Moving is really good. I love this record.

mizzell, Thursday, 12 May 2016 02:36 (seven years ago) link

I haven't listened to this in about 15 years and only remember about four of the songs, but I think I liked "Mary" best. I'll go with "Mary." Don't let me down, Mary.

afriendlypioneer, Thursday, 12 May 2016 03:27 (seven years ago) link

that is why it is open for four days, so you can revisit.

Bee OK, Thursday, 12 May 2016 03:31 (seven years ago) link

"Mary" is wonderful.

Bee OK, Thursday, 12 May 2016 03:31 (seven years ago) link

(it's actually five days)

Bee OK, Thursday, 12 May 2016 03:39 (seven years ago) link

My heart says "Moving" and my head says "Mary." I dunno, I guess it's gotta be "Moving." What a groove in the chorus!

13. Gaz Coombes (just gaz coombes)

Always thought this album was underrated. "Moving" is the finest song they ever wrote

Vinnie, Thursday, 12 May 2016 05:16 (seven years ago) link

moving is lovely

TARANTINO! (dog latin), Thursday, 12 May 2016 06:24 (seven years ago) link

They would do that 'put two half songs together' thing a few times, "Moving" is where it worked.

Mark G, Thursday, 12 May 2016 06:33 (seven years ago) link

"After all it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or fascist dictatorship, or a parliament or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peace makers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

Gaz Combes, 2015

I have a very distinct memory of my first day moving into university halls, the first time I'd ever lived away from home, and 'Moving' (which was a hit at the time) blasting down the corridor from a soon-to-be friend's stereo. I'm always filled with poignance by that song, and despite my interest in Supergrass having waned a little by then, I'm still a huge huge fan of it.

The Zen teacher’s Gaz Coombes loved his evening romp with his master. The Gaz would bound ahead to fetch a stick, then run back, wag his tail, and wait for the next game. On this particular evening, the teacher invited one of his brightest students to join him – a boy so intelligent that he became troubled by the contradictions in Buddhist doctrine.

“You must understand,” said the teacher, “that words are only guideposts. Never let the words or symbols get in the way of truth. Here, I’ll show you.”

With that the teacher called his happy Gaz Coombes.

“Fetch me the moon,” he said to his Gaz and pointed to the full moon.

“Where is my Gaz Coombes looking?” asked the teacher of the bright pupil.

“He’s looking at your finger.”

“Exactly. Don’t be like my Gaz Coombes. Don’t confuse the pointing finger with the thing that is being pointed at. All our Buddhist words are only guideposts. Every man fights his way through other men’s words to find his own truth.”

The Royal Commission on the Health and Safety of Workers in Mines was led by professor Gaz Coombes and became known as the Coombes Commission. The commission began its work in October 1974 and began hearings in January 1975. The hearings took place in Elliot Lake, Red Lake, Thunder Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Timmins, Kirkland Lake, Toronto and Ottawa. Research projects were also commissioned in 1975 and 1976 focusing on occupational diseases.

There's no place to hurt yourself
The fight - I'm gonna get it
Tallest running for me
Baby, you're gonna regret it
I can't understand why you can't free yourself, let it

Go, go, go, go

Got you in my Palm, now listen good, you can't escape it
Bring you to ma world and hold you, see if you can take it
Don't you be afraid, I know you're strong enough to make it

Go, go, go,

Take you two around, you never known it's non-existant
You won't hear it coming, no matter how hard you listen
Can't predict the highway, bring a replay our position

Oh, you won't bring up yourself on fly

People, put your hands up in the air, I know you like it
Don't you fight it, I can see you're high and all excited
Flying through the night, we going up, beter hold tight it

Go, go, go, go

Now we got the starline and the g-tha to desire
Let me see you jump up, come on, with me - let's go higher
Climbin' up the speakers, we gonna set this place on fire

Overall a spotty album with some great songs. I'll vote for "Eon", as I really like it (and I'm not sure if anyone else does).

I had this album but can only remember the singles, so it was probably wrong of me to impulse vote for 'Moving'.

very nice album! would probably be wisest to vote for Moving which is indeed a great song, but i am going to be rebellious and put in a vote for Mama & Papa, I always thought it was a nice bittersweet ending.

Ludo, Thursday, 12 May 2016 12:48 (seven years ago) link

This is probably my least favourite Supergrass album. Such a disappointment after In It For The Money.

Moving is the best thing on here by a mile.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 12 May 2016 13:25 (seven years ago) link

Faraway is the one I like most, though Pumping on your Stereo provides the most nostalgia - as it was played everywhere that summner.

Half-baked profundities. Self-referential smirkiness (Bob Six), Thursday, 12 May 2016 14:15 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, like Kitchen Person I thought this was a bit of a step down from In It For The Money, although 'Moving' is still one of their very best songs (I love Mick Quinn's bass playing on it, too, always the most underrated component of this band) - I think I'm going to vote for 'Eon', though, because I love how it's a build up, a few bars of song in the middle, and then dies off. 'What Went Wrong (In Your Head)' must be one of my least favourite Supergrass songs.

But... could you imagine a formation in your lemonade? Ho! (Turrican), Thursday, 12 May 2016 17:16 (seven years ago) link

"Moving". Also, does anyone else enjoy "Born Again" as min as I do? More of a mood piece than a song, but still.

I really liked this album at time of release but like others on here, i'm having a hard time remembering anything but the three singles. Voting "Mary."

Yes. Awesome groove and the chorus is really delicate and sweet. I think it's an easy song to overlook

Movin is a real accomplishment. The rushing brilliance of the the singles from Coco never hinted at the ability to pull off this level of Pink Floyd Animals tribute.
