday, 9 June 2016 02:39 (seven years ago) link

32 1901 Erykah Badu - Mama's Gun

i allude to it and i might continue this series next summer but that is a long ways away.

Bee OK, Thursday, 9 June 2016 04:17 (seven years ago) link

One of these:

Radiohead - Kid A
OutKast - Stankonia
The Avalanches - Since I Left You
Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica
D'Angelo - Voodoo
Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele
Grandaddy - The Sophtware Slump
The New Pornographers - Mass Romantic
Common - Like Water for Chocolate

Leaning towards Common to be honest

New poll, new decade

Bee OK, Thursday, 9 June 2016 14:36 (seven years ago) link

does ILM want this to continue? it was a good four year run but if the board is no longer interested i don't see a reason to do the 2000's.

Bee OK, Friday, 10 June 2016 03:20 (seven years ago) link

I vote to continue. I like these polls, particularly the singles ones, which always send me off nostalgically Spotifying.

rhymes with "blondie blast" (cryptosicko), Friday, 10 June 2016 04:08 (seven years ago) link

Yeah good stuff! Lotsa cool albums here, kinda wanna vote supreme clientele but kid a is just massive

Think avalanches and voodoo will do well

niels, Friday, 10 June 2016 06:02 (seven years ago) link

The Moon & Antarctica. Kid A will walk with this. Relationship of Command hasn't aged well. Figure 8 isn't the best ES album.

flappy bird, Friday, 10 June 2016 06:12 (seven years ago) link

2000 was a really, really good year. I went to a lot of gigs, had great fun, went a bit psychotic, and there were loads of fabulous albums.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 10 June 2016 06:53 (seven years ago) link

I don't remember 2000 being a standout year myself. I was almost obtusely against the zeitgeist/mainstream by that point so a lot of these albums only arrived to my attention quite some time later.

TARANTINO! (dog latin), Friday, 10 June 2016 08:37 (seven years ago) link

There are so many good albums from 2000, but I did NOT think I'd see Håkan Hellström on here, and I have to vote for that. That's the sound of growing up in Scandinavia those years.

För många ramlande flickor ramlar förbi
För många rammelsängar att ramla I

...

Och jag ramlade in på nåt diskotek
Och sen ramla jag ut, såvitt jag vet
Och jag ramla omkull och tog mig upp och sen
Ramla jag omkull igen

So many amazing lines on that album.

Frederik B, Friday, 10 June 2016 08:46 (seven years ago) link

Kid A is kind of the no-brainer here for me, I used to love listening to it high.

After that, its Ghostface and Godspeed

the mood and the melanies (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 10 June 2016 08:58 (seven years ago) link

I have loved all of the following at one time or another:

Radiohead
Outkast
Eminem
PJ Harvey
Primal Scream
D'Angelo
At The Drive-In
Yo La Tengo
Ghostface
Queens of the Stone Age
Badly Drawn Boy
Goldfrapp
Lambchop
Luomo
Common

Which is a pretty good return for a single year.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 10 June 2016 09:09 (seven years ago) link

Kid A, Stankonia, or Relationship of Command.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Friday, 10 June 2016 09:18 (seven years ago) link

Or Goldfrapp, lovely album.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Friday, 10 June 2016 09:19 (seven years ago) link

Voting for Common, I love a lot of albums on this list, but I'm worried Common won't get any votes.

a poon shaped mule (voodoo chili), Friday, 10 June 2016 13:02 (seven years ago) link

I am voting for Marshall Mathers, but I do still have a soft spot for Mass Romantic

niels, Saturday, 11 June 2016 11:13 (seven years ago) link

hey but anyway I think we all agree that canons are tools of oppression, and these lists and rankings may seem weird and tokenistic, rockistic, all sorts of bad stuff - but those are all great albums! and we all know them since they're in the evil canon, so we can all vote and discuss, just for the fun of it

like that thread abt most scary/impressive/fascistic monuments - we can have fun voting and talking abt stuff we don't agree with?

anyway, these threads could also be used for discussing the canon if anyone finds that interesting (what's missing, which conservative aesthetic values are expressed, i dunno)

niels, Saturday, 11 June 2016 11:17 (seven years ago) link

I was 29 in 2000, was going to say "I have heard none of these" but wait, Mass Romantic, one of my favorite records of all time! Remember hearing "My Slow Descent..." on the radio and almost having to stop the car, I was so bowled over, and it had been so long since a piece of pop pushed everything else aside so forcefully.

Don't really know what I was listening to in 2000? Kleenex Girl Wonder and Barcelona had great records that year. Oh and "Mermaid Avenue Vol. 2"

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 11 June 2016 12:10 (seven years ago) link

yeap, thanks niels. could not have said it better.

Bee OK, Saturday, 11 June 2016 19:22 (seven years ago) link

ghostface vs. luomo both of which i got into later, it's a little embarrassing what i liked at the time. i think i finally have no use for radiohead which is a relief tbh.

riverine (map), Saturday, 11 June 2016 19:40 (seven years ago) link

I look on this list, and honestly it looks pretty good. It's really not that I miss too much, but then I see U2, Coldplay, Doves, Deftones, Dandy Warhols, and yeah, there must be some worthy records missing.

You NEED to hear the last one!

Frederik B, Saturday, 11 June 2016 20:35 (seven years ago) link

I saw this Badly Drawn Boy tour and wonder how this album holds up.

the future is now, Sunday, 12 June 2016 00:09 (seven years ago) link

I guess "Mass Romantic", though it's more uneven than their later albums. Probably my favorite albums from 2000 are Immolation "Close to a World Below" and Peter Garland "The Days Run Away".

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Nothing on this list was/is/will be as enduring, influential and flat out brilliant as Kid A.

Austin, Monday, 13 June 2016 00:54 (seven years ago) link

This poll was my latest incentive to give Voodoo yet another shot. I still don't get it.

Voted for Stankonia over Kid A and Mass Romantic.

Voodoo of the options available. Discordance Axis's The Inalienable Dreamless is probably my favourite of the year.

imago, Monday, 13 June 2016 04:05 (seven years ago) link

i'm going w Luomo. such a lovely little world. the rest of these can suck it. actually i haven't heard that many of them and don't care that much. would actively avoid gybe. luomo is the only one of these i would gladly listen to right now though. kid a is bad.

riverine (map), Monday, 13 June 2016 04:23 (seven years ago) link

i'm a hip hop rube but isn't supreme clientele one of the best ghostace records? why did people like eminem again? sorry

riverine (map), Monday, 13 June 2016 04:27 (seven years ago) link

hmm maybe luomo is actaully bad. watch for more from me in this space soon.

riverine (map), Monday, 13 June 2016 04:37 (seven years ago) link

People like Eminem because hooks, pop music, persona. Maybe race. I like Ghostface but he's not got hooks like Eminem.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 13 June 2016 05:27 (seven years ago) link

I've heard like three of these. Voted for GYBE anyway.

cookware regression (Dinsdale), Monday, 13 June 2016 07:01 (seven years ago) link

for me, Moon & Antarctica vs. Lift Yr Skinny Fists vs. Mass Romantic is an impossible choice

alpine static, Monday, 13 June 2016 07:50 (seven years ago) link

in the end, i voted for the one i think is most clearly the band's peak

alpine static, Monday, 13 June 2016 07:53 (seven years ago) link

Voted for Stories From the City. Supreme Clientele and Kid A are my other favourites but I still like over half of these albums. Most glaring omission for me: Gas - Pop

Not my favourite year of the 00's, it has to be said. Of course, there was some good-to-great music as there was every year, but for some reason 2000 still felt like it had a bit of a '90s hangover about it. To me, it didn't feel like the 00's properly got started until about 2003 or thereabouts. 2003-2007 I remember as being particularly good years. 2002 and 2008 probably much less so.

i had a vague thought about vocalcity i wanted put down. it's sort of this beautifully conceived ad for the EU isn't it? and is in that sense a funny little time capsule. it's sooo gorgeous though...

riverine (map), Monday, 13 June 2016 22:48 (seven years ago) link

Voted for The Avalanches. Ghostface Killah and D'angelo would complete my top three.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 13 June 2016 22:51 (seven years ago) link

hmm maybe luomo is actaully bad

awful take

I voted for white pony anyway
